Bought this for a cycle tour around Brittany. No one could tell me the extent of the mapping included but don`t worry - it appears to have the world! It performed very well, often in torrential rain, routing us on the most cycle-friendly routes. It was easy to plan routes (`Courses` in Garmin terminology) on the app and transfer them to the device. Equally east to just punch your destination into the device. The handlebar mounting is completely secure and 2 are supplied.. Excellent pages of different information as supplied and it is also easy to add extra custom pages (love this feature). Battery life is excellent. We rode all day and never came close to running out of charge. There are a few less than excellent features. Twice in the week the device locked. Of course we did not have the instructions with us but a quick Google gave the answer. Press and hold the on/off button util the device restarts (you have to hold it for quite a long time). It is no big deal and data does not appear to be lost but it would be better if it did not happen at all! One thing that really foxed me was a big flashing blue triangle that appeared centre screen as soon as you got speed up. Nothing seemed to get rid of it....Google again...it means press the arrow button to begin recording the ride. Finally, screen brightness. In battery save mode it will not go above 50%. At this it is virtually impossible to see the screen in bright sunlight. I also have a Lezyne Mini-GPS mounted on the bars. Its hi-res black and white display put the Garmin to shame. But even with these moans, I have to rate this as an excellent device. For a tour it is just so useful. Even when off-course, if you keep going it will route you back on course and because you can punch destinations straight into the device it is easy to detour. Even for performance cyclists, it can provide a lot of information. A really good buy.

I wanted a simple GPS device without all the metrics and other performance 'bells and whistles'. This one fits the bill perfectly as it's been very simple to use for navigation and uploading basic ride information such as distance, time and speed. The device isn't as big as it looks in the photos and mounting on the handlebars with the supplied mount works well for me. I was worried that the touch screen wouldn't work well with gloves on but no problem so far (apart from when I locked the screen inadvertently as there is no indication it's locked).Downloading routes is straightforward either from the PC using the USB cable or using the mobile app and Bluetooth. I've not been able to try the advanced phone app features such as echoing texts and calls on the device but that's just a nice to have as far as I'm concerned. So if you want a GPS without the advanced metrics about performance this should fit the bill

These models have not been out that long. As such second hand examples are likely to have had less use. They still go at half the price of new though. Battery life is good regardless, esp. with battery saving mode on. The hardware is very good, much better than previous Garmin touch screens - it works in the rain or with gloves on.. The screen is bright and large, which helps navigation a lot. Forget the old touring model which goes for a little less than this - this is superior. You get auto upload to your phone and strava (once account is linked). You get incident alarms sent out to loved ones. The incident detection has always worked for me (picked up the two times I fell and never gave a false alarm). Where it had downsides is in the software. It seems to be too much like old Garmin models. And the connect phone app could be a lot better. The routes it finds have been buggy. I ride in a popular area yet the reccomendations are terrible. No matter what settings I have I find google gives better nagivation. Also a website created by one man gives better navigation cycle dot travel - check it out. The user interface could be better. Would be great if they let third parties develop more software for it. A whole new OS !! And the phone app could do so much more than itdoes. This is where Wahoo have the edge. But their hardware is lacking - so I prefer the Garmin. It's easy enough to download a route from another app on my phone to this Garmin. That is what I do. Battery life is easily enough to nav. with this Garmin for 10 hours battery saving move, which switches the screen off until come to turn. And this works very well. Compared to a phone you get a robust unit built to be used outdoors, with a reflective screen. When on bike tours it uses considerably less energy than a phone, even if switched on all the time. My dynamo has no problem keeping the Garmin charged with ample over to also charge my phone for use when in camp. When I just used a phone for nav. it was a lot more difficult in all kinds of ways!

Got this to replace the Explore 530 as that didn't have a touch screen.Used it 3 times and every time it hasn't let me down. Still getting to used it so can't rate all the features. One exceptionally useful feature is telling it where you want it to go. Tap cities from the search and then press the check box to type in where you want to go. It saves your choice so if you want to go back it works out a route from where you are. Even if you are on a ride and you decide to go somewhere else it still records your time so far, handy for a country ride from village to village. An awesome piece of kit

