Excellent print quality, easy setup

Short-term review: I am totally impressed by the print quality--so clear and crisp. I recently worked in an office with printer-copier that was worth several thousand dollars, and to my eye, this little Brother is comparable. The setup, using the included CD, was pretty easy. This printer does work on Windows 11, which was an initial concern. Print speed is good. It prints nicely on both sides of a page without you having to manually re-feed it, as I had to do on my earlier printer. This printer is a bit louder than I expected--perhaps 10% louder than my previous Brother laser printer--but it's not bad at all. If you wish, you can put it in Quiet Mode if desired-- this is noticeably quieter. However, it is also slower. It takes longer for the print job to start ... MoreShort-term review: I am totally impressed by the print quality--so clear and crisp. My last home laser printer was a Networked HP2100 that lasted me almost 20 years and it was a 2nd-hand printer when I got it.I love the size of this printer. My HP was bigger easily twice as tall although it did have two paper trays versus the single tray on this Brother. I did like having the ability to have different colored stock in the 2nd tray already on hand. One nice thing about the larger HP printer was when I had to fix something on it or remove a really bad paper jam, there was enough room to get my hands into it.I have my reservations about the manual tray. One nice thing about the larger HP printer was when I had to fix something on it or remove a really bad paper jam, there was enough room to get my hands into it.I have my reservations about the manual tray. Even at the store, I didn't like the design of the manual feed tray. It has a tiny area of paper support which I guess they felt was sufficient since they only support up to 1 sheet at a time. When inserting an 8-1/2 x 11" sheet, about half (5.5") goes into the printer with the remainder just hanging down. I purchased the printer already knowing this.I have not tested envelopes since all my current ones use a "peel and stick" method for sealing and I don't want to take the chance of it peeling off inside the printer. The Brothers printer only has support of PCL6 which should be fine for most people. It has no Post Script emulation which helps to keep the price down (they don't have to pay a license fee to Adobe). Even office Xerox printers started to remove PS emulation to save the customer some money and very few customers would pay for it unless they had an application that needed it.Brothers site says it has resolutions of 600x600 dpi, 2400 x 600 dpi and 1200 x 1200 dpi. From Notepad it shows 300, 600, HQ 1200 and 1200 dpi. From a web page, the options from the printer driver only shows 300, 600 and 1200 dpi (missing HQ).From Photoshop the Brothers driver shows me 300, 600, HQ 1200 and 1200 dpi. It doesn't tell you what HQ 1200 is versus 1200 dpi. The HQ is a special enhancement mode that gives you "1200 dpi - like" quality while not giving you true 1200 dpi thus supposedly faster printing. In Photoshop changing the print setting from "text" to "graphics" made a huge difference when printing a test color picture so don't forget to make that change if you print a picture. The text mode washed out the picture so much that I thought I ran out of ink. Switching to graphics made the picture extremely dark (and probably cost me a ton of normal prints due to wasted ink). Switching to "manual" and adjusting the brightness and contrast helped but I could not find any setting that I liked as there as a lot of banding. When I switch to the built in Windows Photo Viewer it allowed me to pick 300, 600 or 1200 dpi (no HQ 1200). However, going into the 'option...' and 'printer properties...' it brought up the same dialog box that I saw in Photoshop. It also had the HQ 1200 option. I again changed the Print Setting to Manual and adjusted the brightness and contrast as I did in Photoshop and the results were VERY different. The banding was gone. I still could not get a satisfactory print in the half-tones but it was still better then the half-tones when printing directly from Photoshop. I also switched back and forth from Photoshop to Windows Photo Viewer several times and the banding always returned when printing from Photoshop even though I used the Brothers Printer Driver in both. The Brother printer drive does have an option for using the Printer or Systems half-tones. I've always preferred to use the Printers (which is what all my testing has been with) when available but may try the System Halftone options. The thing holding me back with the System halftone settings are there are so many options. There are 19 halftone patters to choose from plus settings for Device Gamma, Pixel Diameter and Luminance. That's a lot of testing combinations using the stock ink cartridge. When my backup ink arrives I may test the options. My HP's resolution was 1920 x 1080 and supported Post Script and the halftones looked better on that 20+ year old printer.I know that is not intended to be used as a photo printer. I use it (and my prior HP) to do basic proofing before taking my b&w pictures to a shop. Everything I do I for personal use or to give away but I still want it to look nice.I hate the lcd display. My printer is at the back edge of a table which puts the lcd screen about 26" away from the front of the tables edge. Even after adjusting the lcd contrast and leaning over the table it is still very hard to read. The lcd screen points straight up. Having it at an angle would have been so much better.Setting it up as a Network printer was not obvious. I had to google it and find that I needed to download, install and use Brothers BRAdmin Light utility. I also discovered BRAdmin Professional to get even more advanced machine management. This is actually a really nice utility as you don't have to use the tiny lcd display. You can make changes on your monitor and "send" the changes to the printer.

