Contrast is incredible...almost best viewed on HDR monitor. Sharpness is astounding...never counted so many eyelashes. Miraculously light and compact-this can't be understated, as this makes my A7rIIIa light and portable with amazing, no compromise, image quality. At the same time, I don't want to overstate the compactness because I would absolutely still buy this lens if it was a pound heavier for IQ alone. It's been a while since a lens made me this profoundly satisfied. Really scratches the itch!!!

This is a very discrete and small 35mm lens for my Sony a7CR. It is sharp and small and allows me to take photos without the fanfare of using my other larger lenses. This lens along with the Sony 24mm f/2.8 are perfect for travel and produce great photos even when cropped due to the large size of the sensor. I highly recommend this 35mm lens.

My go-to 35mm lens is a manual focus Zeiss Loxia f/2, but for a compact, lightweight, auto-focus alternative for travel and street photography, you can't beat the Sony Sonnar FE 35mm f/2.8 lens. As others have noted, there can be slight vignetting and/or distortion in some situations, but these are easily correctible with the available Adobe Lightroom profile. The Sony 35mm 2.8 build quality is quite good and very similar to the excellent Sony FE 55mm 1.8. For me, lenses are like paint brushes and the Sony FE 35mm 2.8 allows me to think less about the science of what I'm doing and more about the art. Whether attached to my a7II or a7RII, it's presence is low profile and allows me to subtly capture images without announcing my presence. While I have larger and more expensive pieces of glass, this humble little 35mm lens reminds me most of what attracted me to the compact but highly capable Sony a7 format to begin with. And while this optic it is not perfect in every aspect, thereby getting 4 stars instead of 5, it is an ideal companion for street and travel photography.

