Let me start out by saying that I'm being realistic about this instrument considering the cost, look, and performance. First the good: I really love the five piece neck. It has a lovely curvature to it that is a bit different from most other basses I own. It's quite flat on the back, and very thin from the finger board to the back of the neck. The woods that the neck of my sample are constructed of are of premium quality. They really are flawless, and that's how they get away with the next point. One of the other things that I like about this unusual instrument, and something that others may consider a short coming, is the unfinished neck. It has simply been sanded to a smooth finish. One of the other things that I like about this unusual instrument, and something that others may consider a short coming, is the unfinished neck. It has simply been sanded to a smooth finish. It's quite organic feeling, and something unexpected. It really brings something different to playing the instrument. I got the transparent black color. They should really just call this "black" as you really can't see the wood grain. That's fine, I don't really mind, because the matched black chrome hardware is fantastic. It really looks classy. The bridge is a "bent metal" style, but with quite a lot more metal. I'd actually say it's probably cast in that shape. It does its job. This bass is the most percussive (punchy) bass of the six that I own, and the pre-amp has the head room to bring it out even more. this bass really has its own unique voice. It's got a lot of mid emphasis, and also captures a lot of the overtones. This gives you a lot of options, but I don't think it would play nicely with dropped tunings. The pre-amp is volume matched to the output of the passive circuit. And both the active and passive modes really do give you some nice tones. Over all, I really like the voice/tone of the instrument, and this is what convinced me to keep it. I'll include the usual platitude about how the knobs all feel nice, and the switch doesn't feel cheap, and the tuners are adequate. It has an LED to indicate when the 9v battery is going dead. I guess that's nice. Now the bad: Finish is terrible. The hole to access the truss rod is where the base of the neck meets the body. This pretty common on new basses. The hole in the body has a plastic insert, but the hole in the base of the neck is unfinished and splintered. This is visible from a few feet away. I'll be using a razor knife to clean up the hole. Not the end of the world, but for an instrument in this price class, you'd expect a little more finishing work to be done. The body looks like it was the product of a high school shop class project. Many of the curves that you'd expect to be nicely rounded appear to have been sanded, but still have flat spots. The strings that came on the instrument were bad. I realized they were bad when attempting to set the intonation on my new bass. The E string simply would not play ball. Again, not the end of the world, as I prefer DR Hi-Beams anyway, but this is one more strike against it. Buzzing on the E string above the 12th fret. Again, not really a deal-breaker. Initially I was experiencing some buzzing on both the E and A strings. I was able to adjust it out of the A string, and reduce it on the E string by raising the action a little. This is not a huge problem, because I don't play above the 12th fret very often. I haven't taken the time to really sit down and see if it's a fret leveling issue, or whether I need to adjust the neck relief and action a bit more. Either way, this is something that can easily be dealt with, but you're starting to stack more and more against a bass that isn't a "starter bass". Conclusion: If you can overlook the finishing issues, then the Yamaha TRBX504 is actually a lovely instrument to play. It's got a unique voice, quality electronics, and a neck that's worth the price of entry. I gave it three stars, because I expect a little more quality finishing in this price range. Hopefully Yamaha can work this out, because I REALLY REALLY do like the voice and feel of this instrument.

This exceptional bass is my first Yamaha and IMO a coup for them. They got everything right, comfort, tone, looks, workmanship. Just plain fun to play, no neck dive, and more than ample tone options. Pick ups are superb and look more like designer ones. would easily put this up against any other 4 string in this price range, including Ibanez SR500. Volume/pan/tone controls are intuitive and very functional. The only option I would have preferred is that the 504 came in green mist like the 304 but the black looks great too so more or less a non-issue. I love it and haven't played any of my others for weeks. Kudos to the R and D guys at Yamaha, they nailed it.

I've been playing for over 30 years. I mainly play a fretless bass but I like to play a fretted bass at times. My old fretted bass is worn out and spending 2k on an instrument that isn't my main go to bass is not something I'm going to do. This Yamaha is a great bass. The finish is perfect. Even in the hole to adjust the truss rod. I got the translucent black and It's a very black matte look. The frets are not super polished but are not sharp or sloppy. They play really nice, stand tall, and are capable of a wide variety of tones with different playing stlyes. The 5 piece neck is really playable. I'm really digging it. Bridge is the same gunmetal finish and isn't high mass but it's not flimsy like the stock fender and it is the standard 5 screw type if I ever decided to change it. I don't think I'll do it anytime soon. The sustain resonates so well. Maybe better than my pricey fretless. I'm really into the mahogany body. Mine came with the intonation setup perfectly. It shipped detuned as it should've. All I did was stretch the string and tune it. Man do these electronics shine. I've got to spend some more time really learning the controls but I was able to dial in a few tones I wanted to try immediately. My first impression of the strings is that they really suck. Maybe that's true but they do play well and they're not dead but I bought a set of my favorite strings that I'll get on when I get sick of these. Overall I got a lot more bass than I expected for the money. A beginner could really grow into this and more advanced players should be quite satisfied.