Two things I would like to pass on, before you install the toner cartridge, give it a few shakes end to end, then install it. I made the mistake of doing a hard shutdown, the next time I turned it on it had disconnected from the wi-fi, by leaving it turned on it will automatically reconnect if there is a break in your wi-fi signal. You may think as I did that it will use a lot of watts if left on, not true, I used my watt meter and found in sleep or deep sleep mode it draws only 6 watts. Now, when printing is working, it will draw 300-400 watts but only while it is printing, while not printing, it almost immediately go to sleep. I do most of my printing by wireless, I watched the printer information screen, when I pressed print on my iPad, within a second the screen read getting data and within 5 seconds it had printed. Very fast printer and clean print.

Light, small, fast, finding latest driver easy
2 September 2022

I was getting tired of feeding my HP inkjet printer, and its unreliable startup from sleep or wherever it goes sometimes! Happened to see a Consumers Reports article that mentioned for most people who print documents only, the B&W laser printer was a better choice, and this is the model they recommended. I had a laser printer years ago - memories of being huge and very heavy. I was much surprised to see how inkjet tech has moved to light and small! I picked this up with one hand and paper and extra laser cartridge in the other from Best Buy and could not believe how light it was. After 3 weeks of use I loved this thing. Loads of features for the price
12 November 2022

After plenty of research, this is the most feature-packed mono laser printer I found at such a reasonable price. The auto duplex (2-sided) printing capability sealed the deal for me. Other factors in its favour are the compact size & design of the printer, wireless Wi-Fi connection capability, paper tray expandable to handle legal size paper, and single sheet manual feed feature in addition to 200-sheet main paper tray. One issue I've had though is that paper sometimes goes through the single sheet manual feed slot crooked, causing printed page to come out crumpled with off-kilter printing. I haven't had a paper jam so far, but I suspect that could happen so I take care when inserting a sheet in the manual feed slot. Also, connecting the printer to Wi-Fi is a bit ... MoreAfter plenty of research, this is the most feature-packed mono laser printer I found at such a reasonable price. Also, connecting the printer to Wi-Fi is a bit harrowing, but carefully following instructions & being patient while installation software does its thing led to success for me. It's single function mono, so doesn't do scanning or copying or print in colour, but I have a cheap ink-jet all-in-one printer for that. All in all, this is a very reasonably priced yet full featured mono laser printer that should satisfy personal and home office needs.

Love this reliable machine!
31 January 2023

Had an inkjet prior to this machine. Cartridges were insanely expensive, and they would expire and dry out! I determined that I didn’t really need a color printer, because I mainly use it to print out sheet music, recipes, and other text. The double-sided printing feature is extremely handy! …. I found it was very easy to set up, and it works extremely well with my iPhone and two iPads - the printer, so far, has responded almost immediately each time it is sent a print job. Text is clean and clear. Initially, I was debating whether I should get the next model up, the one that includes a scanner. I’m glad I didn’t, because that model is larger than the 2370, and also, I have found that it’s quite simple to just take a picture of a document using a PDF-converting app ... MoreHad an inkjet prior to this machine. Truly happy with this printer!!

