The main mechanics are very similar to those of Magic: The Gathering, from the pre-game process of building your own decks to the gameplay of combat and using card abilities. However, this is a multiplayer co-op game that is also different from MTG in combat and other mechanics. (And, of course, it's Lord of the Rings!) You win by committing cards to make progress on the main Quest at the start of each round, but you also need to plan and leave cards uncommitted so you can survive combat once the enemies attack you later in each round. It's a great mix of strategy and chance risk-taking.I recommend looking online for videos that teach the game to get a feel for it. That is, with more players you have more flexibility to choose who takes damage, plus each player can specialize in particular abilities that contribute to the whole group. You can have your tank, your healer, your resource collector, and so on. This tends to make it easier to win with more players, even though the scale of challenge also increases with the number of players. The art is fantastic, and does a good imitation of John Howe, though it is not.Similar to MTG, you might want to think twice if you don't like the more involved or complex games, but otherwise, you should definitely give it a try!

I love anything with the Lord of the Rings theme. I really enjoyed this card game, in spite of the fact that my brother-in-law and I lost the first 3 times we played it … 😊 … but won the 4th time! We’ve only tried the first set of quests; can’t wait to try out some of the expansions. So far I feel it has a “Magic the Gathering” type of sense to it, but as a cooperative game, instead of pitting one player against another.

This is, hands down, one of the best solo games I own, maybe the best. I love the difficulty, the depth of rules, and the replayability and variety it has.You would want this game if you're looking for a great solo and co-op game that is fun, complex, challenging, and highly replayable. The rule books will give you decklists, and ringsdb has tons of great decks. In my opinion, your first and best try at deckbuilding should just be taking one of the starter decks and removing cards that you never want or get a chance to use until you're down to about 30-40 cards. It is the quickest and easiest way to make your deck more effective. Not tournament legal, but you'll win more often. On the other hand, you might not like how difficult it is to grasp the rules. You can get up and playing rather quickly if you watch a tutorial or spend about 20 minutes reading the rulebook AND have prior card game experience in things like Magic, but you will quickly realize you are either getting a few rules wrong or as you buy cards you will realize there are just some nuances you didn't even notice. No big deal, just fix your understanding, reshuffle the cards, and play again - you're only in for about 30 minutes so no harm no foul. But I can see how some people could be put off by the depth of the rules. For comparison, I find it simpler than Magic: The Gathering so if you've played a game like that then you'll be fine after a few tries. The game is also very difficult. If you have thin skin, not much time, or little patience then this game may not be for you. However, there are "easy" modes you can play which I hear are just as fun. If you think you might like this game, then I wouldn't worry about the difficulty too much. There is also inherent randomness because it's a card game. If that sounds bad, then this may be trouble for you.Overall I highly recommend this one. It is my favorite card game in my collection, and definitely in the top 5 of all games I own. Don't be afraid to try before you buy, however, as there are websites that will let you play the game for free to see if it is something you might like.

