Got this one in Violet (really a deep blue) not purple, as a level 1 open box at a great price I should add. No imperfections to be found and as new (mint) condition. The set up was a challenge. It took a few times of removing the neck to get the relief where I like it. I think because the neck is so...substantial. Got the string action right but the nut was way too high. I almost gave up but took to it with nut files and finally got it playable. I replaced it with a tusq nut (very little sanding required) and it got even better.I fine tuned by setup skills and now have a unique (the only Fender hardtail in regular production) strat that never gets put away. Highly recommended but it may need a good setup!

I purchased mine used. Used "high end" MIM Fender guitars are often a great value. At 599.99, this is one of the best Stratocasters I've ever experienced. The guitar has an early 1960s feel. The glossy neck isn't too thick or too thin. The vintage style bridge intonates well; it also works well for palm muting. After being strung with medium gauge strings(.11 - .49) this guitar sings through my Blues Junior III. The pickups are great. I will put them against boutique vintage-style Stratocaster pups. I am a proponent of hard-tail Stratocasters. Not having a wang-bar reduces weight; it also improves sustain and tuning stability. I would like to see Fender continue this model. Yipes, this one is scary good! If you have any Robert Cray recordings, this particular guitar really nails his sound. Although I really love all of these artists, this guitar is no Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, SRV signature guitar, and good luck with any Jimi Hendrix or Rory Gallagher imitations on this baby. Rather, this is almost like a vintage Strat, the sound is so clean and pure. In other words, it sounds better clean, with very little gain applied, so this is not for every player. Also, this is a "hard tail" guitar (no vibrato) so that may have a lot to do with this sound. Not a bad pick-up in the bunch, they are all great and add to the unique sound. Nice neck (back side), fingerboard and frets, as well. Why anyone would change-out anything on this guitar is ... MoreYipes, this one is scary good! BTW, I have the 2-tone color version, quite pretty. I'm glad to have this one in the family!

I read so many great reviews of this guitar and I'm a big fan of Robert Cray, so I decided to go for it and buy this as a special order item from Guitar Center. Waited 6 weeks for delivery and in the process Guitar Center kept me updated, so kudos for that. I'd read that some don't care for the feel of the neck - a little deeper C-shape than more modern Strats. Not a problem for me at all. I have larger palms and not terribly long fingers, so that may be the difference between the reviews and my feelings about the neck. Finish on the guitar was great, although the fret ends were a little ragged compared to an American Strat they were better than most MIM's I've played, and the sound was absolutely great as expected.I noticed when I tuned the guitar that the low E ... Finish on the guitar was great, although the fret ends were a little ragged compared to an American Strat they were better than most MIM's I've played, and the sound was absolutely great as expected.I noticed when I tuned the guitar that the low E string tended to buzz a little and the intonation was a little off and thought a minor adjustment to the bridge was probably needed. However, when I put the guitar down I could see that the neck was not set straight into the body of the guitar. Looking "birds-eye" at the fretboard, the strings were centered at the nut but shifted to the edge of the fretboard at the 12th fret. I know for YouTube videos this can be corrected - but this is not something that should happen on a brand new guitar. This one should never have passed QC and left the factory.Bottom line for me: guitars are individually produced, assembled and QC'd. Be very careful with special order items - some are probably great but there may be problems with others. Although I love the sound of the Cray Strat and the hard tail bridge, I opted for the more sure thing and bought an American made Strat.
I've generally had a strat in the house since shortly after I started playing in 1977 or so, as an 18 year old. It's my "home" instrument - I can vacation with and enjoy other guitars, but I always come home to a strat. But I'm not and never have been a tremolo guy - I've always either decked or blocked the trems in my Strats. So the idea of a hardtail always appealed to me. This is my first actual hardtail and it's my favorite strat, probably not because of that, but it doesn't hurt! This is the best sounding strat I've ever owned - the pickups are great and whatever else contributes to the tone gets it right too. The feel is almost as good as the sound. I've had some really sublime feeling strats over the years - I wouldn't say this is better than all of those, ... I tend to prefer maple fretboards to rosewood, but this rosewood plays great and the neck shape fits me really well.Bottom line - I'm a lifetime strait guy and I've owned a few and played a lot of them, and this is my favorite strat I've ever picked up. It's largely a matter of personal preference, but this one is a perfect fit for me. And the Inca Silver looks just wonderful too, particularly with a rosewood board and mint pick guard.