The TRBX 504 is a really nice Bass. Active or Passive it sounds good. This is my first Bass so I'm certain there is a degree of rose tinting going on but thus far i really don't have any complaints. It is fairly light in comparison to some of the Basses I have held and the profile of the neck doesn't remind me of a gen 3 Glock (which is to say a 2x4). The hard case which came with my package is nice but seems to lack an internal strap for the neck so the guitar will shift a bit more than i like. The stand works well and the tuner works fine once you find the right place to attach it to the headstock. The cable seems good but I've been playing using Rocksmith 2014 so it hasn't gotten any real work. My only complaint with the package would be the strap. It isn't a BAD strap it just isn't quite what I would want for a Bass Guitar. A little effort will get you a pad that you can feed the strap through and then it works well enough (though there are other straps I like better.)
I am impressed by this bass guitar. I never liked Yamaha bass guitars, I always found them to heavy and somehow low in design. Though they always tried to make some things new (some of their guitars are really awesome).Today I was looking for a new Bass guitar just to get some new sound etc. and I found this little nice grey colored TRBX504 hanging there, asking for my attention. I gave it a try and the first thing that got me was the very different shape of the neck. it is flat, from the first to the last fret. If you are a beginner, give it a try! I think it is easy to play, very easy!the sound passive - as I am the absolutely passive guy - has a very wide range and the active electronic gives it a little kick more. but here there is no being afraid of the battery low, because the passive sound is good (as long as you do not use a cable more than 20 m...)Well the active electronic has a little sound when you push the high frequency to much. but this is absolutely not necessary. It has a wide range of sound active and passive, and keeps his own character.Well, if you are looking for some bass guitar that can be your companion for a long time, as an old rabbit or a newcomer, I think this bass is a very good option.Forget about that bass guitars have to be heavy and thick and clumsy.
It's my first bass guitar so I may be a little biased but all I gotta say is that at this price mark you are getting a professional guitar. For me it ticks all the boxes: great price, killer looks, playability, craftsmanship (especially neck and frets), versatility (both active and passive pickup configuration), sexy sleek design. I mean there is really nothing bad to say about this guitar even if I wanted to be picky. So overall, my best buy for a long time. Thank you everybody at Yamaha for creating this baby and DV247 to ship it so fast. It reached me in 5 days and was £80 cheaper than UK online retailers. Cheers!
Ordered this bass from Guitar Center's website and for some reason they are incapable of same day shipment like every other web retailer. That aside, when I recieved the bass, the set up was non existent. It is shipped with the strings loosened and based on how the nut, the frets, and the neck relief was when tuned, not only was the set up non-existent but the quality control was as well. I brought the bass into one of the local GC stores to see what they could do. The technician filed the nut, filed the uneven frets, and tried to get the correct neck relief. All of these things did not change the poor quality of construction of the neck. I decided to return the bass on the condition that they would get me one in a manufacturer's sealed box and not one off the shelf ... MoreOrdered this bass from Guitar Center's website and for some reason they are incapable of same day shipment like every other web retailer. I waited the 5 days (was supposed to be overnighted - at my expense). Well, true to form the bass showed up at the store and was NOT in a sealed manufacturer's box and looked like some 15 year old abused it as it sat on the shelf. Also, this one had the same exact neck issues as the first one. I told them to keep it and give me my money back. I am a big fan of Yamaha musical instruments and the low quality of this bass really surprised me. What surprised me more was the ridiculously poor service. Lesson learned.
I already have a Yamaha RBX170 that I really enjoy playing. Now, I was looking for a bass with double humbuckers. After reading many reviews, comparing products, value received, and past experience, I decided on the Yamaha TRBX504. The Yamaha neck on both instruments is comfortable and one of the smoothest I have encountered. The fact that this bass is both passive and active with the flick of a switch is a definite bonus. In addition, I took a chance on this purchase as it was a "restock". I would certainly buy a Yamaha restock again as both the price and condition was excellent. First, I saw it in a shop just out of the corner of my eye and it grabbed my attention. So, I am usually not a fan of Yamaha, holding this bass in my hands convinced me in seconds I found it easy to play because of the neck form, which is curved asymmetrical, giving a good grip for my thumb. The when the seller passed me the cable to a very cheap amp, I was immediately sure that this is an exceptional bass guitar for a good price. As I am also not a fan of active electronic, the possibility to switch between active and passive is well done, and when during a concert your battery gives up, there is no big problem to switch to passive and change the battery before the next song.I love to take this bass when I do not know what the meeting with other musicians is ... MoreFirst, I saw it in a shop just out of the corner of my eye and it grabbed my attention. Meanwhile I am used to the thin grey matt painting and somehow, I started liking it. It makes the bass looking just different from any other.Try it! I also think that the bass is worth each penny.
