After using DAKINE products for years, I am happy to report that the Hot Laps lives up to their level of quality and detail. I switched to this pack after using the Nomad Hydration Pack, and have NO REGRETS. The organiztional comparment holds all your stuff fine, I have fit a Large tube (2.7 - 3.0"), small pump, multitool, bike tool, levers, keys, small parts kit (Patches, and Magic Links), phone and a couple of snacks. It gets tight, but that is what you want from one of these. Side compression straps are key as you can tighten down the pack as you drink down your water to keep it from bobbing around. 2L of water is plenty for most rides, still room to attach jacket on back for rainy days.Only gripe is Waist belt and bladder hose could use about 2 more inches in ... MoreAfter using DAKINE products for years, I am happy to report that the Hot Laps lives up to their level of quality and detail. I have about a 38" waist (not typical for MTBers, I know) and the pack barely fits. Also switched the hydration hose valve for a quick disconnect. You can get the part direct from Hydrapak for like $5, and it works perfect. Was skeptical of the magnetic catch on the hydration, but as long as its aligned properly, I haven't had it pop off accidentally while riding.Overall, I probably will never go back to wearing a backpack after using this, its PERFECT! Don't think about it, just make the switch, your sweaty back will thank you.

Great pack, nice quality, good features and construction. Except...The waist strap is REALLY short. I mean, you had better have <32" waist to use this, or it simply will NOT fit. I am 6'3" with a 36" waist and the waist strap is easily 4" too short at full extension.Customer service is lacking as well, I emailed Dakine asking for an extension, or even asking for matching buckles so I could make my own, and got no reply. I'll be returning this and getting an Osprey, because it's absolutely unsusable for me, Which I find disappointing since I used to live in Hawaii and had a favorable opinion of Dakine products.Be sure to try it on first before ordering, unless you are a smaller person.

While I like the look (i got the faded camo pattern) the bladder tastes HORRIBLE! I've cleaned it, drained it, now it's in the freezer. It may be unusable for me. I've had Platypus and Camelback and never remember the taste being so strong and bad. Will likely need to buy another bladder so I can actually use it as a hydration pack. Now it's just a cool medium big fanny pack.

The new Hot Laps 2L is a great lightweight minimalist pack. I also have the previous version of the Hot Laps 2L which was a good pack. The updates to the new pack make it truly great! The internal storage pockets and straps in the main compartment give you space to secure a mini-pump, multi-tool, and other assorted items. The addition of a second stow-able water bottle pockets really makes this pack an option for longer rides. The additional gear straps are also fantastic options. I've worn this pack on some very hot and sweaty rides, and I haven't managed to sweat through the back panel of the new model. This was a common occurrence on the previous version. The separate soft lined pocket is great for a phone or glasses. It fits my large format iPhone XR even with a Lifeproof case on it. If you have a friend to hand your old Hot Laps 2L down to, this one is definitely worth the upgrade. It's a great value for the price.I did have one of the snaps on the stow-able water bottle pockets break right out of the box. Dakine worked with me to immediately replace the pack. I've had ZERO issues with the new one. Dakine truly stands by their products which is also great to see.
I've really enjoyed this pack - great storage and fits snugly against my lower back with all the straps. The magnet is also super solid and the bag seems durable with good zippers and good construction. My only complaint is the lack of features on the water bladder. The bite valve has no shut off switch so it can leak water when you squeeze it in and out of the holder area, which you have to do since the hose doesn't have a detach clip! I bought the 2021 version and noticed the different mouth pieces in the standard pics vs action pics in the description area, and noted the lack of detach clip / twist shut valve mentioned in the pack description. Still, being that the Lumbar Replacement Reservoir 2L page description states it is "the same one that comes in our mountain bike hydration packs," I made the incorrect assumption I was getting a modern resevior with features that all other hip pack reseviors offer. I'll keep the bag and purchase a 3rd party hose converter kit, but it seems like Dakine cheaped out and just wants another $40 for features that Osprey and Camelbak already give for free. Still, the bag looks amazing and I stoked to keep using it. A+ for the bag, C for the resevior.
The bag itself is great. It can hold snacks, a spare tube and tire levers, a mini pump or shock pump, a multi tool, a phone and some other stuff easily. If you use the water reservoir it obviously takes up some space but it’s still holds plenty. Major kudos to Dakine for adding compression straps to the sides and bottom. The only thing that keeps this setup from being a 5/5 is the included water reservoir. There’s nothing wrong with the reservoir itself but the hose doesn’t have a quick disconnect and that makes it awkward to get the reservoir in the bag or to remove it to refill. I bought a quick disconnect and attached it just far enough that the quick disconnect is outside the bag when attached. I bought a quick disconnect and attached it just far enough that the quick disconnect is outside the bag when attached. That way I can disconnect my hose and attach it directly to a gravity filter or at bare minimum make it far easier to remove the reservoir from the bag without having to thread the entire hose through the slit in the side of the bag.
Been on many day rides with this since I bought it. It’s a nice bag with the perfect capacity. It does feel a little heavy loaded up with water. My gripe is that it comes loose when riding. At some point it’s flopping around and I’ll have to stop and cinch it down again. I’m an average size guy, maybe on the skinny side. Would be nice if it came with a clip or something. I use a safety pin now.
In no way would I say this is the ideal way to carry water on a ride (ideal being a water bottle on your frame that never runs out of water), but this is way better than a backpack for me. I have a smaller backpack that holds 1.5L of water with no extra storage capacity, so it is really small and pretty comfortable for mid-length rides. But my worst enemy for a while has been going out for a 20-30 mile ride and taking my pack that holds 3L of water and 1 mile in my back is hurting and I feel totally restricted in my movement.I wrote off hip-packs for a few years now assuming that they must feel extremely awkward and throw everything off, but after a recent ride with my bigger pack I knew I had to at least try one. The way I see it, a bigger riding pack already straps around your waist so this can?t be worse. So, if you struggle with the comfort and movement issues with a backpack that I do, I can say that this hip-pack completely eliminates those issues. It took me about 2 miles on my local trails to get adjusted to how this feels when riding aggressively, and when pedaling/climbing it had little-to-no effect on my riding. After my first ride I realized I never once thought about any discomfort. Yes!!On top of all that, I am super impressed with the features and quality of this pack. I have had so many Dakine products over the years and will always be impressed with their unique ability to make such utilitarian products that just simply work and last forever.P.S. the magnet clip for the bite valve is super secure and easy to use.
Purchased for mountain biking local trails. really like design and size but bladder appeared to be an older version without the quick-release where the hose connects to the bladder. Therefore had to return. This quick release hose makes cleaning the bladder and hose much easier and looks to be included on currently sold Dakine bladders.
this is my first lumbar pack, i've been biking with the same camelback for almost 20 years. I really like this: my shoulders and back are cooler, this pack is comfortable. i like how the nozzle clips to the belt with a magnet, so its easy to drink while pedaling. This is large enough for me to ride 2-3 hours as long as I just need the usual (light jacket, couple snacks, water, toolkit, chapstick, dog bowl, gummy candies, car keys). I love how the hip pocket fits my iphone 12 mini.
