I had been looking for a camera with many pro features (esp. RAW format, rapid shots per second, quality of photos, zoom extension beyond 100mm, and overall customizabilty of the camera itself based on need) that I could use when I do not have my regular DSLR around (in my instance, it is the Canon EOS 5DS). I would use such a camera for sports events (e.g., pro stadiums where large DSLR are frowned upon) and trips abroad where small and light are worth their weight in gold. I could not find this kind of camera until the Canon Powershot G3X. Sure, it is a pricy piece to put out, but if it delivers, so be it. So far it has delivered in all aspects that make shooting with it feel like a DSLR without the cumbersomeness of weight and mass. The G3X is a power packed ... It begs you to push it harder and to discover features hidden within. While all features are easily accessed in its camera menu, these same features can be customized thru various buttons to be easily available when shooting under the pressure of the moment. The only negative I could find so far is the Wifi feature. For some reason it does not work for me when I try to set it up to download to my Macintosh computer. I am not a nerd, but I am pretty computer savvy, and for some reason the G3X does not connect to the Macintosh computer running OS El Capitan. The G3X accepts all of the input for name and password of the network setup but when it tries to connect, it spins for minutes until it times out without connecting. Canon pushes the WPS Connection mode to the network setup, but, as anyone knows, the WPS Connection is not that secure, and Apple has abandoned it on its networks. Consequently, the only way to connect to the available networks that the G3X finds, and as noted initially this does not work. That being said, the wifi fiasco is a non issue for me simply because the other features are so well integrated that I would be a fool to think I could find a comparable camera offering more, at least for me. So, my advice is, consider what features are important to you, and see if the G3X has them. If it does, then I would, at the very least, try it out.

For my fellow DSLR users out there who simply need something more portable when changing lenses just isn't practical, this camera is perfect for you. It was time to upgrade my camping/travel camera from an older Canon PowerShot superzoom/point-and-shoot. The one inch sensor, 25x zoom, and all the manual adjustments on here is what really appealed to me. I have not been let down! The photo quality from this camera is comparable to an entry-level DSLR, in my opinion. Images are clear, with that nice blurred background that you wouldn't achieve so well with a little point-and-shoot. I feel like I can travel and be truly satisfied with my photos now, instead of constantly wishing I was able to take my bulky DSLR with me.The touchscreen is something new to me, and I'm ... Although the Canon system is still button-friendly, the ability to select what I want on the screen just makes things that much faster.I paid extra for the Canon lens adapter (67mm), lens hood, a couple of filters, and a new Canon lens cap to fit over the filters. Yes, it was inconvenient, but it's well worth it. The adapter is very secure, and the lens hood is a great fit. I have no issues with any of it. I don't even turn my lens hood around for storage since it's really not that big, and the lens cap I got is nice and big so I can pull it off and put it on even with the lens hood sticking out.Let's face it, you won't do better for this price range. Go ahead and spend literally double the money for the Sony equivalent. Is 4k video really that important? You'll get essentially the same photos. This camera is such a great deal compared to others out there. You Canon lovers will drool over this thing.Stop thinking about it and just buy it already. You won't be disappointed.

This was a great super-zoom compact camera--for a while. It was very handy to keep in the car for quick super-zoom shots of roadside wildlife. But now, after nearly nine months of use, it suffers from constant lens errors that shut the camera down and require a restart. The lens cannot find focus and appears to "hunt" slowly across the focus range, then beeps and shuts down with the message "Lens error. Will shut down automatically. Restart camera." At first these errors predominantly occurred at zooms over 300mm, but now they also occur in most low light situations as well. Since this covers the conditions in which I use the camera most frequently, it has become completely unusable since the errors now occur routinely.I consulted the web for answers and found a ... It appears to be a frequent problem with the g3x and other Canon point and shoots as well, but I could find no consistent or reliable solutions except returning the camera--unfortunately mine is beyond the warranty period. Based on the report of one person who did return the camera, they received a refurbished replacement camera that soon developed the same problem.I am most unhappy with this is rather expensive small camera!

