Bottom line, I am sure there are fixes. But yofu will not find them in the User's Manual. At first, the manual was blessedly written in perfect English. It is also mercifully brief. Then, I came to realize the manual is TOO brief. No troubleshooting section. In fact, it can toss one's self-esteem under the bus as you try intuitively to figure out why stuff is not working. Then, the customer/tech support at Fuji's web site is nothing short of a meaningless death-march with nowhere to go for help. Trust me, none of your concerns will be one of those listed on their site. Since the images are great, I will continue to seek out tech support to get it back to when I lifted it from the box.

I've owned the predecessor to this camera- the X20- for a couple of years and really enjoyed it, but decided to upgrade to the X30 after reading about the improvements incorporated into the newer model. The biggest advancement is the replacement of the optical viewfinder with an electronic one. The EVF on the X30 is very bright, clear, and sharp offering a 100% field of view vs. the rather poor 85% field of the X30 OVF. The EVF eliminates parallax problems as well so what you see is what you get. Another nice improvement is the fold out monitor that helps when shooting from difficult angles such as at ground level. I was a pro portrait and wedding shooter for a couple of decades and wearied of the Fuji and Nikon SLR's with flash units, and big aperture lenses. My regular camera/lens/flash weighed a little more than a fully loaded AR battle rifle. When I slowed down, I bought a mirrorless Fuji X10, and it has been used for 100% of my personal shooting since 2012. I used to use medium format film cameras but was delighted to make the switch to 35mm SLR's and it involves the same basic decision; smaller, lighter, faster, more agile equipment helps me capture what I visualize better than big, heavy, elaborate stuff. I always wished the external flash system worked faster, that it had a full info viewfinder because you can't use an LCD in bright sunlight or weird lighting, and a tilting LCD to get my camera where I want it and I can compose without the need to guess what I am shooting or get in positions that I don't like. I went briefly to the Fuji X100T The images it produced were superb, but I really didn't care for a fixed normal lens and the camera operations seemed needlessly complicated. B&H graciously accepted my return, and I purchased the X30. This is a perfect camera for me. It is fast focusing, fast shooting, and the viewfinder allows me to use the camera much more like an SLR when I am in dynamic situations. I wouldn't expect to shoot a sporting event but I'm sure I could grab a few great shots at fast moving events. It has all the good qualities of the X10 plus the tilting LCD to view and compose low and high subjects or to overcome extreme sunlight. It allows for easy use of external flash and the built in peewee flash is surprisingly effective and controllable. The JPEG images it produces are consistently good. I am sure in low to medium ISO's they will print 16x20's if the pictures are good and don't require a bunch of post processing. The only things I did not care for in this camera package was the strap which I replaced with an Op/TechUSA neoprene strap, and the lack of a battery charger in the package. I ordered the compact battery charger (WACFUNP95) from B&H and will receive it soon. Even though the X30 uses a better (larger) battery than the X10, it still needs at least one back up battery if you are seriously shooting something. I also find the lens cap that Fuji uses on the X cameras to be slow to remove and install and probably expensive when you lose it. I ordered a 40.5mm-46mm step up ring for the lens and will put a skylight filter and a 46mm lens cap in place of the original equipment. It is small and handsome and feels like a good German metal viewfinder camera in your hand. Its fine quality, large aperture, 4x zoom lens is worth more than the camera price. It is an incredible value and purchasing from B&H is a no-risk deal.

I have owned the 2 proceeding cameras in this series, the X10 & X20 and I, like many, was disappointed that Fuji did not put a bigger sensor in this third version- until I realized what they DID include- while not increasing the price! First, the EVF is glorious, 100% field of view, all exposure parameters available to see in the viewfinder with new, cleaner graphics that rotate when using the camera in potrait mode, all changes to exposure and depth of field available immediately to see, no intrusion of the lens hood in the field of view and polarizer filters are now easy to use and to view the amount of polarizing! And when shooting in sunlight you need a viewfinder to easily see and frame what you are photographing And using the viewfinder also increases ... But the rear LCD has been improved also, it now tilts(great for low level macro work and this camera is great for macro photography) and has double the resolution which is great for viewing and manual focusing. The WiFi implementation is excellent, and once you experience the benifits of WiFi you won't want a camera without it. The new control ring gives you additional control flexibilty but it takes a little getting used to. The new grippy covering on the camera makes the camera much easier to securely hold and I presonally like the (slightly) larger size, fits my hands better. I think the Build quality of the X30 is better than the X10 & X20 also, especially in terms of the buttons on the back, though both of the previous cameras were quite well built also. And the battery life is now doubled! One benefit in keeping the same size sensor is that the lens remains the same and that is a very good thing as it is an exceptional lens, which means it needs far less in camera corrections than other lens in competing cameras which in turn means higher corner sharpness. Though I wish it started at 24mm, I realize that would shorten the telephoto reach and that I wouldn't want. JPEGs from this version are excellent, they have none of the dreaded digital look that others in the class suffer from, just remember to set the NR to -2(its lowest setting) and you will be rewarded with very natural images that show off Fuji's excellent color palate. And there are those great film simulations, I quite like the new Classic chrome one. Of course, as true of all these cameras it is best to keep the ISO to 800 or below, best results are at 400 or below. But this is not as limiting as it seems given the fast lens and its excellence wide open. For us RAW users there is much to work with in the RAW files, dynamic range for example is much better than one would think given the sensor size, and there is a lot of detail in those files. I have produced excellent 13x19 prints from low ISO files. Bottom line: this camera is an absolute joy to use with all the controls and conviences one could want with very intuitive handling. It is a true photographic instrument very capable of producing excellent results. If this is the last of this series, Fuji can be proud of this final version. As always, B&H Photo is a joy to deal with, if you shop in store you will find the salespeople extremely knowledgable, helpful and patient and online the shopping experience couldn't be better.
