Backing up, my back up.

Had my last computer die on me. Was totally unexpected so I lost a good bit of files on the hard drive. I have for some time been keeping most of my data on an 8 TB external hard drive. Still, I had a good bit on the internal drive. I now keep everything on the external. I am told that even the best drives don't last forever, so just to be on the safe side I got this new 4 gig, to back up my files. I am told that putting the data on the 4 gig then unplugging and storing will make it last a long time. He's hoping that is true.

I've been using these external storage drives for years to backup critical information. This makes my third WD device. From "day one" I have had problems unmounting the drive from my computer. Normally with any drive, you can right-click then select "safely remove" or "eject". But with this drive, you do not have that option, and so you're left with hoping everything is closed and just unplugging it. The problem is that 50-60% of the time when you go to plug it back in, you get a prompt that there's an error on the drive and a recommendation to scan/repair the drive (which I usually do). This generally does the trick and balance is restored to the universe, but it's an irritating second step that I must undergo to use the drive. Perhaps I just received a defective unit, but this is something I'll definitely look out for (and avoid) when purchasing another drive.

Its small, compact size rests alongside the PS4 and turns off when not in use upon shutting the system down, since it's powered solely from the console through the included 3-foot long usb cable. As is with most hard drives due to partitions or system storage, you'll never get the full storage space as advertised, which amounts to 3.68 TB after formatting, according to my PS4's storage menu. I can't confirm or recommend for Xbox One owners since I do not have one, though I wouldn't see any reason why it won't work, as the installation procedures are similarly straightforward. I did purchase this hard drive when it was on sale for $100, which is a definite bang for your buck if Best Buy ever has this on sale for a similar price in the future. I would even go as far as recommending at the $200 MSRP, though keep an eye out if this ever gets marked down soon (Black Friday, maybe?).This is a definite must-have, especially if you have a growing collection of games (either downloaded via PlayStation Network/Xbox Live or installed from physical discs), or even if you have a handful of larger games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Final Fantasy XV, or practically any Call of Duty or Destiny title with all of their downloadable contents or updates combined. You also won't have to worry about uninstalling the free games that you would get for being a Xbox Live Gold/PlayStation Plus subscriber anymore, either!

HD needs more instructions

Got 4TB WD HD at great discount price with Easystore 32 GB usb stick. Why does a plug-USB backup HD need mroe instructions?* Did that title catch your eye * ;-)Well, it comes without specs on paper or online in minimal cardboard box, and there's little for troubleshooting help.Since I'd like to have mine plugged in 24/7 to my simple home file server, I'd like to actually know operating temperture and mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) rates, and USB power requirements. Does it work with Windows (of course), Mac (yes, but has to be reformated to HFS), Linux (yes, probably want to reformat). The bonus Easystore 32GB usb stick seems to be a rebranded Sandisk Cruzer drive, and was a nice extra pushing me to purchase. I wish it had instructions, but it gave me a few issues to realize it came formarted in FAT32. It had to be re-formated (to NTFS), before could copy files over 4GB in size. Minor headache that windows doesn't warn you about when copying large files to a drive formated in a manner that can't handle it (cryptic crash and error after wastes a lot of time). I now realize the FAT32 format is typically better for USB sticks, as if abruptly removed, your fles are less likely to be corrupted, versus the journaled NTFS format. However, sometimes, the user wants to move big 4gb files, and windows won't tell you why it's not working, until it crashes long minutes into a big file copy.Again no instructions. I'm not even sure if the supplied WD file encrytion software works with NTFS. The online manual that came on the USB stick does not mention compatible drive formats, in its 50-some page PDF file.Overall, after figuring out why a Windows 4GB file limit was hit, then the drive and memory stick has been performing admirably for the first month of use. I'd recommend it, but a little first-time instruction would help, for setup to Windows, Mac, or Linux drive format.

