One of the nice features of the router is it has a built in function to automatically restart once a week on a user defined schedule (you can shut it off as well) to ensure the router is refreshed and free of glitches. The router also offers Norton Connect Safe, which is basically a built in Content-control Software that will restrict access to certain types of websites based on selectable levels of filters. This ranges from sites containing malware to adult content, and should be a welcome addition to parents or employers that wish to restrict online access to sensitive content. Although this router does not advertise the use of an external USB drive as NAS, I have found a way to do so. In order to access an attached USB drive functioning as a NAS you have to open a network share by typing \\192.168.2.1 into windows Run dialog, not a browser. This will open a folder in the windows environment where you can access non-media files on the drive. (I could not find any documentation of how to do this online). The down side to accessing files this way seems that the router caps the speed on the USB connection to about 3MB/s, so large files can take some time. I tested a 3.4GB single file transfer which took about 12 minutes to transfer. I have been able to get an average wireless internet speed test of about 100Mbps, by comparison I get an average of 160Mbps on a wired connection when running an internet speed test. Your results will vary. Range is decent, with a drop off of about 30 feet, passing through interior and exterior walls. Aside from the interference that this router initially caused my modem, this router has been flawless in performance and has not glitched once in the 30 days I spent testing it. I would recommend this router to anyone looking for a mid level AC band router, that wants an easy to use, set and forget system with advanced, easy to utilize features.

I'm giving this router three stars for performance, but I'm knocking two stars off for security. Namely, there isn't any. You can't SSL secure the web interface of the router which means that it is wide open to basic attack types. In the age of Internet Of Things this is a pretty large omission. I was also disappointed in the fact that upon accessing the router the web interface shows you the SSID as well as the first character of the WPA2 key. Even showing one character of the WPA2 key cuts down the time it takes to crack the password significantly. I did like the fact that the router checks for a firmware update everytime you log into the interface. I did like the fact that the router checks for a firmware update everytime you log into the interface. However this should really be something that the router is doing in the background at 2 or 3 in the morning by itself. I realize that you run the risk of bricking the device, however the risk of a security hole being exploited because of old software is just as large a problem. And let's face it, when was the last time your parents logged into their wireless router? Never. They had you set it up for them. The good thing is that the performance of this device is really quite good. It throws signal all over my two story town house and it does a better job of getting signal to the garage which my previous router couldn't do. My speed stays up around 200 Mbps with only two bars of strength and the latency doesn't show a large jump. I also liked the fact that the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands can be active at the same time. I have a bridge setup for my entertainment system on the first floor and my NAS and Plex server are on the first floor. I'm now able to use the 5Ghz range for these higher bandwidth streaming devices, and reserve the 2.4Ghz band for phones, laptops and tablets which are just consuming web traffic. I'm not sure how much of this improvement is from the beam forming technology. When You reset this router from a full router to a simple wireless access point (which is how I used it for about 75% of the time) you lose many of the options available in the interface. To be honest I prefer this as I like using another dedicated device for firewall duties. So let's put this in perspective. On one hand this router is fast, easy to setup, and it tries to do firmware updates for you. On the other hand it leaves the web interface open to man in the middle attacks and credential sniffing, and WPS stays on even after you've turned it off. I just can't recommend this router as WPS is a huge vulnerability and allowing continued authentication even when it is explicitly disabled is less than optimal.

