After so much research and deliberation, I couldn’t be happier with my new Ascaso Steel Duo PID. Ticks all the boxes and more - The Thermoblock means it’s heated up and ready to go in minutes when I get up in the morning ; adjustable OPV and pre-infusion settings have been great to play around with and easy to adjust. Despite coming with a range of baskets they’re all on the small side (14gm’s the biggest & Included tamper also seems a couple of mm too small for the included basket, easy to upgrade. I initially had trouble with the volumetric timer, which sets itself when you hold the coffee switch down, a small annoyance, but after a few days got used to this feature. The service and communication from Alternative Brewing was amazing - highly recommend!

Ascaso’s Steel Duo was a big upgrade from a much loved and much used Bambino. After getting used to a thermoblock machine it was hard to consider any other heating technology so the field narrowed to Ascaso’s lineup fast. They make incredibly beautiful machines and the Steel Duo is no exception. What surprised me was the immediate difference in the quality of espresso - both with the pressurized portafilter and with the regular portafilter. Once I dialed in the grind and programmed the extraction switch my workflow got way faster too. This thing is seriously easy to use. I can now make two drinks in the time it used to take to make one. Not only are my drinks out faster, but thanks to the cup warmer they are also hotter. A shoutout to the team at idrinkcoffee for their presales support. They talked me through the pros and cons of the machine, made sure I had the right electrical wiring and sockets to support it and were even willing to hold on it for a few weeks till I was ready to receive it. I would not hesitate to buy here again.

Solid machine that rocks. Upgraded from a souped-up early-2000s Gaggia Classic and this thing blows it away. Great steam, programmable, pre-infusion, fast heat up, dual thermoblocks, shot timer, PID, active cup warmer on top, and quiet! Just a nice user experience all the way around. My only nitpick would be that you need a 20 Amp circuit available. Most new houses might have that in a kitchen, but my old house didn't and I had to make some adjustments.

