This is a very fine tool. It is cast metal. It supports Mapp gas and propane so you can get a very hot flame. Turn on the valve, press the yellow button, and it immediately ignites the gas ... extremely convenient. To keep it running without your finger on the yellow button, press down the small metal button and it locks it on ... again, just press the yellow button to disengage the lock. Always remember to turn the round valve off when not in use, otherwise the yellow button could fire up the unit unexpectedly. Because this unit has a pressure regulator, it will operate at any angle. An excellent tool!

Other hardware stores sell the lower rated model TS4000 torch alone for this price, but at Lowes you get the MAPP tank and the TS8000 included. Easily a $13+ valued added at no additional cost. Torch works best for my searing of my Sous Vide cooking of meats and most articles/reviews are for plumbing applications. Internal spark igniter is safest to use and the swirl flame is the hottest. If you want a lower flame just back off either the gas or distance to what you're searing. But when you want to really quickly sear something just on the surface just crank it up and don't stay too long in one area. The 14 oz tank that comes with it is easy to handle even in a kitchen setting and the trigger lock on feature is right at your finger tip to engage if you need to hold ... MoreOther hardware stores sell the lower rated model TS4000 torch alone for this price, but at Lowes you get the MAPP tank and the TS8000 included. For me, I rather just hold the trigger as this sears quick enough for me and it's a safety feature for me to have it shut off instantly in case something unexpected happens in the kitchen and I could accidentally drop the torch. I like to do ribeyes, porterhouse, and sirloins steaks with cooking method and my wife likes the fish I sear for her, too.

I bought this torch specifically to rebuild an old, original carburetor for a 1930 Model A Ford, and this torch supplied the necessary heat to do just that. The Zenith carburetor bottom is made of cast iron and had brass components that were stuck and needed to come out. I simply heated the carburetor bottom to a dull red and then immediately dunked it in cold water. With little effort, the brass parts came right out. I could not have done this with my old, standard propane torch that I use for plumbing. The high-intensity heat provided by this torch did the job perfectly.

I bought this torch to solder new washing machine valves. It did the job without problem, but there are a couple quality of life items I wish it did a bit better. First, it would be nice if it had a finer flame; this isn't a problem with the torch itself, I just would have done more work to find the torch I want. Second, the fitting between the torch and tank could be a bit better, it gives enough resistance to give me pause and worry about cross threading. The second issue is what drops a star on the review.
Whether use intend to use propane or map, get this nozzle. (Make sure it's the one with the yellow trigger). Don't waste your money by trying to save a little and getting a cheaper nozzle. I believe that sometimes it is better to spend a little more than you want to than a little less than you should. (Besides, it isn't really that much more than the cheapest one.) Use it for soldering pipe, brazing, melting, lighting barbeques and fires, melting the sugar on creme brulee ... This nozzle does it all whether large or small. (Didn't really intend to make a rhyme.) I got it for the creme brulee :)
I needed to shape a piece of flat steel, 1/4 x3" x8" to attach a ball hitch to my riding mower. Read the reviews that stated that it had a large flame and was too hot for solder. For this reason I bought it. I wanted a large hot flame to soften the metal. Worked perfectly and heated the metal red hot very quickly. The pricing was good since I'd of paid a welder that much to do it for me and now I have this torch for myself. Great price, great product, and Lowes stands behind it. A happy camper.
Great torch for contractors and handyman alike. This is my third purchase of this exact kit. I gave the other 2 sets to my sons. Super easy and reliable to use. Plumbing, thawing items out, you don’t know you need this tool until you do if that makes any sense. I also loosen rusty nuts from restoration projects. You will use this product more than you will realize. Great product.
Used to desolder deteriorated sink drain straight out of the box. Will also use to solder in new drain. I appreciate this version over others because of the adjustment valve. In addition to being able to regulate the flame (which may benefit me when I solder) it functions as an additional safety. Hard to find, but a fair price at ~65.Wear gloves - gets hot in a BIG hurry. Had a pool of solder out of the joint and on the floor in about 60 seconds. BE CAREFUL! But this is the torch you want.
I was trying to repair some small cracks in a Briggs and Stratton engine using Alumiweld rods that require a temperature between 725 and 750 degF. I purchased the TS8000 with a MAP/Pro cylinder. The torch seemed to have issues with the intensity of the flame but overall was unable to get the temperature of the aluminum casing above 500F. I checked the nozzle and did find some trash in it. The unit was returned to the store where a refund was issued without any problems. Instead of buying a straight replacement I purchased the BZ8250HT and another cylinder of MAP/Pro. I was still only able to get the casing up to 450F. I tried the torch on a small piece 1/16" thick x 1/2" x 1/2" and the piece very quickly started to melt. On the casing I tried varying the flame ... MoreI was trying to repair some small cracks in a Briggs and Stratton engine using Alumiweld rods that require a temperature between 725 and 750 degF. On the casing I tried varying the flame distance and angle but was still unsuccessful in getting hotter than 450F. It seems the issue relates to the total heat the torch can deliver and not the temperature of the gas. This system may be OK for very small pieces and can be worked at lower temperatures but I would not recommend it for larger pieces or when higher temperatures are required. The store staff were very helpful in processing my refund on the TS8000.
Unlike the oxy & Map pro kit, which was garbage, this kit is excellent. The instructions are clear and correct. It started, easily, every time, and did the job! Not only was I able to free up some rusty nuts and bolts, but using this torch was the final step in freeing a hub frozen on a tapered axle. That makes it priceless! It's my new best friend.
