The Climber truly is the best compact everyday carry (better than the Compact)—it features a set of 13 most universally-useful tools packed in the most compact form, with only 3 layers. It's designed to have no specialized tools but contain everything you're going to need in most everyday-life situations. If you're looking for the most all-around capable model but don't know what to choose, pick this one—you'll be most pleased. Be sure to buy with it a precision screwdriver to add another useful function to this great toolkit.

This knife has been a constant companion since it was given to me my my grandfather as a teenager. The quality is excellent as is the level of customer service from the UK distributor and Victorinox. After many years use I sent it in to the UK distribuor to ask if they could sharpen the blades professionally. I offered to pay but they refused, sent the knife off to Switzerland at their own cost and even wrote and apologised sending me a complimentary Classic SD when return took a little longer than expected. Needless to say the knife came back with both blades and scissors sharpened to perfection and the mechanism cleaned and oiled. That level of service is basically non existent elsewhere in our throwaway world except for perhaps Cross Pens: outstanding. I have ... I have had the handyman at least 8 years at this point(could be closer to 10, don't remember purchase date) and it has served every general need I've used it for. I don't put the knife through heavy abuse such as for work but more for quick everday tasks. I just keep regular maintenance (cleaning, oiling, sharpening). I don't beleive it's overly bulky and have carried in my front jeans pocket for years with other items. I did spill a little battery acid on it once and it tarnished the metal(to be expected) but had no effect on functionality at all. Always recommend!

This my second pocket knife like this one! I really like it and carry it almost every where. I sharpened my first one so much that the main blade got to worn over the years so I bought the same one just in another color and put my first one in my tool box. Great knife for every day use! Love the tooth pick and scissors that are built in it! Plus nice to have a small tweezers whenever you need them!
The Spartan is very similar to the Tinker (small), but it's a must have for every collector. If you're not a collector, the Spartan is almost a perfect EDC. I prefer my SAKs to have the scissors but not everyone wants/needs a scissors in their EDC. If you won't use the scissors, then your choice between Spartan and Tinker boils down to preference... corkscrew vs screwdriver. I'm not a huge fan of the perpendicular screwdriver so I prefer the corkscrew, which comes in handy for many things beyond opening a bottle of wine. The corkscrew also allows you to add-on the tiny flathead screwdriver to repair your eyeglasses, which is a huge bonus for me. So I would take the Spartan over Tinker any day. New Model XXL.Cannot understand why Victorinox has discontinued the XAVT. The "New" Replacement, the XXL with plain red scales has 7 less functions compared to the XAVT. Victorinox obviously now does not feel that electronic parts should be on a Swiss Penknife ? Not very exciting this new model, looks like tools are duplicated when you look at the photos ? Is the presentation box it comes in, Made in China ? If so, it should be Made in Switzerland, like the knife ?? The grey cardboard boxes you use for the Swiss Champ etc are Swiss Made. The XAVT was a much better, more interesting collectors knife. Why is the XXL 120CHF cheaper than the XAVT ?? The XAVT was CHF 449 and the New model XXL is only CHF 329. How many months did it take Victorinox to design the XXL ?? Has Victorinox made a Leather Pouch to fit the new XXL ?? Check out the Internet on various Knife Forums, the XXL is not getting good feedback. Will the XLT be the next knife to discontinue ? Why does the XXL have normal red scales. Transparent red or Silver or plain green or plain black would have been a different or more interesting choice for the scales ?
My first was what would now be a Ranger, in 1983. Loved making walking sticks for my grandparents, with all the engravings and carvings etc. All done with my Swissie. Years later there was Leatherman... and I invested in the heavy duty pliers-based multitool. With knife laws being what they are now, and seeing some really cool little add-on gadgets you get now (please stock the FireAnt & FireFly permenently), I got my first Swissie for years: this Spartan. The basic model that doesn't leave me without the Awl or the Cork Screw. Thin & light and 'innocent looking'. Handy for food prep and unpacking at work.I can say that the old saying, "They don't make them like they used to", doesn't apply here. There is no more 'double-jointed' blades that can't take too much ... MoreMy first was what would now be a Ranger, in 1983. There is no more 'double-jointed' blades that can't take too much pressure during deeper cuts. The big Screw Driver has a handy stop at 90 degrees. Love the tools in the scales (why can't they all have the Plus option all the time?) To me, they seem more corrosion-resistant, smoother and more 'drum tight' than my '80's one. All I can say is, it won't be long before I get my hands on a Ranger again, and replay some childhood memories out in the woods...
A brilliant well made choice for my first Swiss Army Knife! It has all the things I want and none of the things I don't want. The quality is amazing and its reassuring weight only adds to this. It is one of the thicker Victorinox models, but is still comfortable to hold, which is helped by my large hands. I was originally going to go for the Camper for whittling and camping use, but decided I wanted the file as well. I heard that Victorinox scissors are amazing so I decided that is something I also wanted. I also thought the small pliers would be a good addition. I am very happy!
I have owned several of these knives and have found the Climber to be the best quality and most practical to carry in my pockets. I enjoy giving them away to friends and relatives. I wish they had been available during my Boy Scout days. I use mine every day. Beware of lower quality imitations.
I am NOT an outdoorsman. I rarely leave my city. I work in an office. I do go on hikes from time to time.I have never needed a saw , but I often need scissors and Victorinox makes GREAT scissors. I thought I would not use the corkscrew but once I ordered a Victorinox eyeglass screwdriver that goes in the corkscrew it made the corkscrew very important. I like the hook for getting leverage when pulling on a string or wire, or carrying paint cans. I use the small blade for opening packages and everyday cutting but save the large blade for heavier work. The small screwdriver works as a Phillip's in a pinch and the large flat head is always great for prying things open or to scrape at things. I use the Reamer/awl for scraping, or pocking holes in many things, and the tweezers are a MUST. I dont use the toothpick for teeth, I use it for getting at little things I may have dropped into a crack or to maneuver a tiny object . I am a city guy, Dad and Grandpa so I use my Victorinox for cutting hockey tape, fixing glasses, opening packages, getting out slivers, snipping threads, turning screws and cutting rope. So for me its all about the scissors , screwdrivers , and tweezers. The Climber is all of that and it small enough to sit comfortably in my pant pocket. I also love that people dont get scared when I bust out a Swiss army knife. Its a great tool and an essential every day carry .