I bought the an X30 two years ago for an Italy trip and have now taken a few thousand frames with it with great results. I had owned several high quality SLR's and was tired of their bulk. At the time the X-30 and the Sony A6000 were the only compacts around $600 with OLE EVF's. I choose the X-30 because it was considerably smaller than the A-6000. A month ago, my sister called me for a recomendation on a camera to buy and I recomended she buy a Camera like the Fugi X-30, assuming that two years later there would have been a bunch of premiere compact cameras come on the market in the price range and below featuring OLE EVF's. My sister ended up buying an X-30 (paying $100 more than B & H's price) which prompted me to see if she could have done better. After looking ... Camera has a metal body and just reeks of quality in every detail. Perfect travel, street photography or everyday camera, with out the creative constrictions of a Point and Shoot. You will like it.
I brought the X-30 along with my Fuji x100s and teleconverters for a family vacation which was fast paced involving extensive touring in cities, mountains, deserts and beaches. I ended up using the x30 while the x100s sat in my bag despite its bigger sensor. The 28 -112 zoom enabled me to enjoy the sites without having to change lenses. 28mm worked great for people and tight cityscapes without the distortion of a 24mm that is present in other small cameras. Because it was designed as a camera for photographers rather than an electronic device that shoots photos, I could very easily capture images of my family as well as use it in street photography with it's quiet shutter. There is no waiting to zoom electronically as the sony and Panny compact cameras require you ... The 28 -112 zoom enabled me to enjoy the sites without having to change lenses. 28mm worked great for people and tight cityscapes without the distortion of a 24mm that is present in other small cameras. Because it was designed as a camera for photographers rather than an electronic device that shoots photos, I could very easily capture images of my family as well as use it in street photography with it's quiet shutter. There is no waiting to zoom electronically as the sony and Panny compact cameras require you to do. This has a fast F2-2.8 manual zoom. I could quickly change settings. I also used it in Program mode and let the camera bake the jpegs using mostly Astia and ClassicChrome with some Velvia. I set max iso at 800 and also used the built in fill flash as needed. There is no inconvenient clip on flash. The built in large EVF is not an afterthought but is part of the design and is sharp and a joy to frame subject matter with. Many people immediately dismiss the 12mp sensor as too small and too noisy. They feel that a larger sensor will yield better photographs. This may be true but photography is not about an analysis of noise and pixel size but the enjoyment one gets from holding a camera and taking a photograph with ease and the x30 nails it. My first digital camera was a 2000 3mp Canon S30 and I still have framed prints from it. If your goal is to buy a camera that has to fit in your pocket with the largest sensor and you like spending time on the computer editing large files then this is the wrong camera for you but if you want to go back in time to how cameras felt during the film age, if you are old enough, then the x30 is for you. It is the feeling I remembered shooting with my Minolta rangefinder and Contax T2 and G2. The color and sharpness of the photographs are beautiful. The bottom line is that this is such an enjoyable camera to use and it's output renders gorgeous jpeg images.
This is an update of my previous review. After one year, I have to say that this camera is almost unbeatable for travel, considering its price tag. It's not perfect, but what is ? My main comply is the so-so high iso performance. If you like to shoot low light pictures, please have a mini tripod in your bag and it will surprise you. The lens IS works very well and the lens itself is VERY sharp. Color rendering is awesome and the physical knobs and controls are a plus compared to other cameras. The EVF is the best i've seen in any camera of this class. It's even beter than the Sony RX100 III and IV. The user interface is another strong point. I really do love this camera after retiring and selling off my pro Nikon, Hasselblad and Wisner gear. My criticism of Fuji's Owner's Manual, however, remains. It is for the take-it-out-of-the-box-and-start-shooting buyer. But if you want to learn how to really use the menu features, there is a real manual at the Fuji web site yet, it, too, is not that easy to find for this camera. Again, Larry took me through this particular page on the site and walked me through the areas of concern. Otherwise as a camera for street or travel photography, X30 is great and a lot of fun. Import the photos into your computer (preferably with a large display) and you will be amazed by the color quality and detail. As one critic noted, it would have been nice if Fuji had raised the bar a bit from the X20 and designed it for at least 16MP. But the feel of a real camera with just enough heft to it, along with great image quality, makes me feel like I have everything I need. Once I am comfortable with X30, and with Fujifilm's menu options and the online manual, I will probably buy the new X Pro 2 in a few months. I would rate this a Five-Star camera with 16MP and better access to the camera's functions at the company site. So, Four-Star for now.

