It is currently 2019 and this guy is still a beast. Now a lot of streaming apps are no longer supported but if you are buying this device you should already know it is limited in online functions. That being said let me do a quick rundown. Google chrome and play store work perfectly, the most recent firmware update enabled 3D blu ray playback , the device can side load apps , and Android OS functions are all great. I bought this device for helping me with my upstart eBay business , I needed something that could use the web on the TV , test blu ray and DVDs for functionality , and be able to take advantage of everything android does with the added media formats supported DO NOT TRY TO ASK SONY FOR ANY HELP. I am sharing this because I dont want anyone else to go ... MoreIt is currently 2019 and this guy is still a beast. I am sharing this because I dont want anyone else to go throug this debacle when they buy this device, information is scarce on the model and what I am posting is the information I couId not find. I purchased mine with out the official remote based off of the Sony manual and support pages indicating most mini keyboards work to control the device. My unit got locked up durning setup and I could not complete setup until I paired the official remote to it. Sony claimed , ( I posted screen caps ) that this is the ONLY blu ray / DVD player in the HISTORY OF SONY that requires the original official remote to complete startup and without that remote , (this is Sony's words) completely useless and will never be able to complete setup. They also said that this information was never disclaimed to the public and is not found in either the manual or the Sony support site. Sony even told me to return it because it will NEVER function without this one specific remote. Well that's all false information and I found a way to complete setup by enabling my Insignia HDMI-CEC feature and it instantly completed setup. Sony refused to tell me any information to trouble shoot this problem , their first and only answer was like I said above. With that being said this device works perfectly with complete functionality ( aside from streaming apps and a few other unsupported apps ) using a Rii I8+ mini keyboard. Sony also told me this keyboard would not control the device. Now this guy works and it is hands down the best piece of equipment that fit my needs. If you love Android OS, need a blu ray / DVD player that can browse the web , connect to a home media network (offline) , play any format of file you throw at it , and works flawlessly this is for you. Last thing I have to say is this device is now the sole piece of equipment I use for running my eBay business , it is perfect and a extremely usefull tool

This is not a bad device. The problem is that what it was supposed to be was a failure. It could have been incredible, but the greed on the part of the content providers killed that potential. I understand their position. I would not want to have Google getting in between my content and my customers either. But that's how it worked out and the early adopters got hosed. No doubt. That said, since its disastrous release, the Sony's Google TV is now a GREAT media streamer from your PC or your Mac. You can do Blu-Ray, you can do 3D Blu-Ray (yep!), you can use it as a DLNA client, you can use it as a Plex client. It handles the obligatory NetFlix as well as Amazon Prime Instant Video (though it's a PITA using the browser for that feature, it needs an App). You can throw ... MoreThis is not a bad device. Then there's the selection of Android Apps. They're not great, but they are there. I have a small HTPC for my home and this is just as good for 99% of everthing plus the remote makes things a lot easier to navigate with. If you're looking to be a cord cutter....this is a good device to be looking at. You won't get VuDu (which is disappointing) and it's only fair to admit that this is a dead-end device. Sony has been VERY good at updating it, but there won't be any more Intel Atom-based Google TVs after this one and the Logitech Revue, so don't expect development to go much further. But again, look at it for what it is now. Not what you wish it would be and not what it was originally supposed to be. You'll find that it's a pretty nice device for the price.

Works Great! The unit was used but in excellent condition. Very easy to hookup and very easy to operate. This product also is a blue ray player that plays bule-ray disc, CDS, and DVDS. I can surf the internet, watch netflix, fox news, Motor Trend, Read my emails, listen to radio stations, check weather conditions, and more. Since my son has purchased one and loves it. The key board is the right size and fits in the palms of your hand just right. Moving the pointer with the thumb control is a little difficult and takes a little getting use to. Keeping the thumb control is a must and must be cleaned quite often for proper operation.

