No, the TV should be working - period. The 1-year product warranty by TCL is inadequate but serves that company well - at my expense. So, I will take the $500 loss and look at a better 55" TV brand - possibly from a different supplier, since BestBuy clearly doesn't vet it's vendors especially well: the failure of TCL TVs is well documented now. I wish this was clear 2 years ago.

This TCL is the replacement as it was the only other 55" TV at the same price in the store. This TV works as expected. The video is smooth, there are no glitches in the video. Connection to the Roku part was little bit of a pain as you have go to the website to get it enabled. But so far NO issues with video or configuration setup with the TV. Although the image/video play is clear as it should be, it still has look of the older LED TVs where it doesn't look like can just reach in and touch the object on the screen. BUT still has really nice coloring corrections through the Roku app you can down load on your phone. The on screen configurations doesn't have near the configurations options that the APP does. So you'll want to definitely download the app to do any changes. I DO recommend this TV if you are looking to upgrade from a 5+ year LED tv as I did. My other was a 8+ year Vizio 42" LED 1080i/720p.PROS to me: Video playback was very smooth with NO hiccups of any kind in the video/streaming/satellite playback, no issues with setup, TV works as expected. Still has pretty decent picture quality for a 'budget' tv.CONS to me: Setup of Roku required you to log onto the Roku website and enable the roku features and the on screen configurations are not near as intuitive or extensive as the Roku phone app you can download. Also the video 'clarity' or 'crispness' is not a as good as other TV's in the same price range.

I am not a techie and not a stickler for superb picture quality/resolution, but this TV is an improvement from my prior TV and has good HD picture quality. 65 inch size is perfect for my use and I found the process of setting this up with my cable and wifi to be as easy as other reviews have noted. The home screen is easy to set-up and you can adjust it via the TV or an electronic device once you set up a Roku account. The remote is simply laid out and you can turn your smart phone into a second remote. I purchased a small sound bar to use with this and set-up was simple. BAD INTERNET REVIEWS ----GO SONY OR SAMSUNG
25 April 2023

Last year I searched the internet for the best brand tv after my LG tv kept turning on and off and I owned that tv for 10 years. Well, my new TCL tv didn't even last me 1 month, it shut off during my show and never came back on. I returned it and was going to save up for a better one when my brother bought me another TCL and now I have a new problem. It has a bright spot on the picture, a permanent sun spot and this tv barely finished off three months. I am now saving up for a Sony or a Samsung. I'll never trust the internet for best tv reviews again.

Excellent TV

I bought this television for my mom for Christmas for our living room and she absolutely loves it. This TV replaced a 50" 1080p 8-year-old Vizio, so it was quite the upgrade for her in the resolution department. It has been nearly a week since I gave it to her and she's still not done commenting on how beautiful the image looks. I read a lot of reviews that said that the audio was really bad on this television, so I bought a soundbar just in case, but for her the audio is terrific, so I am going to return the soundbar. My one and only complaint about this TV that cost it a star is the ridiculously short power cable especially in relation to the power port being on the side of the television. I had to rearrange our entire entertainment setup and put the surge protector several shelves up just to be able to make the cord reach. To have a TV this big and a cable that short is ridiculous. I know that a lot of people mount these on walls with fancy upper wall outlets, but for those in apartments or homes without that, this cord is massively inadequate. When buying this TV be sure to keep that in mind. If you mount this on a stand as we have it you may have to get creative to get power to the unit. But, as I said, that is the only major complaint I have about it so far. The audio is adequate, the image quality is as good as some of the way more expensive TVs I saw at my local Best Buy, and other than the stupidly short power cable it is very easy to set up. I'm sure it is nice to have the bragging rights of owning a $1000+ TV, but for those that just want to watch TV with a crisp and clear image with vibrant colors without breaking the bank then this is the perfect television. We aren't cord cutters in my house, but should we ever decide to finally cut the cord this is the perfect television for it. The Roku menu is easy to navigate. The TV defaults to starting up into the Roku Home Screen menu, but it is easy to go into the Power settings and program a cable box to be the default which is how I set it up.As with any product the negative reviews should be taken into consideration. This is just my experience after having the TV for a week. If anything changes I'll be sure to post an update to this review. But, so far, I've luckily not been able to substantiate any of the negative reviews for this product. I would highly recommend this TV. It is phenomenal for the price and checks off all the boxes for just being able to watch television and navigate all the streaming services.

Love this TV. It replaced a 50 inch TV that wat destroyed by lightning. Best thing that happened because the picture on this is far superior to the original one. It is comparable to my $500 Vizio QLED, maybe slightly better. Just be sure you go through the settings while watching any video because it arrives in the power save mode and you can only change picture settings while watching a video. I have two negative comments regarding the video but they are not severe enough to warrant less than 5 stars:1. When a scene goes fully dark there is noticeable splotchiness across the screen - appears to be backlight bleed. This is not noticeable at all during normal viewing.2. When the picture settings are adjusted for good blacks, some videos that contain indoor scenes seem to be darker than intended. The sound out of the built-in speakers is decent but I paired mine with a Yamaha sound bar. The TV can control the sound bar's power and audio level by using an HDMI cable connected to input 1 but you will need to detect the sound bar through settings / CEC.The built-in Roku works very smoothly, connects to Netflix and other apps quickly. During the initial setup you can select which apps you want to download and which apps you want to appear in the apps menu. What impressed me most about this product was the TCL customer service. On two occasions I found it necessary to call their customer service line. Both times the call was answered quickly and my questions were answered accurately. The agent stayed on the phone and walked me through the settings menu and waited until I was sure the problem I was having was resolved.

