6 cats - Not one will eat them

I have a cat family that includes a mom and 3 kittens I fostered and then adopted. They have feline herpies and my vet recommended ongoing lysine supplementation to reduce flare ups that result in conjunctivitis. So having 6 cats, each with different food preferences I figured this could be an easy way to be sure each got the appropriate dose. BUT NOT ONE CAT WILL EAT THEM. They even pick out the pieces when I tried to chop them up and mush into canned food. Same for dicing them up and adding to dry food. So beware. Convenient if they will eat them but that is a big IF! I went back to the powder.

I used to give these to my cat Leah who has feline herpes twice a day as directed (recommended by her vet). She’s a super picky eater and USED to love these. They helped so much with her flare ups. I even have them on auto-ship. Never had a problem with her eating them before. This new bag I just got though she won’t even touch them. Which is very strange of her. She’s still eating her normal food, drinking water, and acting the same, so I know it’s not health related. They do smell a little different compared to the other bags. Like I said she’s a super picky eater (she hates wet food and most meats) so I can’t give her a powdered form of lysine. Im thinking they either tweaked the formula or this is a bad batch. My cat has used the Vetri Science lysine chews since I picked her up at an area shelter when she was 12 weeks old. I didn't realize at the time that she had that awful shelter cough/sneezing/eye gunk. I observed her for 30 minutes before making a decision to adopt her-- she was the energy and personality winner over two dozen other kittens and cats that day! The shelter did not disclose any health problem, and I had not noticed it. That's okay because I was smitten with her already when I realized the next day that she had running eyes, gooey tear ducts, and a hacking cough with sneezing. She wasn't going anywhere. Online research turned up lysine as an aid, and I settled on this well-reviewed product. Online research turned up lysine as an aid, and I settled on this well-reviewed product. It changed my kitten's health for the better within 12 hours of eating the first chew, I kid you not. She will be six years old in August, and she still happily eats one a day. If she skips a few days like when I'm out of town and the family forgets to feed them to her, she's only a little eye-teary and sneezy by the time I get home. The consistent addition of them to her daily routine is what appears to be important, even if a few days are skipped from time to time.I did notice with dismay when I received my last order of chews a few months ago that they were very hard, an unexpected change. The bag was well sealed and the product had not expired. I've also noticed that customers who have bought chews from other companies have similar complaints about their lysine chew products that were once chewy but now hard. I wonder what has caused the change? A new manufacturing idea to prolong shelf life? I need to write Vetri Science to inquire. That said, there is a very easy way to remedy the hardness problem. I take two-weeks' worth of chews at a time and place them in a small, ziploc storage bag. Then I take a tiny piece of a fresh lettuce leaf and put that in the bag with the chews. Seal the bag. By the next day, the chews are nice and, er, chewy :) Take the piece of leaf out or the chews will get too soft. The moisture from the leaf bit is just right to moisten a small bag of hardened chews. My cat never lets a crumb of these things go to waste. She loves them, and she only likes to eat wet seafood for her meals, never any other kind of meat. I don't understand why she likes the taste of chicken liver, being a seafood gal and all. It doesn't matter.Plus, these are made in the USA, which is a huge plus when I make nutritional decisions for my pets.

Formula change a no-go!
10 July 2023

If I could give zero stars, I would. Upon opening a new bag I immediately noticed that the smell and consistency of these has changed drastically--before they smelled very appetizing (even to me) and were moist and now they smell terrible and are dry & crumbly and my cats, who always quickly & eagerly snarfed them up will not touch them. I noticed in comparing the ingredients on the old & new packages that, while the ingredients are the same, the hydrolyzed chicken liver (the tasty & moist ingredient I assume) has moved a couple of spaces down on the list of ingredients, meaning it is a smaller percentage of the ingredients than it was before--judging from the nasty smell, I'm guessing much smaller. I have depended on these for many years to help keep my cat with chronic herpes healthy. Bad sad move, VetriScience Laboratories!

Hunter doesn't like!
9 April 2024

Hunter is our FIV+ Egyptian Mau; I thought L-lysine would be good for him. VetriScience is a good brand, but he doesn't like it. We mix it in his wet food to boost his immune system. He loves his Greenies dental treats and Guardian Plus natural flea & tick defense (all natural, no poison). He doesn't go outside, but he loves spending time on the lanai. It makes my heart sad that he is FIV+; he showed up at our house, thin and hungry ... intact, of course! He was about 12 months old; we took him to the vet for a health exam and to be neutered and microchipped. Because he tested positive for FIV, he cannot be with our other cats; however, he has a wonderful safe indoor life now and is an awesome cat. Inconsistent

I have ordered this product through both Amazon and my vet. The first packaged we received he LOVED these treats. Couldn't get enough. They were through Amazon. I ordered through them two more times. The third time the package came with no noticeable damage or openings. I opened it and noticed a different smell and the treats were harder than normal. So I figured because I ordered through a third party it had set on the shelf too long so I got them through the vet. That worked for a little while and then the same thing happened again. Packaging was sealed no visible damage and the expiration date was 1 year ahead, but when opened this awful came with it. The treats were hard and he REFUSES to eat them. Promising supplement, but bad taste apparently.

The medication seemed to be helping with the sneezing and ocular discharge my cat gets when his herpesvirus flares up, but after about a week of them he won’t touch them anymore. The only way I could get him to eat it is if I crush it into pieces and mix it with a lickable cat treat, which defeats the purpose of me trying to switch from the oral paste to treats.I would say, “Maybe vets just have trouble making formulas that mask the medicinal taste,” but my cat LOVED Vetoquinol’s L-Lysine supplement oral paste, so I will go back to that. If any of these supplement companies can start making treats that cats actually want to eat I would love to try again, because it is much less hassle to give him a treat than to administer a paste that he’ll slop onto the carpet ... MoreThe medication seemed to be helping with the sneezing and ocular discharge my cat gets when his herpesvirus flares up, but after about a week of them he won’t touch them anymore. They really work!
20 July 2024

My cat's vet advised that these be given daily to the severely sick and immune compromised kitty that appeared at my back door 8 yrs. ago. The vet said the kitty was nearly dead and would need lifelong supportive care due to diseases she had. I was told to give these soft chews as though they were a "treat". My kitty has been thriving as a result. She is now a healthy, playful kitty most of the time. When she has a bout of respiratory distress, these chews help her to recover quickly.

We've ordered these for years, and it was something our kitties looked for each morning and evening. Now, there's something that doesn't smell right and it's almost impossible to get them to eat any. Clearly something changed for the worse. I read other similar treats have similar issues. The companies don't care a bit about the product consistency. I'd rather spend a dollar or two more for something that will be eaten rather than get product that's inedible to them. I just don't understand the mentality of companies these days. They should know that if they have a good thing going, they need to keep it up. People will pay a little more for their pets if that's what it takes.I kept hoping a new bag would be changed back tot he original, and even ordered elsewhere. ... MoreWe've ordered these for years, and it was something our kitties looked for each morning and evening.