Belkin deserves credit for making installation as easy as possible. For example, even the ethernet and power supply is already plugged in the box. There is a pull out card on the bottom that you can file with your password (factory and changed), in addition to the permanent label on bottom. It has the standard 4 gigabit ports, but only a USB 2.0 sharing port. There are very few informational lights; none of the ports on back have the typical lights to show secure cable snap in. There is a sole LED âstripâ that blinks red on boot/error and turns solid blue on internet connection. There is a sole LED âstripâ that blinks red on boot/error and turns solid blue on internet connection. The good news: Belkin seems to have fixed previous instability problems with the latest version 4 firmware, so older reviews did not have this advantage. I initially failed connecting via password, then got a WPS connection. It may be because it takes a while for the wireless to fully boot. The SSID disappeared once while connecting, but was perfect after that. You log in to http://router and immediately get the Belkin page searching for the internet. Then a firmware check happens. The router tries to give you a lot of help via smart web pages to illustrate what you should do or what to do next. You can easily change an assigned IP to static directly to the âconnected devicesâ page. You can set the router to auto-reboot any day of the week. The GUI is fairly simple and clear. Since there is no user manual, you might need that. The router supports DLNA media serving. There is a Belkin Media Share app or Twonky. I tested a Corsair 128GB flash drive with 2,000 photos and a couple of songs. After refreshing the media page and clicking âSaveâ, it showed right up after 3 minutes of âreindexingâ and rebooting. This might be a great router for families, as firmware includes Norton ConnectSafe Website Filter. There are non-filtered and 3 levels of blocking that can be applied. As far as I can tell, it isnât a subscription. You can also share a printer at the USB port. Just for kicks, I connected the ethernet cable from internet port to my modem-router (router to router), even though the Belkin is factory configured on a different LAN segment (192.168.2.1). Surprisingly, it worked without a hitch even without power cycling the primary router! The performance is OK, not outstanding; the radio isnât particularly strong. It consistently broadcast a signal 3-8 db lower than another plain jane Arris DG960 modem/router. For small home or apartment, it should be adequate. Otherwise youâll need a range extender to keep a good streaming signal. Tomato or dd-wrt firmware is not available at this time.
Bought this Belkin router to improve upon a 9-year old wireless-n router, but it was not better. Had to return it.The Belkin router would not work with my VOIP adapter (a Cisco SPA122). No matter how closely followed VOIP provider's instructions, it never produced dial tone. Original router worked 1st time. Also quite basic interface. Firewall is either off or on, nothing in between. Parental controls allow to bar a device from internet completely, but not to ban specific websites or keywords.Would not accept 64 hex characters as wi-fi password, only passphrase, so I could not copy previous router's SSID & password - would have to assign new password to all devices in the home.Final strange feature: The ports at the rear of the unit lie in a recess which is too ... MoreBought this Belkin router to improve upon a 9-year old wireless-n router, but it was not better. The quality of the connection was poor REGARDLESS of the location of router and distance of device(s).Just pinging the gateway from multiple devices that were next to the router would spike (to over 10seconds in extreme cases), or chunks of ping requests would drop. This was for both 2.4, and 5Ghz channels. The nail in the coffin was when my primary PC's bandwidth deteriorated, which is directly connected to a 1Gbit port on the router via CAT5.e cable, started to deteriorate and could not break 150Mbps down (my pipe is 300Mbps, which the router was capable of giving me). Remove the router from the network, run my pc straight into the modem, 320Mpbs down. Put router in the front of the network again, down still peaking at 150Mbps. Something is defective on the router, wether its heat related I have no idea. It's a small casing, doesnt look well ventilated, and I gave it a go in a few rooms in the house all with the same results.I bought mine at Best Buy and there is a 1yr manufacturer's warranty that Best Buy honors in store, so since I was 2 days out of BB's 15 day return policy I was still able to return it to them for store credit instead of dealing with Belkin.Good Luck!
The old router was only a G so the jump to AC is quite a change. I elected to not reuse the old network name so it took a few reboots of everything to get all the connections back in good order. I also like the 1Gbps LAN for TV connections even though it is massive overkill it keeps those off the WiFi except when casting. The old G router did not have great range so I had put in an N extender, but even that only gave about half the ISP speed over WiFi. I was a bit disappointed the Belkin range seemed no better but it comes through the extender at about 95% of the ISP speed so I won't have to become a CAT6 installer to get decent WiFi through the house.Once in a while some connections get kind of wonky and I find rebooting cable modem, router, and devices sorts that ... MoreThe old router was only a G so the jump to AC is quite a change. Not sure yet why that happens but it is rare enough and simple enough to fix that I'm quite happy with the router. It appears to have plenty of capacity for any growth I can imagine and as a kicker to everything else it was on Clearance at BestBuy for half price. Woo Hoo!! Buy 'em while the still got 'em!!!!!!!

After 5-6 minutes I got a message: âyour modem isnât talkingâ. I followed the on-screen instructions to power cycle the modem and the router would âwatchâ for when the modem was ready to âtalkâ. It then âsawâ that the modem had been power cycled and was waiting for the modem to sync with my ISP. (On a side note, OBVIOUSLY Belkin has gone out of their way to sugar-coat and water-down all of the proper networking terminology so that nearly anyone can setup this router⊠but at times it felt a little childish). Oh now what⊠itâs detected all of the settings of my ISP and IMMEDIATELY went to check for firmware updates. Just kidding, no updates available. Next you get to name your 2.4Ghz network⊠it explains that the 5Ghz network will be the same name with â.mediaâ at the end of the SSID. A few clicks later and weâre finally at the dashboard! Wrap-Up: This router does everything it claims to and does them well. It has fast connection speeds, is SUPER easy to setup, good signal coverage, intuitive parental controls⊠the list goes on and on. I think the current asking price is a bit much, but you get a lot of convenience and safety for the extra you pay.
I wasnât expecting anything fancy with this router and thatâs okay! I got it on sale to use it as an access point to extend my parents WiFi. I have a power line adapter going from the router to their garage and have the other power line adapter hooked up to the router. It actually has an access point setting built into the router so you donât have to worry about changing the settings in order for it to work with your original router. Just set the name and password (if needed) and plug in your Ethernet into one of the four lan ports and youâre up and running! I canât comment on range since the garage has metal walls and doesnât allow WiFi through. But every time I go in my phone connects just fine and works great.
The router was very nice looking and had some interesting software abilities, however, it would not work right from the beginning. Upon unpacking it, I noticed that it had scratched up blotch about quarter size which gives the impression that it was returned and then put back on the floor. It constantly blinked orange rather than the green light that would indicate it running properly. Upon testing the speed of download, my device showed it only pulling 7-10 mbps when my modem alone pulls 110mbps. We had to restart it like ten times a day.
