Amazing Nose but Too Sweet
21 May 2021Coffee Cup Whiskey

On the 12, the nose is absolutely beautiful. Upfront is hazelnut, honey, and malt with sherry red fruits and coconut underneath. There is lots of chocolate strawberry, oak, cinnamon, and orange zest that appear as the whisky opens up.The palate is far less exciting compared to the nose. It starts very dessert driven with marzipan, butter, ginger snap cookie, graham crackers, and caramel apple. The mid transitions into baked nuts like pecan pie and candied walnuts. The finish is dry and ends with oak, mild sherry mustiness, clove, allspice, and almond toffee with faint heat and walnut waxiness that trails off.Overall this is amazing whisky. It’s a blend of sherry and European oak casks and the quality is phenomenal. For 86 proof, the flavors are robust and rich. ... MoreOn the 12, the nose is absolutely beautiful. Macallan products tend to run pretty high in price but this is no disappointment.

The Macallan 12, Sherry Cask, is the standard bearer of mid-priced whisky. It has managed to maintain the best price point to quality ratio out there. Nobody would be disappointed to be offered a dram.Whilst it lacks the rounded finish of the 18yo, it would be churlish to hold this against a whisky which is quarter of the price. All in all, the Macallan 12yo Sherry Cask is pretty much the inflection point of the graph of the law of diminishing returns for whiskies - yes, if you are a connoisseur, you will enjoy the older expressions more than this, but for anyone else, this is your bottle.

Didn’t see the box was purple (vs black) bc they left the white outer sleeve on it :/. My intent was to purchase the 18 YR Sherry Cask (black box) but purchased the 18 YRDouble Cask. I am not a fan of bourbon barrel aged/finished Scotch and this version is a good example why. I find the finish to be dry, causing the finish to be disappointing. It does, however, start out with the same richness as the Sherry Cask, but more oaky which causes the dry finish. Welp! Now I have something to serve “on-the-fence about Scotch” Bourbon drinkers.

Excellent introductory Scotch...smooth and flavorful
27 March 2023

I wanted to find another single malt for diversity as I have been drinking 12 year old Aberlour, which is still a favorite. For my tastes, the 12 year old Macallan Double Cask is ideal. (remembering smell and taste are subjective). This whisky is flavorful and smooth with barely any bite. Scotch on the rocks is how I prefer to drink it, and doing so seems to bring out the vanilla, cinnamon, and buttery caramel flavors. I like that it isn't peaty as well. I would recommend this scotch to someone who has never tried a single malt. Despite being slightly more expensive, it offers excellent value for the services it provides.

Exceptional Option
27 March 2023

"Honeysuckle, malted barley, and goose berries hit the nose upon uncorking, followed by oak, drenched sorghum, and the aroma of a Sears and Roebuck catalog left on the backseat of a 1968 Plymouth Fury in a July downpour.Denim, pop rocks, crawfish, and birthday candles make up the initial flavor, which is followed by apricots, marshmallows, and milk duds before ending with wisteria, denim, and a grandmother's stained bathrobe. The aftereffects of a hangover are a tightly knit web of salty popcorn, moldy mushrooms, and alka seltzer, which culminates in the sensation of orangutans tapping on one's skull.

Good, but taste has changed over time
6 January 2023

I've sampled Macallan Twelves for over 30 yrs. I keep small samples of various whiskies thru the years under nitrogen in a climate controlled frig. It's still a good pick, if you like Speyside malt styles. But like a lot of whiskies, they've made slight process and sourcing changes over the years that probably increased efficiencies at the price of taste. Most may not recognize the subtle nuance changes from year to year, but over time they do add up. My speculative guess is they take a slightly large cut from the distillate heart nowadays and try to make it up the taste with aging and blending. What they produced 30 years ago was 'great' for its style. Today it is merely 'good.' Be warned whiskey snobs.

It truly is that excellent.

I enjoy rye and bourbon a lot. I recently made the decision to try scotch. My father, a hefty scotch consumer, advised me to buy this bottle. Sincerely, I wasn't a big fan of it at first. For me, it was a little too soft. I put the bottle away for a few weeks, then when I opened it again, WOW! I noticed something there that I had previously missed. Smooth and lovely best describe it. Excellent nose and finish. I found it hard to believe my initial disappointment. You'll really like this if you like bourbons like Angels Envy.

Neither here nor there. Better Speysides cheaper

After having tried both Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12 and Highland Park 12, I bought this MacAllan 12 Yr double cask expecting something better and was let down. Sherry barrel aging in Speysides typically impart the almost prune-like sweet character from the Pedro Ximenez grapes' influence, but this is lacking in the MacAllan. Bourbon barrel aging usually produces vanilla, baking spice and caramel notes, but these are also lacking in the MacAllan. The peat element of the MacAllan manifests as an unpleasant bitterness, and the alcoholic burn is stronger than competitors. Odd because their production processes are very similar.

Quite smooth.
11 April 2023

On the nose, the Macallan 12 Year Double Cask has a sweet and fruity aroma with notes of honey, caramel, and dried fruit. Upon tasting, the whisky is well-balanced with a creamy mouthfeel and flavors of vanilla, toffee, and cinnamon, followed by a long, warm finish with hints of oak and spice. It is a well-balanced, smooth, and complex whisky that is perfect for sipping on its own or paired with your favorite cigar or dessert. Highly recommended!