Garmin came up with an amazing cycling GPS, the Edge 1030. Then against all odds, someone must have said, "What if we offered the same thing, only without the stuff for power meters, digital shifting, and live Strava? And charged half the price for it?" Which makes the Edge Explore the almost perfect GPS for me.I've been a geocacher for years, and for the last 3 years have successfully used my GPSMAP 62 on the bike. But with the Edge Explore, I got these terrific bonuses:- Easy to start a ride, and it sends results straight to my online Connect account and RideWithGPS account as soon as I finish. No more cable to hook up!- Can load pre-planned routes from RideWithGPS to the Explore easily. Again, no cables needed.- Turn-by-turn route directions are ... MoreGarmin came up with an amazing cycling GPS, the Edge 1030. Again, no cables needed.- Turn-by-turn route directions are terrific!- Cool display options with free add-on apps (MY EDGE2 from the IQ store)- Temperature display!- Weather screen shows the forecast- Battery level indication -- no more guessing.- Touch screen that works very well. The one BAD thing about this unit is that it does not have a built-in altimeter, but uses the GPS signals to estimate the elevation. This is very inaccurate. So there are cool features on the Edge Explore like "Elevation Gain" and "Elevation Lost" that would be so fun, but they're constantly off by about a third. When I finish riding and the stats are sent to Garmin Connect, it automatically updates the elevations with map data, so it's fixed there. But while riding, it's totally bogus. If you can live without live elevation data, then this GPS is a sweet deal for anyone but the most hard-core rider. Or if Garmin updates the firmware to allow the use of map elevation instead of gps-calculated elevation, then this becomes a 5-star device.
I got this about a week ago and love it. The navigation screen is the best out there. I watched all the YouTube videos and read so many reviews on google on it and more expensive ones. For me it’s pretty much perfect. I really like doing the round trip function and setting how far I want to ride (it only works for 5 miles or more btw). But I really like it. It gives me three chooses and I can view the map of each route and if I don’t like any of them, I just redo it and it will give me 3 mew onesI’m not a racer. I pick they route I want and just enjoy the ride. The navigation always tells me in words at the top of the screen how far till the next turn and the street name I have to turn on and the direction. When I get close it beeps several times to get my attention so I don’t miss my turnFor the people that complain that the warning for sharp turns are annoying and cannot he turned off, there is a setting on the app to turn that off.Someone else also complained that they stopped riding at a light or to get water and when they started riding again they had to press a button to have the computer continue. Well again just go in settings to the “auto” section. There’s a bunch of choices and one is to turn on auto start and stop.I love it and I’m finding out more and more features every day
I love this thing. Easy to use, and good mapping. I'm coming from the standard edge 520 to this and feel it's a big upgrade. I was a little worried about the negative reviews you find online for it, but figured it's from REI...I can return it if I hate it. I definately don't hate it. There are setting to turn off all the annoying stuff like the sharp bend warning, so don't let other reviews scare you off. I've yet to find anything it does that annoys me during a ride that I couldn't easily turn off before the next. By far my favorite feature is the out and back route creator. You enter the distance you want to go, and it gives you 3 options to pick from. Just for fun 3 days in a row i selected routes for a 40 miles round trip. You enter the distance you want to go, and it gives you 3 options to pick from. Just for fun 3 days in a row i selected routes for a 40 miles round trip. Glanced to get a general idea where it was going to send me, and then off I went just following the guidance of the device. Obvously, this would be more handy in an area you aren't familair with more so than from your home. I wanted to see if it actually kept me off busy freeways and on all paved roads (setting you can specifiy withing the device). I also wanted to see if I went off course if it could re-route to get me back on course, or to come up with another way to an end point. On one ride I purposely didn't take a turn a few miles from home, and went a different way with no chance of getting back to the orignal road it had me going to. Intead of insisting I get back to that point it just re-routed me home the easiest way in the direct I was going. Super handy especially if you are in an area you aren't familiar. I really only have one minor complaint about this thing. Compared to me 520 it loses GPS signal a lot easier on hills/heavy tree coverage. You'll definately want to use a speed sensor with it. I don't feel like I lost any actualy distance/data from the lost connection, but once I synced my speed sensor problem solved. I used it for a mountain bike ride that was pretty deep in the woods as well. With speed sensor I had no issues. Another person with me that had a different brand computer lost out on almost a miles worth of cycling due to his losing GPS durnig the ride. All in all I love this thing, and am happy with the purchase. I had considered a couple other computers before buying (wahoo & Karoo), but in the end am extremeley happy I went with the explore.
I have owned a Garmin 705 GPS for several years and love it. This model The Explore I purchased for another bike that I own in Florida. The difference is day and night. The 705 uses Garmin software to plot a course and the interface is simple, easy to use and understand. It also has a screen that is easy to see and the turn by turn guidance is excellent. The Explore model is a giant step backward in my opinion. The interface is clunky and very unintuitive. Garmin wants you to be part of the Garmin community and that is what this model is designed upon. If you are mainly interested in independently creating a course of your own or from a route sheet and plotting it using Garmin’s City Navigator then the Explorer is not for you. Other newer models of Garmin GPS my be more user friendly but I have no experience with using them so I cannot comment on that aspect of their use but if the Garmin Community concept of design is common to newer models I much prefer “ old school “ design that is sadly discontinued.
Got this as a refurbished and finally made sense to me price wise. I don't even use the maps because I live in a rural area. The features are fun to use because they function so easily. Quick connections, accurate readings, great screen customization. I really only need the speed, miles, time etc and it's worth it. The maps are it's whole selling point with frequent updates and easy display. If you have never tried a garmin and are wondering I would give it a try. Fun device on your bicycle