I've spent a lot of time with this camera at the beginning just experimenting with different settings, lots of trial and error here. I'm waiting for someone on youtube (fujiguys?) to come out with a good instructional video on this camera. I will echo what others have said; since the reputation of the camera is that it produces great jpegs, I've not experimented too much with shooting in RAW. I've shot a lot in the many various film simulations and the filters, and the camera produces really great and interesting artistic results. If you're looking for a camera that will help you create images with great colors and gives you options to produce artistic images, this camera is easy to set up and use for that. The camera allows you to set up all sorts of bracketing, of film simulations, white balance, exposure compensation, ISO, and lets you really stretch out the cameras capabilities. The other thing that the camera does a good job at, you can customize the cameras buttons to do what you want it to, and there is a Q button on the camera that is customizable for easy access to those functions that you want instant access to. Once you learn the camera, and decide what you want and where you want it, you have a truly unique tool that is easy for you to use to quickly access the types of settings that you want to achieve your particular goals for the upcoming shot you want. I will also comment here that the face detection feature works really great. When shooting group shots of people, I've had difficulties with other cameras in making sure everybody's face is in focus, and with face detection here on this camera, I've had much good luck getting everybody's face to be in focus. I'm very pleased with this feature and have added it to one of the customizable buttons to make it something easy to turn on and off as needed. I've been very pleased with IQ, but keep in mind that after some experimentation, I've deduced that I have to cap the ISO at 3200 because images above this ISO are noisy, keep in mind that this is a smaller sensor than the more expensive cameras out there, so in my mind, this doesn't count as a knock on this camera. The camera is small, it fits well in the hand, it has a great solid weight and feel to it without being heavy and clunky, it's quiet and unobstrusive, but it's not so small that it will fit in a jeans pocket, i put a strap on it and it's very light. All in all, it's a fun camera that is easy to use, once you figure everything out, and once you get it customized to your way of shooting, and it produces really great results. I am happy with the camera.

First let me say that I always use a wrist strap along with a neck strap so as to not drop it on close by objects such as a countertop or a concrete picknick table like I did with an old fixed lens way back when and damaged my lens. This lens is more than amazing, it is simply perfectly matched to the sensor and abilities of the camera. I heard the dogs barking outside and I simply grabbed the camera with its nice zoom ran out the door to see Elk rambling across the road. having it set on single point focus I got many breathtaking shots of the beasts. On the was back I started reliving the incident, had I used my changeable lens cameras I would have ran out ... Also most likely wouldn't had them out and ready as with the X30. then possibly having to change the lens I would have missed out. The X30 has great and easily accessed JPEG filters for when I dont feel like spending a lifetime processing RAW files. On spot focus I easily get many good shots of my dogs and kids. My wife picked it up and being a little impatient with my changeable lens cameras, claimed ownership of the Fuji lol. Guess what will be under the tree next Christmas??? You can select EVF only (great for plays and concerts) or Rear screen only or both as when putting your eye to the EVF the rear screen shuts off. Battery life is amazing and I bought an extra for close to 1,000 shots using EVF only when I travel S.E. Asia jungles and dont have access to charge it. Lets see 12mp on a 2/3 sensor... Just a short time ago the youtube reviewers called this a large sensor more than enough for great shots (they were right). How soon paid reviewers change their tune so they can sell you the megapixel war game. I have a 24mp changeable lens camera and (Never) wished I had more on this camera with this amazing lens. In fact if I had to live with just one camera I would sell my sonies. What is the X30 missing? Well nothing. Its built like a teeny tiny tank and has built in flash plus hot shoe and all important evf for sunny days and conserving battery. plus a tilty screen if you want above head or below knee shots. Did I mention how beautiful fuji does color? so much better than my sony cameras, I almost bought the RX100 but it was too high and my A600 and 5100 always leave me feeling a little disconnect with them. This Fuji feels like an old friend who is eager to give you shots to be proud of. I love the Super macro setting and this lens picks up every detail and color and Im Blown away with this bonus. The dial ring is such a great customizable feature. Video is great and at 24fps its like watching a theater style movie. Sure you have 60fps HD available for things like slow motion and all but nothings as warm as the 24fps mode. Not only would I buy another on but I will buy one for my wife. I went out on the motorcycle the other day and it was so nice having this camera around my neck just begging me to pull over at different times and just taking photos of the things I normallly dont even pay attention to. So stop playing the tech wars and get back to enjoying your time spent in the field, on the road, at your friends or street photography. This camera is such a breath of fresh air.