The guitar sounds great. My issues are with the aesthetics. The violet color is very disappointing. It is flat. It could have benefitted with a little bit of fine metal flake. As is, the color has no depth at all and is more in line with something out of the Squire series rather than a professional grade instrument. This guitar is not well carried in retail stores, so I had no opportunity to examine it before my purchase. Had I seen it in person, I would not have selected it. Also the rosewood fretboard had a blonde discoloration about half way down on the specific guitar I received. It probably should have been sold as a "blem" or second or whatever the appropriate term is for a cosmetic discoloration. So I would probably buy this guitar again but in a different ... I have always enjoyed going after an Fender Artist model guitar, owning an Eric Johnson, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, SRV, Eric Clapton, and recent a John Mayer. There are still more to come which included the RC Strat. I was reluctant at first as I couldn't find one anywhere to try out. In speaking with a friend who had, he told me it was similar in feel to my EJ Strat around the 5th/6th frets in radius and thickness. Loving the EJ I decided to buy the 3 tone burst. Reviews had been excellent for the MIM version. I was extremely pleased with the guitar on arrival at the overall appearance. Plugging in, I got excellent bluesy tones, no fret buzz, no adjusting needed. The weight and feel of the guitar is perfect for me. My hand glides along the neck. Tuners were and ... Tuners were and tone/vol knobs all seem fine to me. No paint or QC flaws found. I've played and owned MIM and to be honest, never had issues with any of them and I use all my 19 (and counting) guitars extensively which have never given me a concern. Next up is the Jimmie Vaughan Strat
I have owned a few Fender Strat's over the years; and, I sold all but two of them. One was stolen (a 1957), and my newly acquired "blemished" Level 2 RC Hardtail. It's Violet with a Rosewood fingerboard which feels great. I needed to adjust the truss rod to get the action to Fender's specification of 0.010 at the 8th fret. And, it was essential to subsequently reset the intonation. From there, the instrument has been a joy to play. I especially love the hardtail bridge, partly due to the fact that I have played Telecasters for decades. I don't have to be concerned about wang-bar worries nor intonation disappointments. Yes, Hardtail Heaven. I expect to enjoy my Fender RC Strat for many years to come. For me, it is a great value.
Going to have to rate this in three parts.ONE: purchasing process was awesome, Rep. practically took me by the hand and worked out an awesome deal on the guitar, Hard shell case and set of strings ... Very nice experienceTWO: Taking delivery and initial thoughts. Well could have been much better. The overall fit and Finnish was very good, pickups sounded much better than I thought they would and all switches and electronics worked very well. . MASSIVE fret buzz from the 5th fret up and after the 12th fret NON playable really sucked bad.Not happy at all.Three: Took the guitar to my Luther I have dealt with since mid 60's cost me 120.00 for him to set up the guitar. More than just another MIM Stratocaster or an affordable version of the Custom Shop Robert Cray Stratocaster, my MIM Robert Cray sunburst Strat is like a time capsule sent from the 60s. Sure you could have bought one just like this back in the day, but those days are long gone. Fender did a great job in creating an affordable, well made Strat that is as attractive and true to form as it is a pleasure to play and hear. The early 60s neck is period correct and a wonderful fit if you appreciate a larger C shape with broader shoulders than typical. The period correct minty green 3 ply pickguard is likely to be exactly what your genuine 1966 Strat's pickguard might look like if you had one. Whether or not this Strat is for you may be another matter. For me it is perfect. ... Whether or not this Strat is for you may be another matter. For me it is perfect. My advice is to play and listen to one first. I like the sound of a hardtail, you may or may not. I was amazed that this Strat arrived perfectly set up. I checked neck relief, string height and pickup height. All were dialed in, which is a good thing because I wasn't looking forward to adjusting the neck relief from the heel of the neck, even if it is period correct. Nostalgia comes with a price.Improvements? A oil finish, rather than polyurethane, on the neck would have been perfect.Biggest surprise - how nice the vintage style tuners work. Smooth and precise. The included, somewhat cheesy, gig bag might have kept the cost down and certainly protected the perfect open box model during shipping that arrived promptly, but this Strat deserves better so buy her a nice hard case. She looks fabulous in tweed.