Printouts are fine. Some problems not resolved
17 March 2023

Printer works fine, has 'Sleep' mode when not in use for a while and printouts seem fine.Couple of things that I had trouble with:1. Could not get it installed in Internet mode so my laptop could use it, rather than my desktop, to which it is hooked up.2, Cannot seem to set Print Defaults, besides what was originally there. As an example, I want most of my printouts to be ONE-SIDED only, even if document is multiple pages. Whenever printer encounters a file with more than 1 page, it automatically defaults to 2-sided printing. I've tried to set the Defaults to 1-sided, unsuccessfully. It should NOT be THAT hard. So, for all my multiple pages, I have to go into their Defaults and set it to no 2-sided printing, EVERY time.Irritating that these two items - which ... MorePrinter works fine, has 'Sleep' mode when not in use for a while and printouts seem fine.Couple of things that I had trouble with:1. Solid printer, but some issues
15 October 2022

Decent printer, much better than dealing with an inkjet. Set up takes a little time (particularly with wifi), but solid performance with single-sided printing.A few issues:1. Printer cannot connect to the 5GHz band of the wifi, nor will it work when using a VPN. To print, I have to shut off the VPN and change to the 2.4GHz band. Kind of a hassle.2. The refurb model was quite a bit cheaper than new, and now I know why. Duplex printing gets jammed. Every time. This appears to be a common issue, happening eventually to many of their printers (just search "brother printer duplex jam").Once you clear the jam, printing restarts and the jams again until you clear the job. A significant reason I purchased this was for duplex printing, so I miss this function. This ... MoreDecent printer, much better than dealing with an inkjet. This may be fixed by cleaning rollers in the printer, but it would be nice if Brother supplied cleaning/maintenance instructions.3. Not sure why I need to install 3 apps to get the printer working.

Terrible Printer
19 January 2023

we could not be more unhappy with this printer.we print about 10-20 pages per day, which is not a lot at all. when we first purchased the printer, we had issues with double sided printing pretty much right away. we use 67lb cardstock, which is thicker than normal paper but it's not too thick for the printer. I assumed it was a defect of this particular printer, so we replaced it with a brand new one. lo and behold, the replacement ended up having the same issue with double sided printing about two weeks later with consistently mild usage. that leaves us out of our return policy with staples and we're pretty much stuck with this printer that can't do the job.that being said, we decided to put up with the double sided printing issues by manually flipping the pages ... Morewe could not be more unhappy with this printer.we print about 10-20 pages per day, which is not a lot at all. when we first purchased the printer, we had issues with double sided printing pretty much right away. we use 67lb cardstock, which is thicker than normal paper but it's not too thick for the printer. not great quality and toner does not last as advertised
2 October 2022

I bought this printer 2 years ago thinking tone would be better value than inkjet and save paper by double siding. 2 years and I am still very annoyed by this thing. The first one died (like no power at all) just within the warranty period for the manufacturer so I could not return it to Staples. Brother sent me a new one which was kind of a pain to sort out. Then it seemed like we ran out of toner very quickly. I chalked it up to the toner cartridge that the printer came with being for a smaller number of pages. Bought a new cartridge and had to replace it soon after, out of toner. Now on the third cartridge. There is NO WAY we are printing over 3000 (or whatever the claim is) pages per cartridge. What's worse it tells you there is low toner and eventually just stops printing so you can't "squeeze out" a copy. I bought the "name brand" ones too but apparently it does not matter. As others pointed it will go into "deep sleep" or whatever and is a pain to get out. Should have stuck with my 10 year old HP scanner/printer that was still clunking along.
