Best upgrade I've ever done to my home internet

For starters, I have a lot of devices in my home. This is mostly because I decided I wanted to install a smart home starting about five years back, that's only been growing every time I purchase another smart bulb or smart speaker or plug. However, he had not had a chance to try out the more modern mesh style Wi-Fi systems available on the market, so he was kind of using me as his test dummy when I bought this for my house. For starters, I have a lot of devices in my home. This is mostly because I decided I wanted to install a smart home starting about five years back, that's only been growing every time I purchase another smart bulb or smart speaker or plug. I have at least 15 smart bulbs, several smart speakers, and a few other odds and ends in there that also require being on a wi-fi system 24/7. Of course, this doesn't include phones, laptops, and guests who come and hang out on a regular basis and wind up joining our homes' bandwidth usage. Secondly, I was coming from one of those smart tri-band Netgear Nighthawk X6 wifi routers. To be fair, while that system appeared to work fine at first for a short time, it actually has quite a few design flaws. The reason I ended up switching over to this system is because the Nighthawk system continually kicked my devices offline, including security cameras, without any warning, once every two to four days, and the only way to get everything up and running as it was before, was to turn the wi-fi router off and back on, which was not very ideal, considering there would be times we would be away on a camping trip or a vacation, and I would therefore be unable to do this, and even trying to remotely reset the modem through my internet provider would not override this extremely annoying necessity of having to specifically reset the router. My techie friend who encouraged my purchase of this router system, described how his Asus system has the ability for automatic reboots as many times as you want, during any time and day of the week that you desire, which essentially, resets the system quickly and efficiently, which could prevent that unwanted Behavior. He assumed that since his older Asus system had this capability, that this newer Wi-Fi mesh system would also have that capability. Sure enough, when I brought it in and set it up, and I had him take a look at the app with me, it was pretty easy to set up automatic reboots, which I now have set twice a week during a convenient middle of the night hour. Ever since I set this system up when I got it about two and a half months ago, I have not had a singular issue with my devices randomly being kicked offline out of the blue, like I did with my old Netgear Nighthawk system. The nodes work in Perfect Harmony. There are a fairly even amount of devices that I divided / were divided up between the router and the two nodes, so I'm never concerned about too many devices on one band at a time. There are so many things you can do in the app, including more technical things that you would want more technical knowledge on before messing around with, but there are also many customizable yet simple things you can do, like being able to add a guest Network and take it away just as easily with one click of a button, using parental controls, which thankfully I don't need, and even running a speed test on your internet. Sometimes, if there is an issue with your internet, the router and the nodes will light up different colors, but that's no issue! The provided guide actually tells you what colors and patterns the indicator lights are throwing actually mean, so you never have to guess what is actually happening when an issue is occurring. You may start-off placing your nodes in one place, but then decide you want to move them elsewhere, because the signal ends up being better when you place the nodes on the floor, believe it or not. The way that signals work, if you place the node up high, the signal travels upward. So, that goes without saying, when you place the nodes on the floor, the signal has to travel upward, thus, providing more coverage. For example, I started off having my second node on top of the refrigerator, but then found I was better off moving it just outside of the kitchen right on the floor in the corner of the room where it doesn't see any foot traffic, but it's neatly tucked away and provides a much better signal this way. I found that after making those changes, the amount of devices on each unit became far more evened up, after experimenting with where I was placing the nodes. I should also throw out there, that the range that this system puts out is pretty insane. I did a test and was in my car and went around the block but didn't turn the Wi-Fi off on my phone, and I was still getting a little bit of signal from the next street over, so if you have a big yard, that might be pretty useful! if you're still reading this then that's great, but I would honestly just go ahead and buy these. I literally have no complaints, and I'm pretty high maintenance with my Wi-Fi and internet and the amount of devices I use, so what are you waiting for? Just do it.