I was originally looking for an ultrawide 4k monitor to edit video on, but then I thought maybe I should just get a 4k TV and use that as a monitor. At a fraction of the cost of a monitor, it's getting the job done just fine. It's features and quality are basic, but for this price, I can't complain. As a general use TV, it's perfect. It's the perfect size to mount to my wall opposite of my bed, it's bright enough to watch during the day, the colors are alright, and the image is clear enough, even when using it as a monitor and sitting 3 feet away from it. The refresh rate is a standard 60hz, but I still do plenty of gaming and high res video content without any issues. The HDR feature seems to cause problems, so if you're looking for an HDR capable screen, I suggest you stay away from this model. When using HDR on my PC for games, the colors go all wonky. The physical design is nothing fancy, as it's just a standard black bezel all the way around. At this price point, I wouldn't expect any kind of super slick bezeless look, anyway. The Roku TV features are easy to use, and I've had no issues setting up my streaming accounts or navigating the UI. Being a Roku product, the streaming apps are kept up-to-date, so I always have access to my content, no matter what platform I use - Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and even Disney + was available right at launch. Using the Roku app with my phone or tablet is really handy. I mainly use it for private listening, where I can use my headphones connected to my phone to hear the audio, and leave the speakers off. One major downside to this unit is this weird flaw when using external audio, like a sound bar; the audio sometime gets a bad delay when streaming. I have a Vizio sound bar hooked up to the HDMI Arc port on the TV, so it is controlled with the TV remote, but if I pause a show on Netflix, when I hit play, it desyncs, and I have to turn the soundbar off and on again to fix it. Overall, this TV is worth getting if you want something big and high resolution on a budget.

STAY AWAY - 2 TVs with dead backlight in 16 months
9 July 2023

I got this TV in March 2022. By January 2023, the backlight had failed and the TV had a permanent dark gray screen. TCL’s suggested remedies didn’t work, and don’t seem to work for anyone, based off of these reviews. I had a Geek Squad warranty, so they came out to attempt to fix, to no avail. So, Best Buy ordered me a new one that arrived mid-February 2023. Here we are in July 2923, less than 5 MONTHS (!!!) later and the gray screen is back. 2 of these done in less than 16 months. Don’t ever buy this TV. To save yourself the trouble, you light as well stay away from TCL altogether.

We had sound but no picture. We conveniently had just passed the warranty period with the manufacturer, so we decided to bite the bullet and head to Best Buy to buy a new TV.May of 2019 we went shopping and they had the new TCL 55" 55s405 4K so we thought why not, as we only paid $350 on the other one as it was during Black Friday and we never write off anything without giving it a second shot. So we bought another TCL.Jump forward to today exactly around the same time frame as before, 1 year and a couple of months and came home from work and this TV has the exact same problem. Black screen with sound. After researching even more we noticed this is SUPER common with TCL brand TV's. The LED's are faulty. So here we are using our 32" Samsung until we can afford another TV.Will not buy TCL again. Would strongly advise avoiding this brand. I know it's tempting because at the price range for a smart TV with a large screen they seem cheap but in just over a year you will have a 300-500$ 55"-60" paperweight.

Unbelievable HDTV for the Price!
25 June 2019

Ten days ago, as my wife sat down to watch the news with her first cup of coffee, she turned on our 7 year old 60” Plasma HDTV only to find that, although the sound was great, there was absolutely no picture. I tried everything that I could from unplugging the TV for about 30 minutes and then plugging it back in to supposedly reset. I also tried playing a DVD, playing the Roku and playing the Over-the-Air TV. Nothing worked! So, I went to the internet and after a bit of searching, I noticed that our problem was well known and supposedly easy to fix for an electrical engineer.Fortunately, a few weeks earlier, we replaced an old bedroom 24” HDTV with a TCL 32” 3-Series HD LED ROKU Smart TV and have been very impressed with the picture, sound and functionality. ... MoreTen days ago, as my wife sat down to watch the news with her first cup of coffee, she turned on our 7 year old 60” Plasma HDTV only to find that, although the sound was great, there was absolutely no picture. During my search for the 32” HDTV, I ran across the TCL 55" 4-Series 4K UHD ROKU Smart TV (55S405) and would have bought it then simply because of its price and user reviews. But, unfortunately, it would not fit the space allocated for the TV.So, I came to Best Buy’s website to see if the TCL 55” was still available and in-stock. To my surprise, not only was the TCL in-stock, it was on sale at a $70 savings from when I last looked. So, without a second thought, my wife drove to Best But, bought the TCL, took it home and had it up and running in less than an hour.Setting up the TV was fairly easy, the picture is excellent, the sound is quite good using only the build-in speakers and using the remote is easy if you’ve previously used a ROKU remote.Even though the TCL is 5” smaller than our plasma, the difference is barely noticeable. And, considering that this TV cost 30% of what our plasma cost and the picture is as good, if not better, than the plasma and the added functionality, we consider this one of our “best buys”!