Any review should always be taken with a grain of salt, keeping in mind, what some people consider important, others will not. Also a 5 star rating would mean that this product is perfect and there was nothing wrong with it. Truthfully, I have not tried every feature available on the GX3, but, thus far, I have been quite pleased with the quality of the photos and video taken. The autofocus for photographs work extremely well in bright light and I have not had any difficulties in low light. I have taken time lapse as well a night shots, and I am quite pleased with the results. I have shot 1080p at 30 fps with the auto settings as well as manual settings in bight light as well as low light. The autofocus worked well for both settings; however, the autofocus does ... I have shot 1080p at 30 fps with the auto settings as well as manual settings in bight light as well as low light. The autofocus worked well for both settings; however, the autofocus does struggle when the lens is extended to it's full range (600 mm), keeping in mind that I was shooting surfers without a tripod. It would be reasonable to expect that shooting anything, fast moving and over 200 mm, you should be using a tripod anyways to steady the shot. The range and quality of the 24-600 mm is amazing for the price as well as an aperture of f/2.8 to 5.6. Mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, although more features, not always better quality, are overrated. The lenses amount to thousands of dollars and are not that fast. I like that the GX3 is weather sealed, which makes for an ideal travel camera .. quality + versatility + portability + price. I am accustomed to having a view finder, and there are instances where it would definitely have been an asset; however, having a built-in viewfinder for Canon would mean that the size of the body would get bigger, moving towards SLR size or M5 size. Instead of carrying a camera and a video camera, I am just using the GX3. Overall, I am quite satisfied with quality, features, and portability.
My workhorse camera has been the EOS 70D with the EFS 15-85 mm zoom lens and I recently added a Sigma 150 - 600 zoom lens to replace the EF 75-300 zoom for those distance shots. I needed a general purpose camera package that I could pack in my carryon bag when I travel by air so I got the PowerShot G3X w lens hood & EVF-DC1 Electronic Viewfinder primarily for that purpose. It worked out awesome for my trip to the 43rd Annual Daytona Turkey Run. A couple of surprise features I really appreciated were the 90 degree electronic viewfinder and ability to shoot both stills & video in AUTO mode without having to set it back & forth. Except for the wide angle 15-85 mm zoom lens on the 70 D camera and its faster lens speed, I now prefer using the G3X out of sheer convenience ... A couple of surprise features I really appreciated were the 90 degree electronic viewfinder and ability to shoot both stills & video in AUTO mode without having to set it back & forth. Except for the wide angle 15-85 mm zoom lens on the 70 D camera and its faster lens speed, I now prefer using the G3X out of sheer convenience for most of my shooting. It isn't perfect but for the hobbyist, it is a fun camera to use, particularly being able to use the 600 zoom range without having to change lenses. The two-piece lens hood and adapter is tricky to master as it has to be disassembled & reassembled for the stowage position. The video button is flush mounted and I have to use my fingernail to actuate it. The image erase & AF Frame selector buttons location require getting used to. G3X image quality is not up to the 70 D but acceptable for most of my needs and there is a delay time for the electronic viewfinder to come on when turning the camera back on that can be annoying when trying to take an impulse shot. I have yet to set up using the WI-FI feature with my smart phone which was another reason I selected the G3X.
I bought this to replace my Canon Powershot G12 which is having lens extension problems. I never used the viewfinder on the G12 since it had no functional value as it is not an electronic viewfinder. The camera was very compact so it was easy to just use the articulating rear view screen. The G3 X is larger than the G12 and has more of a DSLR substantial feel. It needs a viewfinder. Canon missed the boat on the decision to not incorporate a viewfinder in the design. I did purchase the optional viewfinder. The G3 X does not seem to be as fast in continuous shooting under some circumstances as my DSLR but that's OK. I have taken pictures of the moon using the zoom and they are crisp and clear. I have used the star trail setting and am happy with the results. Images of birds and butterflies stationary and flying are clear. If you are expecting this camera do EVERYTHING DSLR cameras do, you are setting it up to fail. If you want something better than a G12 and cellphone camera, that is reasonably compact but not ultra compact, has an extreme zoom and can take better pictures this is a good option. The attached photos are straight from the camera, no photoshop manipulations have been applied.
I've been hard pressed to carry a small digital camera and expect the same results as my 5DMkIII. This camera, to be honest, is still not the same, but I bought it before a Rim To Rim (RTR) Grand Canyon hike a few months ago and it's very good. It's something to grab fast (on backpack strap with Peak Designs CapturePro), take really good photos, and have decent battery life. As the Grand Canyon photos attest, colors are very good, sharpness (what you can see with the mandatory reduced image size) is pretty fine, even if some of the subtleties are lost in the translation to image. Zoomed out, the qualities remain pretty constant, and I have some sharp shots of condors that would please me with my 300mm L lens on my 5D. I bought the electronic viewfinder and have it ... Zoomed out, the qualities remain pretty constant, and I have some sharp shots of condors that would please me with my 300mm L lens on my 5D. I bought the electronic viewfinder and have it on the camera almost all the time. Don't try to judge final colors in an image in the finder, but that's not what it's for anyway. I carried a spare battery going RTR but didn't need it. I'm lazy so I set the camera almost exclusively on AT and the aperture at f11 (all the way), and the ISO on the lowest setting (125). As a lifelong lover of Kodachrome 25, I don't mind a tripod, though the two included photos are both ISO 125, f11 and handheld. Not my 5D, but since I carry it in the pack due to being too heavy for my old chest case and harness, I can snap this off the CapturePro and be taking photos with real weight to them in a fraction of the time. This is not a cheap digital, but the values are proven every time I use it.