Highly Recommend
27 February 2022

I absolutely live these drives. I must have about 5 or 6 because they are so versatile. I have 1 attached to my router as a NAS type setup. I have 2 for my Xbox, 1 for captures and 1 for games. I use like 2 for captures on my pc and the rest for backups. WD is my go-to because of the reliability. The one attached to my router has lasted me over 8 years and is still going strong. Speed has been quite good and gaming off one on Xbox is sometimes faster than the internal drive and does well on pc for games although obviously an SSD would be faster, they still aren't near the value these drives have. It's crazy how affordable they are and if they are on sale, I always tend to pick up one or two because you can never have enough storage. Highly recommend

It’s an interesting drive
24 May 2023

It’s hooked up to a router for file share but no one can see it WD tells me it’s a Cisco issue Cisco telling me it WD issue. I hookup the old WD drive guess what everyone sees it. So I’m having Geek Squad take a look at it…lots of ventilation so far not noises but that’s because it’s plugged into the router at the moment that no one can access waiting to hear back from Cisco and WD for a conference call but waiting to see what the squad says to when they show up. It’s been an interesting puzzle. I want to recommend it but having hard time just incase some customers might want it to work right out of the box. For the size of 22 TB drive and it does not take up a lot room it’s great. Now on the other hand, setup has be an interesting journey so far.

NOT VISTA COMPATIBLE!
25 May 2020

I read the reviews and I checked the customer questions to be sure this was compatible with Windows Vista. Multiple questions about this very issue were asked & answered in the positive. So because my poor old Vista computer has been saying hard drive failure imminent for about a year or so & crashes every day now multiple times, I figured I’d better back it up pretty soon. I can’t afford a new desktop at this time & extremely dislike my ASUS laptop but I do want some of my files/pics from the Vista system so I purchased the WD EasyStore external hard drive to back it up. I can’t afford a new desktop at this time & extremely dislike my ASUS laptop but I do want some of my files/pics from the Vista system so I purchased the WD EasyStore external hard drive to back it up. First nowhere on the box or paperwork (which is just an arbitration agreement in different languages) does it say anything about operating system compatibility so I plugged in the hard drive The first part of the installation process says I need a driver I don’t have so I updated the drivers then a box came up that said NOT COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM with a GIF of a broken heart. That’s nice. So I looked on the WD Easystore website for the PDF of Instructions for this external hard drive & downloaded it. The first part of the downloaded instructions said compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Macs-Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra. That’s it, so no, Vista is not able to download the installation of this hard drive. So what were all the “yes’s” when others asked if it was Vista compatible? I did discover if you download folder by folder to the hard drive it will take them & read them just fine, it just takes time & since I really don’t want my whole C drive of Vista downloaded anyway it will get the job done with patience. But I was curious what the heck else is the download exec. that comes loaded on this drive that is not compatible with Vista? Would it make transferring faster, easier? The drive seems to work fine doing it folder by folder so I’ll keep it but for those counting on Vista compatibility it is a no go for total access.

Small, Easy to Use
11 November 2022

Pretty sure it's a good drive. I really haven't used it as of yet. I purchased this Drive to use as storage for my Blink Outdoor Security System. I plugged it in to my Laptop while I was waiting on my Blink Cameras to arrive. It did work just fine while plugged into my Laptop. My Cameras finally arrived. Got everything hooked up and the Drive was only Beeping a very low beep when plugged into the Blink Sync Module 2. After some investigation, I found that the Largest Drive I could use with the Blink System was a 1tb Drive, I had ordered a 2tb by mistake. I couldn't see returning the drive, it was my fault, not Western Digital. I picked it up for a great price IMO, it does work, and I eventually will use it for something.

Tiny but mighty

I've had a WD MyPassport for about 10 years. It still works great but given it's age, I thought I'd get another in case it fails. The WD EasyStore is amazing. It's even smaller than the Passport and very fast. No need to install the software, it works right out of the box. Truly plug and play. I was able to backup all the files on the Passport and my computer in about an hour and I have 10 years worth of HD images, mp3's and video's. AMAZING little device. I would definitely recommend this product.

WD Easystore 4 TB external drive

I wanted to replace my older external hard drive that has been backing up my computer for quite a long time. It was 2TB, old and with my backup routine of backing up my desktop computer it was starting to get close to getting "full".I figured I would double the space and this fit the bill and was fairly inexpensive. I've only had it for a few days but have backed up my drives on the desktop without a problem. I use a 3rd party backup software and this is just sitting on top of my computer for whenever that software triggers a backup. This is small, powered by the USB port and seems to be transferring data fairly quickly. WD has always been a good drive manufacturer in the past so I bought it.
