Seagate is my go-to brand for hard drives. They are reliable, fast and inexpensive to get in very large capacities. I was surprised that this 500 GB drive is a great deal thinner and lighter than the 80 GB it replaces. I also love that it comes with NO software loaded, so I can load what I want, rather than having to deal with all the garbage that comes in "LOADED" computers. This lack of useless software is helping me keep this drive mostly empty and running fast. I am sure that my gaming and record keeping will fill the drive up fast enough. I don't need the stuff that wouldn't sell at all if it wasn't pre-installed taking up space.

Bought as 2nd drive to supplement SATA SSD boot drive, for older PC that came with no drives. Unit came with "Certified Repaired" label - and I have no reason to think that's not so. No issues installing, formatting. CrystalMark speed test results are what I expected. Good value for what it is - as long as it holds up. Installed it only last month.

I was replacing an old HHD with this after the previous drive failed. At first I thought a virus had effected my system, as icons started to dissappear, and some programs were taking lengthy times to load. After a reformat and fresh install, I realized it was the drive as I heard it clicking after install and hit a disk read error on one of my boots. Ordered this part and swapped it out for the old HHD. Didn't change anything else. First boot up gave me an error. Changed boot priority. Error went away. Partitioned the drive into 2 drives. After first install, windows did not recognize the second part. Figured I would do it manually later, and installed my drivers (which I had ready to go on flash drive from previous install). The system doesnt recognize my flash drive on reboot, and I have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to be read. Not a huge deal, but annoying when installing drivers. Installing mobo drivers caused the system to continually reset on boot. I get the load windows in last known good configuration screen, but loading in safe mode or any other mode causes the system to reset. I figured that I must have done something wrong along the way. Reinstall. Very careful about installing everything correctly. Again, load up every other driver just fine. Load up mobo drivers and I'm back in the reset cycle again. I install a 3rd time. Manually install all hardware drivers one at a time. Seems to be working now, but it was a much larger headache than I've ever had installing a new HHD before. At this point, I am considering that it's possibly my mobo that is giving me issues, and not the drive itself. However, despite being a 5 year old system, most of that time this system has been sitting in a closet, and I didn't have any of these issues before I replaced the drive. I would have given 3 eggs, but with the mobo in mind, I decided to split the difference.