I really wanted to give this camera 5 stars or at minimum 4. However, I can only give it 3.Many of the reviews seem to be from DSLR users, so perhaps that is the problem: I am a true point and shoot person, not wanting to set anything manually and wanting the camera to "do the work". I chose this camera as a step up from my Powershot G7 which I loved, hoping that it would take even better pictures than the G7 even at its default settings. Not sure why the camera will automatically set the screen at a lower brightness rather than a higher brightness anyway - perhaps to save the battery? But I wouldn't have guessed I would need to make an adjustment like that.- The colors seem lifeless despite the reviews saying how accurate the colors are. Maybe my subject matter happens to have dull colors, but I don't think so. I'll have to do a side-by-side compare with my G7 to prove what my eyes seem to be seeing. I know i can adjust the color saturation, but I thought a good quality bridge camera would still take better pictures than a simple point and shoot, even at its default settings.- The quality of the photos are somewhat sharp, but some have what's best described as an unreal, unpleasing look to the eye, unlike the G7. I attribute this (possibly) to the approximate 20 MP - perhaps that's too high for the eye (or at least mine?) to handle?- I'm willing to admit it's just me, but the buttons are not intuitive, even when I've used a Canon digital before. I pressed what I thought was the macro button, and something completely different happened, or nothing happened at all. I pressed what looked like a video button, but it wasn't video. I'm fine with learning a new system, but to me, after having used a digital Canon, the controls on the G3 X are not intuitive despite what some reviewers have said.I feel the G7 is well made, and the lens seems to be of good quality and perhaps these are some of the main reasons for the high price point. So perhaps it's all user error and I just need someone to show me how to use my camera. But if a bridge camera cannot take better pictures than a point and shoot without having to adjust the settings, then it doesn't seem a good camera for anyone besides DSLR users who don't want to carry extra lenses. The "average" photographer may be able to get better shots with a far less expensive camera with even a lesser quality lens. I may change my mind, but I'm disappointed by choosing the G3 X especially for the amount of money I spent on it. When I go on my trip to the UK, I don't feel safe bringing this camera alone - I'll have to bring my G7 as a backup in case I don't like the G3 X photos.
I've had mine for just under a year now, and used it for portrait, landscape, macro and astrophotography. And it handles all very well. This is my go to camera for my hiking adventures - the weather sealed body with the long zoom means I have all the versatility I need without fear of the complications that can arise from changing lenses. The 1 inch sensor a minimum f.2.8 aperture means a good amount of light is allowed in and this had led to some great low light shots. As an all round camera this hard to beat. It may seem a little heavy compared to other 1 inch sensor compacts, but the zoom range is 4-5 times larger than most and that is a worthy trade off for weight. My only concern with this camera is the battery life - it can drain relatively fast and often ... My only concern with this camera is the battery life - it can drain relatively fast and often drops from half full battery to nothing in the blink of an eye. Nothing, however, several spare batteries can't solve. I've used this in rain and snow and neither effected the performance. I absolutely recommend this camera - especially for travel and outdoors activities.
I bought this after using my b-in-law's in Germany last year. Right out of the camera with no editing, colors were great, focus sharp, even though I still shot aperture preferred on landscape and still used the Auto setting almost not at all. In other words: good photos are still the result of good camera skills, so the camera helps out more and more, but it still takes human skill to work magic. I've done day trips with my camera pack, even carrying my 5D MkIII w/11-24mm lens weighing the pack down and, used properly, this is the landscape of the gods lens on what is still a great body. But, after leaving that in the car while we did Rim To Rim in Grand Canyon last November, the limitations of this camera's setup were less obvious than it's really good results. I ... I read about some of the new mirrorless gear doing remarkable things, and that might be the wave of the future. But, if you're not looking to invest in a whole new gear paradigm, this fully usable camera with 24-600mm lens does a very credible job. Direct sun shots somewhat baffle it, as do, come to think of it, some rear-sun angles. But, with ISO locked on 100 and a steady rest, colors come out great in longer exposures, and while what I think was a wolverine 400+ yards away on Cascade Pass two weeks ago isn't 'tack sharp', that it was shot with the lens in full extension at such a distance and came out as well as it did, was enough to convince me this is a very worthy camera, without spending $2,000+ on all new gear. And, I can always whip out my 5D if I need something better, though, this camera comes close enough to leave the heavy gear in the car.
