EVH - 5150 Iconic Series 40W 1x12 Combo - Ivory

Not sure why some are saying untrue things about this Bad ass amp! It brought my Wolfgang guitar ALIVE! SO MUCH AMP in a 40 watt combo and when dialed in, it totally has that vintage and modern EVH sound so what more can you ask for! Dont wait, BUY IT! :)

5150 Iconic

Sound:The EVH 5150 Iconic Combo sounds great. In my opinion, it does what it sets out to do. You can't go into it expecting it to be one of the Stealth Models - it's not that. It is a very straightforward and easy to use amplifier, and it will do pretty much whatever you need it to do.Features:It's versatility, and the built in noise gate and boost. All high gain amps should have a noise gate built into it in today's day and age.Ease of Use:It was super easy to get a great sound out of the the EVH 5150 Iconic Combo. I started with everything (except reverb and gate) set to noon, and plugged in and let her rip. I have to do a bit more tweaking with the clean channel, but this thing REALLY shines with the overdrive on. I have to do a bit more tweaking with the clean channel, but this thing REALLY shines with the overdrive on. To me (much like the original 5150 from the 90s) that is where money is. The red channel is pretty good too. By itself, the red channel sits between the green channel with overdrive on and the red channel with burn - and tbh I prefer it with the burn button off. Cranking the gain will take away some of your playing dynamics, and on both channels I found that setting it between 11 and 1 'o clock was sufficient.Quality:The amp appears to be solidly built (I've only had it for four days, so time will tell) It's quite heavy, and looks good. The footswitch was quite a bit smaller than expected, but seems like it's ruggedly built with a long cable.Value:I think the EVH 5150 Iconic Combo is a great value for the price range it sits in. It would have been better at the $799 price, but hey - inflation is what it is.The Wow Factor:I mean, it's a 5150 - you are going to get what you pay for. I wish the overdrive on the green channel could be kicked on with a footswitch.Overall:I really enjoy this amp. It sounds much better than what I expected, and it's very straight forward to use. Straight plug and play - no boosts necessary :D

Awesome Amp!

Purchased the 40 watt Iconic combo after considering the 15w to replace an AC15. Size is very similar in comparison. I also have a EVH Stealth lunch box but the sound felt like it was missing that classic EVH tone. The 40w 6L6 provide a much more familiar tone compared to the ELH84 in the stealth. I was also interesting in how to pair the two amps and discovered the 40W has a pre amp out which solved that question to my delight. Cable in the FX return of the Stealth the Iconic controls the tone. Put it into the front and I can stage the red channels and shape the tone in the Stealth. Delay had to into the effects loop to get better clarity. The Clean channel unboosted is very low and when the boost is added the volume shoots way up. Crunch channel is sweet though ... MorePurchased the 40 watt Iconic combo after considering the 15w to replace an AC15. Size is very similar in comparison. Crunch channel is sweet though and the red channel sizzles! I add a MXR noise gate in the loop with great success. There is an onboard gate but only works for the red channel. If deciding between the 15w or 40w go bigger!

Dead on arrival

Overall:I opened the box, pulled all the contents out and set it up. Now, I had power as the light was on. I played with the switches in the back for 1/4 vs full power, the standby and nothing. Now I have plenty of amps. So, I thought ok I'll unplug the 2-Button Footswitch and see if that's the problem. I also changed cables and guitars as I have many amps and all this equipment outside of the amp works in all my other stacks and amps but there was no sound. Finally, I plugged in a brand new cable out of packaging, plugged it in and just touched the tip while settings out low. Nothing.Extremely disappointed. I decided not to exchange it for another one.

Great so far

Overall:I got this so I can do some recording in my apartment, 1/4 power feature is amazing, this thing responds as if I was at concert volume, speaking of which at full power this thing is loud. The closed back cabinet is nice this thing chugga chuggas great and drives great too. I found the red channel almost to be too much, like in a good way

ROCK MONSTER

Extremely harmonic distortion that will please anyone from dirty blues to classic rock. Powerful tone controls that dial in your sound easily plus a nice reverb. If clean is what you want it can do that too with a gain control to bring it into a blues breakup !!! Channel one does have an overdrive button to give you classic rock and foot switch to channel two for lead work and a higher or lesser sound. Don't worry it's 40 watts of tube power is loud enough for anything live plus XLR speaker emulator out for the big stuff. Again, the hybrid preamp section has been well engineered and I have to restate how harmonic the distortion is in either channel. Here is a nice little secret and that is if you have a favorite speaker it will happily trade out the stock say with ... MoreExtremely harmonic distortion that will please anyone from dirty blues to classic rock. There is a speaker select switch for 4, 8, and 16 Ohm impedance. With a speaker change you can change the amp's flavor as tube power sections react beautifully with different speakers. There is a 1/4 power or full power selector switch which is nice for a softer blues feel or practice volume. Ed would be really happy with this addition to his legacy. I love the damned thing !!!!

Review of EVH 5150 Iconic Series 40W 1x12 Combo Ivory

Very happy with the amp, it took about a week for me tweaking to get it dialled in as it’s a very different kind of amp than I’m used to. But now it’s really great!

Rock Solid

This amp runs the gamut from standard clean to pushed clean to crunchy to fully saturated forever sustain. The distortion is fabulous. Responds nicely to volume knob changes and picking dynamics. It has a voicing that is familiar yet its own. The clean tone is also very usable so it can be the workhorse amp that does it all. The effects loop is great. The reverb is OK. It is loud. Even at ten watts you won't get past three on the volume dial to maintain bedroom / apartment levels. Bought it on a Sunday afternoon, played all afternoon and all night. Called in sick Monday morning and played all day. It's a keeper...

The best Amp I have played in years!

I went to go try the Amp out at the Guitar Center in Phoenix. Wally brought it to me right out of the box in the Platinum room. I plugged in my Les Paul Studio Ttibute. Turned on the Amp, set the settings in every possible way it could be played. Clean, distorded, loud and low. The best Amp that I have ever played through in years. I have played through them all for over 35 yes professionally. I bought it on the spot. The first one to be sold there. Try it and you will buy it. I recommend it for everyone.

This Amp Slays!

I have the EVH 5150 III 6L6 and EL34, which are great amps, but I kept hearing how aggressive and raw the older block letter 5150 sounded, and that's more of my groove. I was hoping the Iconic captured that, and I have not been disappointed. I've not taken it out to a show yet, but I sure do get a big smile every time I plug in. It doesn't even have to be cranked to sound great! I have several high gain amps (including the Mesa Mark V, Mesa Badlander, Engl Savage, Engl Powerball), but the EVH Iconic is probably the most fun to play... it's tight but still forgiving somehow. It's even more impressive considering the price. My only concern is the long-term reliability, but only time will tell. For now, I'm going to enjoy this killer amp. I wish I would have picked one ... MoreI have the EVH 5150 III 6L6 and EL34, which are great amps, but I kept hearing how aggressive and raw the older block letter 5150 sounded, and that's more of my groove.