I've had these for more than six months and they worked great. The routers have great coverage. I love that you can throttle down up to 20 devices and auto reboot the system. I had problems with the firmware updates. The system wouldn't let you know when there is a new update, you have to refresh the update page in the app. The worst part is that a couple of times the firmware didn't install correctly on the access point. It would get stuck in a mode that flashes white and disappears from the app. The hard reset instructions online didn't help. I had to put the router into rescue mode and upload the firmware to fix the issue. It just happened again but this time it's RIP. My PC can't detect the wifi node to the firmware. Glad I got the replacement plan!

Asus announced this 3 pack mini version of their ZenWifi system and I waited a bit till any reviews came out and once they did I felt that the main negatives that were touched on in the reviews I read wouldn't be a big deal for me because I would connect these through an ethernet backhaul. Ah but how naïve I was to think that. So before I get to what I like about this system, let me point out the huge glaring issue this system has: The Wireless service is spotty at best losing connection to the internet several times a day and requiring a reboot. I have done extensive troubleshooting to try and isolate the issue, but at this point if it isn't a firmware issue it must be faulty hardware because no change in settings, or factory reset, or placement, or any other step I've tried to mitigate it has helped resolve this issue. The longest uptime I've had before losing internet connection and rebooting is 7 hours. SEVEN. HOURS. The worst part is even when the wireless network hasn't completely crashed sometimes it'll time out just long enough to make you think it did before finally working again. I've tried isolating the 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands by turning off the Smart Connect feature. I've attempted factory resets, and manually installing the latest firmware. I've tried moving the installation location of the satellite nodes, and I've tried setting the wireless channels to a set channel with low interference but no matter what I do these issues still continue to be an absolute thorn in my side. What I can promise you is that you have these great things to look forward to if you do decide to go with this setup: - Enjoy quality family discussion after your internet goes down causing virtual classroom, zoom, and other services to lose connection multiple times a day. - Having the failings of this mesh wifi system create a divide in your marriage because your significant other can't perform their work without internet. - The charming subdued aesthetics of these useless little squares of white plastic that will eventually be hurled into the garbage to prevent anyone else from dealing with the curse that this system is. If you don't believe me or any of the numerous other reviews and you feel like these issues won't affect YOUR setup then by all means go ahead and try this mesh system out for yourself. In an absolute ideal perfect lab test situation these things might work okay for some time, but even then I have a hard time believing these are capable of maintaining an internet connection and uptime longer than a single day. So for me, I wish I hadn't purchased this system and had instead spent more to get something better, or more reliable. But most importantly I wish these were sold anywhere other than Best Buy so I could have returned them under the standard 30 day return window instead of their joke of a return policy of 15 days without being a club member or whatever. For the things I like about these things, they were easy to setup with the app doing all the work while you wait for it to finish, the only thing that could be improved about the setup would be to have this system be paired together from the factory so that way you won't have to plug them all in the same room during setup and then move them to their final location after completing setup. Another good thing would be the web interface and the amount of settings that can be adjusted for your particular needs. However I believe these still have Firmware that is in BETA even after being updated to the latest Firmware as there are numerous bugs and issues including settings that don't function as they should, and in one case turning on Ethernet backhaul causes the satellite nodes to completely lose connection from the main router and requires a factory reset to be brought back online after another time pairing the 3 cubes again. Please safe yourself from the nightmare of owning this unreliable cash grab of a system, either spend more or wait until the market is more mature with more competitors and time for Assus to perhaps fix whatever issues are preventing this system from being a functional mesh wifi6 system.

