The first sign when I began using it was that it wouldn't spray after vigorously shaking it for 3 minutes. I had high hopes that this 3M adhesive would be able to bond a 6" x 8" 3/4" piece of plywood to a similar sized piece of plastic stair tread. I have been using this adhesive for over a decade and I can tell you that it works hand down. All the bad reviews are from people not knowing how to prep the surface or how to use the product. The ONLY solvent that should be used to prep the surface is alcohol (100%), not Brake Kleen et al. They leave a residue behind and that residue most times will break down the adhesive not allowing it to stick.This adhesive is a contact cement and by design it will stick to itself. It will only do this when it is no longer wet but it is still sticky. Once it has lost it's sticky it's not going to work well if at all. Headliner material is tricky to work with because of the foam backing. The trick is a little adhesive goes a long way. Very very very light amount as it will soak right through. This is the same really for most fabrics. DO NOT apply a lot of pressure when working with headliner material ad you will brush the foam and indents will be visible in the headliner.The spray does not come out as a liquid or a mist. It comes out of the can like a spider web or "silly string". This is how it is supposed to come out of the can to provide the most amount of coverage. The closer the nozzle is to the surface the more liquid it will be. I find that 2.5 feet to 3.0 feet away from the surface to be sprayed is ideal in most use cases.When working with metals making the surface rough is not as important as making sure there are no oils on the metal. Most metals are coated with oil to prevent them from rusting. If applying over chrome it is recommended to hit the surface with some steel wool. This is because most chromes have some kind of a surface coating on them like wax that MUST be removed. Alcohol breaks down oil so use a liberal amount, wipe the piece down 3-4 times and then let dry for at least 30 minutes before spraying.Ventilation ventilation ventilation, I cannot stress that enough. A vapor mask is not enough if used in an area that is not well ventilated The VOC's will bother your eyes.Do yourself a HUGE favor and always put down wax paper under the item you are spraying. As another review states this stuff is almost impossible to get off. Goo Gone does work but requires mechanical help in the form of scrubbing to get it off. So if you value something don't spray near it. Tape off areas with blue painters tape and plastic if needed.This adhesive is no joke when used properly. you have exactly one time to stick things together so plan ahead and get it right the first time. When working with vinyl put a super light coat on and do a "test" wrap to get some practice with the stretching. Once you know how it needs to be done then use new vinyl and spray for a final attachment.Remember this is a contact cement so both pieces need to be sprayed and both pieces need to dry so they aren't wet but they are still tacky. Depending on temperature and humidity that can be anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes. you might have another 5 minutes until the adhesive is fully dried and will no longer adhere properly. So not a long amount of "working" time.The final results are only going to be as good as the prep that is done and the time taken to adhere the 2 pieces together.

I have purchased this at least one other time and found it to have an impressive bond strength which *had* a great nozzle, dispensing the solution in a "spaghetti pattern" like pattern. Unfortunately, something seemed to have changed in the 3M production of this product as the nozzle no longer sprays in that spaghetti pattern. Perhaps that's because it can't be inserted into the can properly. Dispensing is a mess, as it seeps out from under the nozzle while some of the solution is through the two orifices.

Works great! If you follow the instructions. Its pretty easy spray both sides.. wait 2min put them together and under pressure for a few min.. I saw some other reviews IDK what the problem is... IT'S LITERALLY WRITTEN ON THE CAN TITLED "DIRECTIONS" used this for carpet in my van and several other projects its very good. Beware though its VERY sticky wear gloves or do not get any on you. This stuff is hard to get rid of or clean off. I would like 3m to post what they recommend to remove it.( aka overspray or an oops)
I needed an adhesive that I could use to lay down a 6 foot vinyl cord cover to a concrete basement floor so I wouldn't trip over the electric cord. Any adhesive would stick to the vinyl cover OK but not to the concrete. Tape didn't work, contact cement just peeled off like a scab but this worked perfect. To start with I cleaned the strip of concrete with Easy Off Oven Cleaner then neutralized the strip with cleaning vinegar. After that I used a very weak solution of Baking soda and later some soap and water. I let it dry overnight. Then I taped off the concrete area that matched the 3" cord cover and sprayed it and the bottom of the cord cover with the 3M 90 spray and let it dry for about an hour. I then laid down some scrap paper over the dried adhesive and slowly ... Incredible! Do you spray both surfaces? What should you use to clean/prep the surfaces? Is the "silly string" spray deliberate? I suspect so, yet 3M's own responses to reviews complaining about it say "we don't expect the product to perform like this": is that true, or do the responses just reflect the use of standard phraseology by staff who don't know what they're talking about? Get a grip of your website, 3M; it's a disgrace. Other obvious yet unanswered questions: - how do you clean up overspray? Are there temperature limitations on when you should use it? Do you ... Once tacky( about 60 seconds), ensure fitting/placement is perfect. This stuff sets fast. I used it on marine foam decking for my boat. So far no issues.
I regret buying this product. I used this contact adhesive to glue tarp material to the bottom of my rv slide out. I followed the instructions and got it looking pretty good with no air bubbles. I let it sit over night and the next day the material was peeling off in a light breeze. It sat in the sun for a few hours which probably loosened up the adhesive but the can clearly reads "Moisture and Heat Resistant". I was going to grab the red can that was sitting right next to this but i decided to go with the tried and true 3M because everyone knows they make great reliable products. Unfortunately their Hi-strength 90 contact adhesive does'nt come close to the quality I've come to expect. Now that I've wasted 20 dollars and an hour of my time I will have to peel the ... Anyway I found something new out on my own. I twisted the slot horizontal, which was counter intuitive for the left-to-right-down-right-to-left zig-zag movement pattern I was going to make with my arms. It was just a try on my part, a curiosity. I got a very satisfactory result, and had that been my original experience I would have never authored this observation about the new spray tip. I presume, but haven't tried, that if I turned the slot vertical that spraying up-down-down-up would go better (again counter intuitive). I change the review ... I change the review from 2 to 4,holding back on the 5th star because 3M could have explained better on the can, or packed the can in a retail box with instructions, or created a YouTube example and pointed to that on the can for the sake of brevity. To leave the customers to find out by means of serendipity how to work with the new tip was asking a lot IMHO. Even now it's not too late for them to instruct the public with what they had in mind instead of waiting for the public to guess what design engineers had in mind. My 2 ¢ ORIGINAL REVIEW: The most recent can I received had a new kind of spray tip. Instead of the typical aerosol spray head (a small round orifice) this had a t-shaped protrusion out of the nozzle that had a slot in it, and you could turn this slot to be horizontal or vertical (see pictures). It's a terrible implementation! The old spray head would put out a thin, consistent, and predictable cone of spray. In short you just had to be careful not to spray beyond the bounds of what you were applying it to The amount was very thin, minimalist, but very effective and drying quickly. This new head didn't spray reliably in horizontal or vertical positions and movements of my arm back and forth or nearer/further did not help control it. What came out of the T-nozzle instead of being a thin predictable coating was something that looked more like it was trying to create that silly string spray kids play with. I ended up with voids in areas I would have formerly covered reliably/predictably, and other areas where it was piling on and up three-dimensionally with too much adhesive. 3M sounds like they're going to credit me, and while that fixes my wallet it doesn't fix their product. Between the two fixes I wish they'd fix the product. This new nozzle might clean at the flick of a fingernail, but I managed to keep the other spray head clean, and with that former head I could get the adhesive applied perfectly, now I don't have that, or a solution for it.