I owned the original version of this and enjoyed it, but didn't get very far with it for reasons I cannot recall. However, for a solo deck building game, it's incredibly complex and replayable in a tcg way without the need of having someone else to play with. Initially, the rules are a lot. I read the rules and watched a teach you to play video I found. Once that was done, I've found myself playing over and over. Trying new decks as much as I could with the core decks (already bought additional expansions). It's challenging, fun, thought provoking, and it feels like lord of the rings. The art is incredible and the little quotes on each card brings me back to the books and movies. If you like solo deck games, this is one you should checkout.
Great Co-op game with lots of replayability out of the box. Adding in a single expansion, from which there are numerous, opens even more replability. LoTR LCG can be a difficult game, but finding a way to punch through a difficult quest is fulfilling.
For their living card games, FFG has followed the practice of making a core set that serves as an introduction to the game--these core sets have enough to get you started, but not enough to play the game in full. This would allow them to sell the core set for much less than they could otherwise, making the expense of trying the game much less prohibitive. For players who liked this introduction and wanted to play the game properly, a second core set was often considered important. This revised core set removes that need entirely. If you are buying the game for the first time, this is the only core set you will need.Should you buy this if you have the original core set? My answer would be that, if you were planning on buying a second, you should. If you already have two (or three), there isn't much point to purchasing this.On top of being a new printing that updates the cards with the latest errata, the game includes 3 copies of all player cards (except heroes), whereas the original core set came with only one or two copies of some player cards. This revised edition contains 4 threat dials (instead of 2) of a smaller, more convenient size, and a lot more tokens. In addition to having additional much-needed tokens, some of the additional resource, progress, and damage tokes are larger and marked with 3s and 5s, which is a tremendous convenience. The final difference is the addition of rules for playing the three included scenarios as a short campaign. This is a great introduction to the campaign rules seen in the LotR Saga expansions.
I have been playing the Lord of the Rings LCG for nearly 10 years now. I was excited when I heard FFG was going to release a revised core set because I’m a fan of the Arkham Horror LCG revised core set, and Marvel Champions. Let’s be real, the original releases of the LOTR LCG, and Arkham Horror LCG were a bit lacking in cards, and box space. You were often left needing to purchase 2 core sets in order to build fully playable decks, or if you wanted to be able to increase the player limit. This new revised core set fixes this problem, providing full play sets for cards, the ability to play with 4 players out of the box, and more box space to boot. I still feel like this game plays best with 1-2 players, but the option to have more is excellent. If you’ve been ... MoreI have been playing the Lord of the Rings LCG for nearly 10 years now. This new revised core set fixes this problem, providing full play sets for cards, the ability to play with 4 players out of the box, and more box space to boot. I still feel like this game plays best with 1-2 players, but the option to have more is excellent. If you’ve been playing this game for years, you won’t find anything new here, aside from a new rulebook/rules reference (much better than the original). There is a new campaign mode in the box, with cards that your deck can gain during the campaign, as well as cards the encounter deck can gain. I haven’t finished the campaign yet, but I like it. For those of you who maybe played Arkham but not LOTR, LOTR is typically built of standalone quests that don’t have to be completed in a specific order (with the exception of the saga expansions I suppose). The campaign mode is reminiscent of Arkham. But you don’t need to buy this to get the campaign rules. They are free on FFG’s website. So who is this revised core set for? Honestly, I feel like both new players and experienced players can benefit from this box. The box alone is a bonus for its space. The rulebook is great for newer players, and I still prefer to have the physical campaign rules/cards it includes. Is this a must buy for veteran players of the game? No. But I still found the revised core set as a positive addition to my LOTR collection. Now, I know I didn’t go much into how the game plays. There are a large variety of videos on YouTube that date back to when this game originally came out. It is an excellent co-op card game, and set the foundation for Arkham Horror LCG and Marvel Champions. The artwork is incredible, and the game plays incredibly well as a solo experience, with so many varying strategies and deck builds to work your way through, especially as you build your collection. I highly recommend checking out some videos online if you have no experience with this game, then jump in with this revised core set. If you are a veteran player of the game, I still think it’s worth it, but I’m a sucker for shiny new things. It’s the same great game we’ve been playing for years. Top recommendation from me.
I foolishly got rid of this game years ago during it's initial run and regretted it almost instantly. I love co-op games, love games with a solo play mode, and love Lord of the Rings. The themeing of the game, the elegance of the rules, and just how much they managed to capture Tolkien's world in the art, the game play, the components, and the rules is absolutely beyond compare. The single best LCG/CCG out there today, bar none.
Quality game as always from FFG. Excellent, easy to follow rules although typically there still seems to be some “grey areas” which can be resolved by BoardGameGeek web site. There are many expansions to the game as it is a Living Card Game but these are not essential to really enjoy the core game. Zatu service & pricing is great. Overall I would recommend if you like immersive card games
i was reluctant to delve into LotR card game wondering if ti would be overly mechanical. the up front learning seems a lot but YouTube video walkthroughs made it easy. after the second or third round we totally understood it (4 player) and loved the first game. so much that we immediately played a second game, which says a lot because we normally go through our library for variety.