Great product, minor niggle

I have 2 of these together with ASUS ZenWiFi XT8 WiFi 6 AX6600 (2 Pack). I used them to set up a mesh wifi in my modern reihenhause (with floor heating), and the behavior is flawless. I was able to integrate it pretty simply into my relatively complicated home network topology. In a modern row-house cover multiple floors is challenging as the wiring and floor heating create a kind of faraday shield b/w the floors -- meaning I get my neighbors wifi signals really strong, but my wifi a few meters below has little to no signal. I do have ethernet ports available on the top floor, ground floor and basement, so I plug the routers into those locations and the middle unit (the mini) is able to use the neighboring router signals sufficiently well. I helped neigbors set up their repeaters and I can confirm that my experience was much better than theirs and I now have completely hidden routers providing fantastic, strong, fast, whole-house wifi. Super nice. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is minor but annoying and easy for Asus to fix: the plug has the very common perpendicular transformer orientation, meaning it blocks other plugs when put in a strip or standard 3 plug socket. Annoying and there's a simple fix -- orient the transformer inline the wide axis of the plug. If they would fix that, it would be a perfect product.

Great value and easy to set up
13 June 2022

I have a 2400 square foot home on a single level with my cable modem at one end, and my in-home office at the other. Traditional modem/router/wifi set up resulted in very low signal strength in the office forcing me to purchase a range extender which was an intermittent and mediocre solution at best. I researched mesh wifi systems and found this system would meet my needs and not cost me a fortune. I was VERY pleased with the packaging. The instructions were simple and easy to follow. Set up was completed in about 15 minutes and it has worked flawlessly. The mobile app provides excellent monitoring and control, and the website app is even more robust. Asus puts out great products and this one did not disappoint. Highly recommended!

Great value!

If you're reading this you are probably needing a good push or reason to buy this. The short and sweet of it is that the Asus ZenWiFi provides great coverage, comes with some nice quality of life features, has newer band technology, and setup is very easy. However, if you are an enthusiast or someone who logs into the router to perform more advanced functions then you may want to do some more homework on this before buying. I purchased this set as we just relocated and moved into a three floor townhouse from a ranch styled home. The location that AT&T was able to setup our router was in our master bedroom closet which was on the third floor. There was no way our smart doorbell would be able to connect to the router from there. Thus began the search for a new router. ... MoreIf you're reading this you are probably needing a good push or reason to buy this. There was no way our smart doorbell would be able to connect to the router from there. Thus began the search for a new router. Asus has always made good products in my opinion. I have never had any issues with anything I have purchased from them and this is no exception. Setting up the routers were easy. Each router needs a power source in order to operate (duh) which is great because you are able to move the routers around until you find your desired coverage. Setup is done via an app or you can log into the interface and complete set up there. The UI works. It can be a bit clunky at times when you are clicking between nodes/access points. There are parental controls that you can setup if you have kids that are easy to set up and manage. One thing I thought was really cool was the eco mode, or whatever it is called. If there isn't any use on one of the nodes it will go into a low power mode until a device is trying to connect to it. What I really like about this system is that there is no performance loss. Throughout the house I am consistently getting the UL/DL speeds that are advertised by my ISP. Even with the 10+ devices going at a time we never see any issues. As mentioned earlier, the one thing I wished I had done was do a little more homework and mainly in what VPNs can be used on the router. This is more my issue than Asus. If this matters to you then look into it before you buy. Overall it's a great router and looks great. No regrets on this purchase.

Great; Bit of a trick to set up with AiMesh
20 August 2021

I bought this three pack to add new APs to an existing ASUS AiMesh system. Getting them to connect and play nice with the network was a little bit difficult, but here is what I found that works: First, connect the primary unit (the one with both LAN and WAN ports) and attach it to the existing router with an ethernet cable via the WAN port on the back of the primary unit. Power on the unit and make sure it is in setup mode (use the reset button on the bottom or do it on the first boot). At this point you should be able to connect it to your existing router with AiMesh (you might need the latest ASUS router firmware). Power on the unit and make sure it is in setup mode (use the reset button on the bottom or do it on the first boot). At this point you should be able to connect it to your existing router with AiMesh (you might need the latest ASUS router firmware). Once your primary unit is attached to the AiMesh network, it will be your connection point for the two satellite units. These units will need to be attached to the primary unit with an ethernet cable that connects LAN ports on both units. When the satellite unit is in setup mode (again, use the reset button if needed), the AiMesh setup utility will detect the unit and add it to the network. You'll see that the AiMesh shows the daisychain connection in the network map. The satellite units will not connect to the AiMesh network on their own if connected directly to your existing router. They must first connect through the primary unit they came with as a box. Now that the satellite unit is detected and connected to the AiMesh network, you can power it down and connect it directly to the existing router (not the primary unit that comes in this package). Your existing router is running the AiMesh network and will recognize the satellite unit and connect even though it is no longer daisy chained through the primary unit. Repeat the process for the other satellite and you will have a great 4-point mesh network. Note that I didn't try to connect through wireless haulback for this process - only ethernet connections. YMMV for how this would work with a wireless mesh. These little guys work great as access points! Happy with the speed. I recently had a FaceTime call that moved through my whole house and I no longer have deadzones like before. Highly recommend.