I purchased the Ascaso Steel Duo after many years of using a Breville Barista Express. The Ascaso provides a much more polished user experience with its 58mm portafilter, PID, easy side-filling water tank, among other features.Aesthetically, it is one of the most beautiful looking machines, especially if you're looking for a more contemporary, less "stainless mirror reflection and fingerprint nightmare, giant, counter hogging" traditional beasts. The black finish, with wood-handled portafilter is simply stunning. The reasonable dimensions allow the machine to fit on my very small cart, which was all the space I was willing to devote to my coffee setup. Thus far, from a taste perspective, the Ascaso produces a much smoother, rounder, more nuanced cup compared to the Breville. I am using a Eureka Mignon Facile with it, but was also using the grinder with the Breville, so it's a fair comparison between the two units. The Ascaso's steam performance is easily double the power and speed of the Breville, and the no-burn steam wand makes cleaning it far easier. The start up time is insanely quick, compared to most machines. In 5 minutes, you have a completely hot machine with a portafilter that's hot to the touch. It makes that spontaneous coffee experience much easier than having to plan for 30 minute warm-ups.The drip tray is plastic, but glides easily out of the machine, and is also easy to clean. Similarily, the water tank slides out making it easier to place under counters for most people. The adjustable OPV is accessed conveniently outside of the machine, using a flat head screwdriver. I did have to adjust it down a little from the factory setting, where it was producing 11 plus bar shots. The only gripe I have with it is that it makes a little bit of a chirping noise while in use, which I've read is an issue others are having. Hasn't affected the use in any way.Basically, if the unit is reliable long-term, this machine does everything you could want in a double "boiler" in a convenient and beautiful form factor.
I bought this unit thinking that I would finally be able to produce latte art and and great espresso. I have had it for three month and spent ALOT of time, coffee and milk, soap, and food coloring etc practicing and trying to create the micorfoam required to do it. I'm starting to accept the fact that it is not going to happen. Here are the reasons. While the thermoblock does heat up to brew or steam temperature relatively quickly the problem comes in switching between the two. From brew to steam, purge and steam milk to 60 deg C takes over 2.5 minutes. This is how long your shot will be sitting. Things are changing on the surface of the crema and not for the best. Second, it takes probably twice as long to bring milk from 4 to 60 C as many high end machines ... MoreI bought this unit thinking that I would finally be able to produce latte art and and great espresso. Second, it takes probably twice as long to bring milk from 4 to 60 C as many high end machines resulting in extra air getting incorporated. It's just too slow of a process to get the correct microfoam that will remain on the surface from which to make the art. Even with the pitcher spout 1/4" from the surface and poured slowly the milk just dives under and disappears.Trying the process in reverse by steaming and then brewing requires at least a single and a double flush of the water through the group to cool the thermoblock from 165 back to 95 for brewing. If you just wait it's over five minutes. So now your milk has been sitting and separating for at least a minute before you can get it into your shot. Bottom line if you really want latte art you're going to need a double boiler and lots of steam power. Otherwise this will make great espresso and is very adjustable with OPV and temps and pre-infusion etc. Lots of fun to play with just don't expect cafe quality microfoam with which to work. And YES I watched a TON of Youtube videos on how to do this. It simply does not work on this machine.
Had this beautiful machine for about a month. So far it has been a great experience. Let's start with the positive aspects; very well made built with high quality parts, looks amazing modern look with a feel of classic touch, heats up super fast with minimal wait time, adjustable PID for perfect pressure control and its easy to access, has different programs such as pre infusion, heat temperature, turn on/off function, turn on/off steam wand, drip tray holds more than enough liquid, portafilter is of great quality as well as the basket it comes with, height between drip tray and portafilter is in perfect range. Negative aspects; steam power not the best, 20v plug and yes it comes with an adapter however it will stick out and was a little annoying having to find out ... MoreHad this beautiful machine for about a month. Absolutely outstanding quality and value. I received the black color model three days ago. And absolutely love the quietness, solid quality of all its parts, accurate temperature control, pressure, temperature of water coming out of the water spout and excellent steam pressure. The tank is easy to fill and the hoses inside the tank have screen filters to keep the water supply clean. Standby mode, timer, programming shots, all quick operations easy to learn on the spot. Water tray has good capacity and I love the 'maze' design in the tray to prevent the water from splattering as one carries the tray to the sink to empty it. Startup was a bit tricky when after 3 brewing sessions I ran into a problem related to water coming out from both the coffee headgroup and water ... MoreAbsolutely outstanding quality and value. Startup was a bit tricky when after 3 brewing sessions I ran into a problem related to water coming out from both the coffee headgroup and water dispensing spout simultaneously. Quickly and easily corrected (even contacted Ascaso support and received a very fast response. Very nice to see they stand by their product). Overall, I am very satisfied with the machine. It's straightforward simple, solid, brews beautiful espresso and has great steam pressure. Recommend 100%
I took a lot of time and consideration in purchasing my first Espresso machine. Ascaso won for two important reasons. First - the way it looks. Most machines have the appearance they fell off a rocket ship. This was polished... refined. Second - the features. Most PID, dual boiler (thermacoil in this case) machines were priced well into the $2000's. This was priced below. Some technical learning curves aside, the machine has performed better than expected. It's held up to 3 shots a day at a minimum with no issues. I will say (as Im sure its true with most espresso machines) make sure you're looking at a quality grinder. The Vario was not a great partner.
Fantastic machine that delivers on all the sought-after features of PID, pre-infusion, shot-timer, powerful steam, super-quick heat-up times (ready to make espresso in two minutes), dedicated hot water spout, pressure dial, a large and easily accessible drip tray and easily adjustable OPV and, to my eyes, a beautiful design with great retro switches. The advertised feature of volumetric dosing is a total waste of time as the shot output varied every time, but there is an easy workaround of just easily setting a high dose (e.g. 50 seconds - way higher than you'll ever need), and then just manually pulling a shot of 25-30s every time. Easy-peasy. I rushed into a Gaggia Classic Pro without reading about the workarounds, pitfalls and mods (thanks Altrernative Brewing ... MoreFantastic machine that delivers on all the sought-after features of PID, pre-infusion, shot-timer, powerful steam, super-quick heat-up times (ready to make espresso in two minutes), dedicated hot water spout, pressure dial, a large and easily accessible drip tray and easily adjustable OPV and, to my eyes, a beautiful design with great retro switches. Now, based on the feature-set, in particular the fast heat-up time and the price, I'm super-happy I settled on this fantastic machine. Definitely recommend this one.
The one unique feature that this machine has that puts it head and shoulders ahead of its class is the THERMOBLOCK. This means you can turn the machine on, and within minutes, the machine is warmed up. Most other boilers dont give you that. In this price range, realisically the best bet is this machine, or the breville dual boiler (not quite as quick to warm up, not as pretty, but has other handy features). Externally adjustable OPV is great, the pressure comes on with a nice steady ramp up, and you can have up to 5 seconds of pre-infusion. PID control, good drip tray, and active cup warmer are all great.Keep in mind there is no milk pitcher included, the basket is a bit smallish but easily upgraded, and the included tamper is not ideal either.
