Especially, in industries where PCI and SOC and HIPPA mandate all data be accounted for and maintained encrypted, this is a good way to accomplish this, as long as you have a good inventory system and way to secure daily then rechecked out every time needed.

This HD was sooo quiet and had no detectable vibration (just an LED) when I first plugged it in--thought it was DOA, but it was running and transferring so well. The Aegis Padlock is very easy to set up and use. A quick and simple process allows the user to reset the default PIN/code (i.e., 123456) with a 6-digit PIN of one's choosing. After that was done, the device has been performing flawlessly for me. It starts up quickly and data transfer is very fast.

The product did everything I thought it would do, it is passcode protected, allowed access to secured files, and an excellent drive for files/data.
For secure storage that is simple to use these drives are the best we use. You can set up multiple passwords on the device (keep one as an admin in case the user loses theirs). The unlock method is so easy any user can do it. So far we haven't had any of them fail after several years of use, which is better reliability than our encrypted flash like Ironkey or Gold Key. The only downside is that if you don't set a secondary password there is no way to recover the device if the user forgets their password.
I bought 2 of these to supplement 2 that I already have that I use as my off-site/contigency backup solution. I love the form-factor, the OS-agnostic ability, so that in a worst case scenario, like my house burns down with all my computers and servers, that I or a designee can go to an off-site location, grab these backups, and plug into any computer, and have access to everything. My other two were bought in 2007, and 2010 - and they are still going strong! So I have high hopes these will last just as long. But because they are pricing, be sure to buy "big" and not find yourself needing a bigger or 2nd one too soon. I think I've done good 11-14 years later... Glad they still sell these!
On this model if you press the cancel button it will go into standby (red LED) and the drive will spin down. On the older version the cancel button does nothing and you have to pull the USB cable while the disk is still spinning. This is also better than the GODO (SYBA) because the unattended auto time lock is disabled, allowing applications to work with files on the drive directly. The GODO slides all over the table because it does not have rubber feet like the Padlock.
These are the best drives, for what they do. I work in industrial control systems security, and these are my go to drives. The speeds are great, for a spinning disk. But lots of drives do that, what I really like is build quality and the way the buttons work. This is all physical, so unlike other devices, no LCDs to break. The hard rubber case takes a beating and I never worry about it in the plant or in my bag traveling across the country. This also boots quite nicely and unlike software encrypted drives, it is usable as a source for backups when booting with backup/image software. I've used it on systems from Windows 2000 to embedded xp to server 2012 with no issues. It simply just works each and every time.

The first step is to deny access to the drive until the drive can verify the user PIN. After several incorrect attempts the drive will lock itself, requiring the drive to be plugged in again to input a PIN. This feature blocks automated attempts to enter PIN numbers. Lastly, after a predetermined number of failed PIN entries, the Padlock assumes it is being attacked and will destroy the encryption key and lock itself, rendering the data useless and requiring a total reset to redeploy the Padlock• Protection against hacker attempts doesn’t stop with Brute Force. Incorporated into the Aegis Padlock’s electronics is Apricorn’s Variable Time Circuit (VTC) technology, working to thwart “timing attacks” aimed at accessing the drive by studying the behavior and infiltrating the Padlock’s electronics
Worked exceptionally well - read the instructions, plugged it into my Mac, changes the master password and it works like a dream. Only reason for not giving 5 stars is that the carry bag is a touch too small to accommodate the extension USB-3 cable that comes with the disk.