Overall I love these cheap hard drives. They're a good amount of storage and perfect for selling computers. Though the amount of use and abuse on each is different so some are better than others. Some can be really quite slow and bottleneck the system a bit running at 100% for awhile after boot up in task manager. Others don't have the same issue. I'd say it's 50/50 and I've bought about 5 of these from the same seller. Pros: - the GB per dollar is amazing and cannot be beat - Seagate name brand - Standard SATA interface - Almost constantly available at the same great price from this seller Cons: - Kinda a lottery some are good some are less good - A few of mine had dings and scratches to the label Ain't the fastest, but gets the job done for cheap Highly Recommended
I got this when I was just starting my current build more or less as a placeholder until I had some money saved up to get my upgrade components. I had purchased a Seagate Pipeline HD which worked very well (and still does to this day). This drive saw very little use outside of a go-between to hold data temporarily whenever I needed to transfer large amounts of data from one drive to another. When I finally got the money to start swapping components for my new build, I wanted to use this drive to hold on to some data that I would be transferring to my EVO 970 Plus. I started the copy and left for work, only to come home to see that the transfer had failed after just a few gigs. Trying again it failed about five minutes later and a Windows notification popped saying ... MoreI got this when I was just starting my current build more or less as a placeholder until I had some money saved up to get my upgrade components. When I finally got the money to start swapping components for my new build, I wanted to use this drive to hold on to some data that I would be transferring to my EVO 970 Plus. I started the copy and left for work, only to come home to see that the transfer had failed after just a few gigs. Trying again it failed about five minutes later and a Windows notification popped saying that Windows was configuring new hardware. This would repeat on and off frequently until Windows would finally just say there was an error reading the drive and stop. The frequency of this occurring made me think I had a shot SATA cable on my hands, so I switched it for another one. Same problem. Switching these same cables to my old Hitatchi 1TB proved that assumption incorrect as they worked fine with it (I am actually using both these cables for that same Hitatchi and the Pipeline in fact). I cleaned the contacts on the drive, but this didn't help. At this point, I'm not sure what the issue could be, but I assume the PCB since it doesn't seem to have any issues actually reading or writing as it still does so at normal rates, it just can't solidly connect. Regardless of the cause; this shouldn't be happening in such a short time frame. Thankfully I didn't lose any data because of this, but this is unacceptable.
I know the guys at B and H use this stuff and know about it, but in this case I didn't listen and just focused on the price. The guy that helped me on this order told me these drives were junk and I should get a different brand. How I wish I has just said oh ok and paid the extra 100 for a better drive. Seagate is the worst. First the drive didn't even pretend to work. It never mounted and never showed in the utility. It was a dud from the start. So knowing the return policy I had to deal with Seagate to see if I could get money back or a replacement. They are putting me through the ringer. I can't put it in my Drobo or my internal drive dock I must put it in the Data port of a computer and send them a screen shot of the system dialog to prove its a piece of junk. ... MoreI know the guys at B and H use this stuff and know about it, but in this case I didn't listen and just focused on the price. So now I have to dig out my old Mac Pro Tower and set that up just to make sure I can get my money or a new drive. Frankly I don't want a new drive I just want the 300 they stole and I say stole because they know these drives are worthless but sold it to me because they could hopefully tire me out with the return process. Next time I'm just going to follow the advice of the B and H people.
If you are really strapped for cash and you simply must have an older style mechanical hard drive for your old klunky PC then this might be a worthy choice BUT... Unless you're just trying to get your 63 year old aunt Martha's e-machine up and running again why not consider saving a few bucks and getting yourself a reliable SSD for twice the price but half the storage and seriously faster speed? If you need storage there are numerous cheap external drives for you to store your archives on. These drives are over priced for what they are and they should be selling for 20 bucks apiece before the rest of the PC users wake up and realize they're not really a good deal. This is clearly a buyer beware scenario. This is clearly a buyer beware scenario. I purchased two of these for an old raid array my six year old uses (she experiments a lot so RAID 1 is a handy thing for her) but that was my own foolhardy choice. Western Digital is putting out 500 GB SSDs out for 150 bucks apiece. Something with half as much storage would easily suffice in most domestic situations. Another way of looking at this is looking at the price of a brand new 1 TB external hard drive. What I paid for two refurbished 500 GB drives could have brought me a brand new 1TB external hard drive. So even though two of these are inexpensive that does not mean that they're really cost effective.
I keep my reviews very simple. It's been nearly three years since I purchased it (January 2012 was the purchase date, the date of this review is October 2014). In that time, I've used my computer every single day for often more than 8 hour days with little to no interruptions. I'm a hardcore gamer so I push my rig to the max every day during long game sessions. I also live in Florida on the second story, so my room heats up very quickly. My PC is properly cooled, but still gets warmer inside my PC than it would if I lived in a cooler climate area. Despite this heavy abuse, the hard drive is still working fine. As such, I've given it 5 eggs. If something works under the conditions I put it in for nearly three years, then I have no problems with it. I won't deduct ... MoreI keep my reviews very simple. Better description of part. Part no. is correct, but plastic attached face is wrong color and wrong size. I tried grinding it to fit, but could not get it to fit and function correctly. Contour is different. Therefore, I did not attempt to return it. My loss.
I was shopping for a replacement hard drive for my HP Pavilion S5000 desktop. The original PC came with a western Digital 640 GB/3GBPS internal hard drive. The hard disk crashed and prompted me to replace the hard drive. I shopped online for few days to find the exact match. I was able to find it but it costed fortune, even the grey market ones. Fortunately I came across this hard drive through google search that too for an excellent price even compared to the grey market products. Even though the capacity is slightly smaller but the performance factors were far superior than the one I had. So I decided to buy this at Walmart. I followed the instructions available on HP website to replace the hardrive. The hard drive did not come with any cables (you can use the ones already there in the computer). This hard drive was a perfect fit into bay and I was able to replace within 15 mins. I would strongly recommend this hard drive if it matches your current hard drive specification except for the capacity. Thank you WalMart!