My husband asked for a blu-ray player for xmas. i researched a lot as i usually do and came across this one with the internet tv and just reading all the different things you can do with this device I was sold on it immediately! It is an amazing blu-ray player, could see the pores on people's faces in movies! The google tv is so cool, can download apps, like a weather doppler one so we can see storms moving in live, go to youtube and watch videos, check yahoo mail, read the news on any website, all that while using picture in picture to continue watching tv while playing around on the internet. Really worth it. The remote is very cool, has a full keyboard and a few reviews i read mentioned the buttons being small for men to type on, but my husband who has big hands ... All our other devices are black so it is noticeable, but did not deter me from buying and would recommend to anyone who wants long lasting entertainment using a variety of methods and you will not be disappointed!!!!
The product itself is outdated, and many of the features can't be used anymore. The remote control and the design and color of the product was the selling point for me. I got a Sony Blu-ray player with a sleek design and an awesome remote. If you have a smart TV, you won't miss out on any of the features not supported anymore, as you'll have them available on your smart TV.
I am very happy with this product. I haven't had any issues with the unit and I was able to connect to my DSL wireless router allowing me to surf the net in my living room without a laptop or tablet. I've only used a few apps but they work fine. The Netflix interface is just like the PS3's so I am used to it and it streams with no buffering beyond the start. The Blu-ray player works very well and I like how it uses Gracenote to display the cover of DVD/Blu-ray I am playing. Surround sound through my Pioneer receiver is no problem. I do have it integrated with my Cox cable box and that works okay. I don't have a DVR, so I am not using that full functionality. Initial set up for this part was a little tricky, just pay attention to what you select and take your time. The remote/keyboard is very good. It takes some getting used to, though. The QWERTY buttons are small, but spaced out well enough to avoid 'fat fingering' too many keys. Surfing the net is a little slower because the touchpad on the upper right is pretty small. Yet, I am still able to navigate and actually order stuff online. Disk player controls work fine and I was able to use the IR sensors(included with the unit) to control my cable box and receiver using this remote. So far, I have no real complaints and I am very impressed with its performance. Granted, it's not the perfect TV/cable/internet interface unit (that has yet to come), but this Google TV unit is keeping me happy until then.
This Sony Google is not worth the money!!! I have contacted Sony many times and they just don't care about their customers. You cannot go on so many sites, example USA Network, SYFY, Hulu, and many many more. I bought this unit for the reason of watching TV and other stuff, and I can't.. The reason why? is that most other sites will have their plug-ins and SONY cannot download them.. There is No hard drive for that. So what good is this unit when the majority of web pages that cannot play!! This is so frustrating. I have Comcast and I can't even use Xfinity to watch anything! Comcast has their plug-in and when I contacted them, Like Sony, sorry. So I do NOT recommend this unit for the web to watch Television or movies. Thumbs down for Sony & Google! I rate this a 4 ... This whole unit is a complete waste of space! Seriously this was one of the worst designed pieces of junk ever put on the market. This was not Sony's well executed attempt at getting into that market, it was feeble, quick entry to compete with other similar items on the market. The poor design will offer great features like the inability to search literally anything on the internet because it isn't compatible with any browsers and they've stopped making updates for it years ago! Newer streaming channels are not available because....well as I said it is old, outdated and they do not make updates for it. It works as a DVD/bluray player, but come on, this isn't 2015 anymore. I don't recommend it, I wouldn't buy it and it is neither a cheaper nor better option over ... MoreThis whole unit is a complete waste of space! I really like this Sony Blu-Ray Disc Player with Google TV. You will need a Google account. You can download most of your favorite Android apps like you can on your Android phone. However (as of the date of this review) you can not download the #1 favorite app: Angry Birds. When you receive the player you will need to download the latest update (HoneyComb) to get the Android Market to download apps. You will get Google's web browser: Chrome with it. You will use the Google TV part so much that might forget about the blu-ray disc function. To get the device to function properly you will need either a wireless or wired high-speed internet connection. This device functions with your cable or satellite provider. You also get Netflix and Amazon's Instant Video service. However, no Vudu. You can also watch your favorite YouTube! videos. You also view photos that upload to your Google+ account right on your tv.
Very easy to setup (interface guides you thru each step). It has tons of interfaces that I have yet to explore. Netflix interface is pretty good. Google's chrome browser works well and the built-in mouse on the remote works well. Very well designed and box with lots of useful interfaces. Brings up high def you tube videos as well and all works well streaming directly off my wireless-n router. Now, if google can provide access to the apps marketplace thru the google tv, this would be a killer product. Well worth the price, especially if you already own a plasma or lcd tv and need to add this function. Include blueray player as well which adds value when comparing to current version of apple tv.
