This product contains some things that are definitely good for sleep: magnesium and valerian, and some others that I am unsure about. It is oddly shaped, but that does not bother me. What does concern me is that this product contains two things that may actually be harmful to the wrong populations of people. First, it contains about 37% of your daily recommended allowance of iron. This is not a good thing for non-vegetarian men who are not regularly donating blood. But, worse, it contains licorice. Licorice is a delicious candy, but licorice extract actually has a very significant effect in the human body: it increases excretion of potassium and it can raise blood pressure. The active ingredient that causes this is glycyrrhizinic acid. I did not have time to study the literature to see if this is a significant amount, but if you have any kind of kidney disfunction or are at all hypertensive--which is a population of people that may well overlap with people who have difficulty sleeping, I would not take this supplement. Not recommended for those reasons.

I'm reviewing the Swisse Ultiboost Sleep Supplement. This formula contains natural sources of Magnesium, Valerian root, Licorice, & Hops. It also contains Poria and Anemarrhena plus a fair amount of Iron. Poria, or China Root (or Fu Ling) is a fungus used in TCM which has a diuretic effect but can be purportedly used to treat insomnia, restlessness, fatigue, tension, nervousness. The Anemarrhena is another ingredient used in TCM used to treat health disorders related to excessive heat and dryness plus, in this case, relieve nervous tension. I've used Valerian in the past as a calming aide - something to take the edge off frazzled nerves and to reduce nervous tension. I am rating this four stars because it does a good job at promoting relaxation. By doing so, it indirectly promotes sleep. I didn't find that it stimulated sleep in my case but I suppose it would facilitate sleep in cases where the insomnia is caused by excessive tension or worry. Overall - no adverse effects from using this. It calms, similar to Kava Kava mixed with Valerian root, without any groggy feelings afterward. As a tension relief agent, I'd recommend it.

I combine these with a one a day magnesium tablet cos I’ve heard good things about doing that. Can be hit and miss though but I’d still definitely recommend and my review will explain why that’s the case. Doesn’t make you sleepy but it does relax you and enable you to fall asleep if that makes sense. Some times it does nothing but other times it works super well where not only do I sleep significantly longer than normal but I also feel sleepy a bit when I wake up and I can actually roll over and go back to sleep again. Which normally I can NEVER do that, like ever as not only am I a light sleeper where when I wake up that’s it I’m up like a shot and there’s no going back to sleep but I’m also an extremely short sleeper as well. While not perfect these are EXTREMELY ... MoreI combine these with a one a day magnesium tablet cos I’ve heard good things about doing that. I hate swallowing pills, so I was dismayed at how big these are, and you need to take 2 for the dose. So I knock off a star for that. But otherwise, I think these pills are great. They have ingredients for long-term sleep problems (iron and magnesium deficiency can cause sleep problems) as well as short-term, like valerian which is an herb that will knock you out. I'm not a physician, but I don't think any of these ingredients are habit-forming, or even harmful at all if you take them every day. I think you might want to be careful if you are also taking an iron supplement, because you can overdose on iron, and there is a lot of iron in these. Other than the size, I think these are great. I wish they were chewable! But basically I recommend these.
These don't knock you out, but it does seem to help me get to sleep and stay asleep a little bit more. I'm a huge insomniac, so any help is welcomed. This will probably be more effective for other people. The biggest downside is how these things look. Seriously, they look like cockroaches. I can't help but imagine that I'm swallowing roaches every time I take them. I usually swallow pills easily... and these slip down my throat with no problem... but I gagged on these the first time I took them because I couldn't get past how they look. It's probably just me, but if you have any problems with bugs, you might want to look at something else. Seriously, the color and shape looks like the backside of a bug that I obviously trigger over. Ugh. Still, they helped. So I've ... MoreThese don't knock you out, but it does seem to help me get to sleep and stay asleep a little bit more. I'm a huge insomniac, so any help is welcomed. Swisse Ultiboost promotes a deeper sleep for me. When taking this supplement, I don’t wake up in the night. Also, after taking Ultiboost, I relax more dully before bed. I also take melatonin, but I am taking this first before bed to relax and it works, then I take melatonin. You may know, Valerian smells funny, so don’t be surprised at the smell. But, Valerian and hops really do help you relax and ease anxiety. Anxiety can hit me at bedtime when my brain is overloaded with thoughts. This oroduct helps me relax and when I go to sleep-I notice I stay asleep and feel better in the morning. Also, avoid caffeine after 3 pm if you want to sleep better, and try this if you have nighttime anxiety.
Without Ultiboost Sleep from Swisse my sleeping patterns have been up and down, not sleeping and staying up all night, waking after only a couple of hours or sleeping in the afternoon. Swisse Ultiboost Sleep has given me my life back as I am sleeping soundly for 8 to 9 hours at night and not waking up until the morning. I feel refreshed and able to go about my daily life like a normal person. I highly recommend this product.
Its worthwhile to understand how herbal sleep formulas such as this fit into the market. Something like ambien works right away. You take it before bed and it knocks you out for a period of time after just one dose. There are serious downsides to that sort of pharmaceutical approach as the body can become addicted to ambien after just 3 days. Herbal formulas can take 2 - 3 weeks to build up in your system to a therapeutic level. Taking it once before bed and expecting an ambien type knock out is not realistic. But once given time to reach a therapeutic level in your body, herbal formulas can be very helpful, and without the risks associated with things like ambien. In that light, when taken over a period of time, this sleep formula worked quite well for me. This is ... MoreIts worthwhile to understand how herbal sleep formulas such as this fit into the market. Its worth giving this Swisse formula a try to see if it works for you.
Swisse Ultiboost Sleep Supplement - Herbal Based Sleep Aid - Natural & Restful Sleep - Valerian, Magnesium, & Licorice (120 Tablets) I really think these help more than melatonin. I first tried 1/2 tablet (I used a pair of scissors to cut one in half) about 20 minutes before I was ready to go to sleep. I wanted to try just little to make sure I didn't have any weird reactions. I felt pleasantly drowsy. So right before I went to bed, I took the other half. This worked better than I could imagine. It could be all in my head, but HEY, whatever works at this point. I have had insomnia for years and look for anything that might help me sleep. These are all herbs that have been used for years, so I feel safe trying them. These pills are one of the most unique looking pills that I've taken. I think the shape was done to maximize the size of the pill while also increasing the chance of it going down the throat easily. These pills are very slippery. The first pill, in fact, slipped out of my hands onto the floor. This is I guess good when it is in the throat, but can make handling these pills tricky. As far as whether or not these pills work - these pills appear to work for me as long as I'm not wide awake. It helps to give a deeper level of sleep. And in the morning I'm a little more groggy than usual. These natural sleep aids, from my experience, are not necessarily as powerful as the ones makes from chemicals. But since it is natural, I think it is probably safer in the long run.
