A rough nib! The backstory: two years ago I bought a Platinum pen, the nib was misaligned out of the box. Jet accepted the return, thank you, and verified the misaligned nib.Two years later I bought another Platinum pen,I liked the look of it and thought my first experience was a one off, big mistake! The new pen’s nib is rough, not a Comfortable writing experience.I talked to my Pen friends about the rough nib: “write, it will smooth out”.. why should “I break in a pen”? - ? It’s not a pen worth the effort. All my Pilot pen’s are good out of the box! and get better as I use!I don’t understand why Jet Pens puffs up the Platinum pen’s??? ... ? This is a smooth and pleasant writer, but it has a touch of feedback (unlike the Pilot Custom 74 which is super-smooth and feels like writing air). You might prefer this feedback if you want some feedback or better control over the pen when writing. This pen accepts the Platinum Fountain Pen Converter which I like very much because it has always filled up close to the top for me on the very first try. The color is stunning in bright lighting conditions although it looks almost black in dim lighting. At this price point, it's a tough call between this pen, the Lamy 2000, and Pilot Custom 74 which are also extremely great pens. So I recommend trying out all three if you can. I own all three, and I like them equally well for different reasons.

With egg on my face, I am posting this updated review. Because, I believe, if you make a mistake - you must remedy it.In my previous review, I unfairly maligned the Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen. It is a fine pen, and performs extremely well, for its price! No one’s “twisting my arm” to write this, either. What happened, is that I did not understand how to properly install the proprietary ink cartridge for this pen. It is *very* important to install the cartridge in the pen, by holding the pen *at an angle*, with the nib pointing up - *exactly* as indicated in the diagram included in the pen instruction manual! If you fail to do this, the cartridge will not have a proper seal with the nib and the nib will leak. This is what happened which caused me to ... Plus, it’s not a fussy, “high maintenance” pen, either. It is one of those fountain pens that is easy to carry, is expensive enough to the point where the nib is good quality and once you get to writing with it, is hardly ever scratchy and doesn’t skip (except when the cartridge needs to be replaced). Please disregard my previous negative review of the Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen. The Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen with medium nib is a fine “Intermediate” level fountain pen: It offers great performance at a relatively low price. I would definitely recommend it - especially if you are looking for a moderately priced “luxury kind of pen” with both luxurious looks and solid performance.

Pen has gold nib, that is UEF, so it is really fine, needlepoint. It writes with little bit feedback, but not scratchy at all. Nib is stiff, no flex. Flow is really great, it keeps up well. Literary writes with no-pressure at all. I was pleasantly surpirised that this pen was bigger than I was expecting. I have small hands, but this pen is really great to hold. It is pretty light. Material is really interesting, it doesn't feel slipery nor cheap. Really great pen for this price and this UEF nib is really good for writing math or drawing, if you want something that produces fine line.
...if it worked properly. I cannot speak of this model in general, I know that technically this is a good pen and many love it. But the one I got just would not write at all out of the box. Had I bought it at a local shop I would have returned it immediately. But returning it to Japan seemed like too much of a hassle to me, so I have been trying to fix it mself. It took me quite some time to tune the nib and feed to get the ink to flow. Bit still, the tines are misaligned and I hardly manage to align them properly, the nib size being an EF and the material gold. It is still quite scratchy because the tines are still not fully aligned. If I don't manage, I will end up not using it at all. This has not happened to me yet with cheaper Platinum pens. I have a Platinum Preppy 0.2 (also corresponding to EF), which writes like a dream. So does the Platinum carbon desk pen 0.2 I got today. How can it be that QC of a 3 pen is better than of a 80 pen? I am very disappointed with this purchase.
This pen is truly gorgeous. Better than the pictures but writing with it, that is a glorious experience. I took a chance on the F nib (I tend to write w/ a M in general). The risk paid off. It's razor sharp and precise but is smooth and sails across the page. Currently inked with Sailor Manyo Kuzu and they are a perfect pairing. Everything about this pen brings me joy.
Superbly made and beautiful nib. The medium nib is smooth, some feedback but not scratchiness. At the price point that you get from ordering directly from Japan, it is an excellent buy compared to many companies who will only give you a stainless nib. The gold adds to the luster of the nib and its value and that's why it costs so much to upgrade to a gold nib (14, 18, 21k). Both stainless and gold nibs are tipped with iridium or similar very hard metals for writing so really the gold nibs that Japanese fountain pens offer are very price competitive with offerings from Europe. The Europeans only offer 14, and 18k nibs and charge you a premium. So anyone who says that it is not important whether the nib is stainless or gold is being disingenuous.
Before placing the review it is crucial for the future readers to know about my background using fountain pens so the words will stay in perspective. During my university studies (many years ago) i was using MB149 Mnib which I have chosen as a gift - means I had the opportunity to chose any pen i want from the selection of the shop (Waterman, MB, Sheaffer or Elysee) after ending my many years at the university I have stored the pen and never came back to it till recently (about 7 years ago when during my job I have met OMAS vice president when it was belong to LHVM) and the hobby starts again....Since then I wrote with Marlen ("7 kings", "Zeus", "HTF geneve", Montegrappa "snake" and "extrem 1930", "DV" by Delta so basically Italian brands. and since then I am more ... I will probably will find the time to try the pilot and the sailor. I was surprised to open the box and to see beautiful pen (much nicer in reality than photos) nib is basic even when you say 14K but hey I am used to pens 10-20 times more expensive. I start to write immediately and after few minutes put it back to its box! after 3 days I have said to myself it is not fair...I should at least try to enjoy it and you know what; I love it! worth any money and more than that i have started to think over my collection saying to myself who really needs all those expensive pens when someone can enjoy the #3776 for about 100USD. I will definitely will go on the future on the Pilot 823 and later on the 1911L.
Very high quality pen that writes really well. The soft-fine nib gives a lot of feedback, but after a few days you get used to that. The line variation this nib is capable of is great. The platinum cartridge it came with is filled with a low saturation ink. A highly saturated ink will do better for such a fine nib, so that is what I will try next. Please note that the pen is quite short: I write unposted with a Lamy safari, but the 3776 needs posting. The only other drawback to the pen is that the resin is a fingerprint magnet. Nevertheless, I'm very happy with the pen.