As Google was trashing their WiFi system by moving it into the Home app, I decided to get a new WiFi system. So I purchased this one as it has WiFi 6 and ASUS is typically a brand that I trust. However after this purchase that trust has eroded a bit. I am 6 months or so into ownership and about 2 weeks in I had multiple iPhones start reporting that they had not been backed up in 2 weeks. Upon going into the backup settings I can see a message stating “Backup could not be completed due to network problems”. Wow! I had never seen this message in my 8 years of iPhone ownership. I never got that message when using Google. I also noticed from time to time that devices such as my AppleTV (which also doubles as HomeKit hub) would randomly go offline. Again, never had these messages when I was using Google WiFi. I have reset the entire network 3 times now thinking that maybe my tinkering with this system caused this issue. 2nd time all I did was to turn Ethernet Backhaul on and Tweak one of the WiFi settings… after this 3rd time all I did was to turn on the Ethernet Backhaul and the errors are still occurring. The funny thing is that when you don’t have Ethernet Backhaul on, if you press the “Optimize Network” button it informs you that “you are using a wired connection. Optimization is only for wireless connections.” Despite the Ethernet Backhaul being set to OFF.

Spotty Connection & Abysmal Support
20 March 2023

I’d give this 1/5, but I still have somewhat of a connection to my devices. The Best Buy worker (now a manager) recommended this router over the Netgear Nighthawk & eero. Came across as “You’re dumb if you don’t get this one.” So I caved… Set up was easy but the performance of the router was TERRIBLE. I had all 3 nodes (or whatever they’re called) set up in my 2-story townhome. Connection would drop sporadically on my smart tv, smartphones, PS4, laptops, and desktops. Even upgrading to WiFi 6 devices over my time of having this ASUS device didn’t help (like PS5). Contacted ISP & there weren’t any issues on their end. Contacted ASUS support and they were SLOW to respond & UNHELPFUL to the problem. They couldn’t figure out the issue & nothing was ever resolved. The only thing that helped was ditching one of the 3 nodes. Connection dips in and out, but not as frequent. And I went into the router settings to tether each stationary device to a specific node. Why not stick with 1 node? I prefer having some devices, like my PS5 and desktop, over a wired connection… and that’s why I paid for 3 nodes. I’m never buying another ASUS product again. And I’m taking Best Buy’s recommendations with a grain of salt. At least from my local store.

Was Skeptical, but glad I purchased
28 October 2022

Ever since needing a wireless home network, I've used a separate Modem and Router instead of leasing combo units from internet providers. I have always been a fan of Netgear and the Nighthawk products. I recently had to have a new line ran to my house due to my others being compromised. I also upgraded my speeds and was told I needed to upgrade my network to take full advantage. I was looking online, reading reviews about routers. When the Mesh systems came out years ago, I was skeptical, seeing people having problems. After speaking with a Best Buy Rep, he suggested these. I decided to try them. My house is 1400sq ft and these 3 mesh units are nice and compact, unlike my old night hawk. I now have full 5G coverage in and outside around my home. Very pleased. The app is pretty simple to navigate and make changes or to just view and rename what devices are connected to which hub. I would recommend these to anyone.