This is my second time with the 35mm f/2.8 Sony Sonnar. The first was with my Sony A7R IV, and I sold it to buy the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM.The Sonnar image quality is very good, though not as good as the GM lens.So when I got a Sony A7C for a bicycle tour, I purchased the Sonnar again. It's an outstanding lightweight/compact travel combo, provided you like the 35 mm focal length (I love it) and provided you can live without any zoom function (I can). Focus is quick and accurate. The tapered-snout lens hood allows me to confidently leave the lens cap off.I bicycled about 225 miles and walked several dozen more in the tropical heat of Cambodia in November 2023 with this camera/lens on my hip in a small Lowepro SH 100 ii bag. It's a compromise for me as pixel peeper but I never would have carried the full-size camera kit with me on such a trip.
What I like: Light, super small and compact. When placed on my A7rii, the entire camera and lens fit into the palm of my hand. Easily fits in a large coat pocket or small bag. 35mm is a good focal length for travel and street photography. I found it a little short for portraits, but there is so much resolution, cropping still yields very detailed photos. I found the lens very sharp, even wide open. Color and tone of photos is very pleasing. I was also surprised at how shallow depth of field I could actually get with this lens. Pleasing bokeh. Software adequately addresses vignetting. Hood and lens cap design is brilliant and adds to its compactness. Having to hold down the AF/MF button on the back of the camera to activate the MF is not convenient, nor is diving into the Menu system. I think Sony has heard enough complaints that the latest batch of new FE lenses have come with a AF/MF switch. Bottom Line: Should be at the top of the list for any photographer looking to make their camera as small, light and as portable as possible while delivering sharp, beautiful images.
I just purchased this to replace the same lens that I purchased in 2015. Mounted on a Sony a7rii it makes for a great combination. The lens is very sharp, even at f2.8. It focuses quickly. Great for street photography. Mounted on a Sony a6000 it makes for a standard lens with lightning quick focusing and since it is cropped, everything is sharp corner to corner. But, after six plus years I took it out for an important family event and the lens focusing motor began making noises and it had intermittent focusing issues, although the manual focusing function still worked. Since I loved the results from this lens I purchased a replacement, almost cheaper than repairing the lens.Since modern lenses are more mechanically complicated and I should accept this, but it was ... MoreI just purchased this to replace the same lens that I purchased in 2015. Holy hell this lens is awesome!! I was extremely skeptical considering the price tag and specs of this lens. But people raved about it's color and quality so I risked it. So far, it has outperformed my expectations by quite a bit. The color I get from this lens is GORGEOUS. Slightly warm temperature, beautiful reds, clean whites, astounding sharpness. I put up some RAW SOOC images online and the general consensus from my followers was "WOW!"Out of the box, I couldn't believe how light weight it was. It feels like a pack of gum. While some might be really turned off by that fact, lightweight is exactly what I wanted for travel and family photos. I'm more than okay with plastic! The hood is strange. While some might be really turned off by that fact, lightweight is exactly what I wanted for travel and family photos. I'm more than okay with plastic! The hood is strange. It doesn't flare out, it actually encases the lens and leaves a small hole where the glass is. Find a photo of it online so you can see what I mean. It does a good job protecting the lens but... it adds quite a bit of depth to the lens so I don't use it. Instead, I got a low profile filter to safeguard the glass and I won't use the hood unless I HAVE to. Btw, the hood fits fine with a 49mm filter on at the same time :)Without the hood, it doesn't stick out that far past the width of my a7riii's. The OP/TECH "shortie" neoprene case fits the camera and lens very well if you're looking to toss it into a backpack or carry-on.The bokeh is what you'd expect from a 2.8. The sharpness exceeded my expectations though! I put this 35mm on one a7riii and my G Master 35mm 1.4 on the other a7riii. I preferred the color of the 35 2.8 but the bokeh on the 35 1.4 is obviously KING so I will be keeping both, no surprise there. The 2.8 will be for videography, travel, street photography, etc. It's has a very specific use and it excels at that very well. I'm hooked!!
I recently upgraded from APSC and all the small compact APSC lenses - looking for something compact, I came across this 35mm Sonnar... aside from being compact it's a Zeiss and brings along all of that Zeiss character. Is it perfect, no. But perfect is overrated. I was looking for character, and I got it. Sharp, contrasty images that pop. This one is a keeper. I also considered the new Sony 40mm which is also compact but based on reviews I saw, it was just OK... not a bad word spoken of the 40mm but also nothing special. Where's the fun in that?
What I like: - Extremely small and lightweight. The smallest full frame FE lens on the market. With this lens on I can fit my A7rii in a large coat pocket. - I found the lens sharp, even wide open - Build quality is very good. Manual Focus ring is knurled and a good resistance. - Quick Autofocus - Lens hood is clever and only adds to its compact design What I dont like: - Awfully expensive for a prime lens that is not very fast (only 2.8) and doesnt feature a AF/MF switch or a Focus Hold button - The 35mm focal length is a bit odd. Not quite long enough or fast enough to be an ideal portrait lens, not quite wide enough for landscapes and cityscapes. The low-down: If your looking for a lens that will make your camera as small and compact as possible, this is the lens ... MoreWhat I like: - Extremely small and lightweight. The low-down: If your looking for a lens that will make your camera as small and compact as possible, this is the lens you are looking for. Excellent build and sharp throughout. On the otherhand, if size isnt that important to you, then I would look at a faster prime lens or the 24-70mm f2.8 G-Master. Some people love the 35mm focal length saying its the best of both worlds (wide and zoom). Im afraid I lean a little more glass half empty. Not quite wide enough for most landscapes I take, nor do I find it ideal for taking portraits. When small and inconspicuous is important, I throw on this lens, but otherwise its my G-Master or a faster prime.
I bought this as the first lens of my Sony system after switching from canon, which was my AF solution when my hassalblad / phase setup was too slow for a shoot.Basically my setup before was shoot everything with a hasselblad with iq260 and then if it was really fast focus or needed weatherproofing or light weight I’d bring a canon with a 24-70.I got the Sony a7riii and this 35mm f2.8 to have in the kit when I needed it, and I’ve basically put my medium format system away permanently as the image quality is so good from this little camera and lens, why drag around anything else. This lens is great and having shot most of my career with either film or digital backs you have to keep at 100 iso, and an MF leaf shutter lens that goes to f4 wife open, I’ve never ... MoreI bought this as the first lens of my Sony system after switching from canon, which was my AF solution when my hassalblad / phase setup was too slow for a shoot.Basically my setup before was shoot everything with a hasselblad with iq260 and then if it was really fast focus or needed weatherproofing or light weight I’d bring a canon with a 24-70.I got the Sony a7riii and this 35mm f2.8 to have in the kit when I needed it, and I’ve basically put my medium format system away permanently as the image quality is so good from this little camera and lens, why drag around anything else. This lens is great and having shot most of my career with either film or digital backs you have to keep at 100 iso, and an MF leaf shutter lens that goes to f4 wife open, I’ve never seen the need to pay or carry the extra weight of a 1.8 or 1.4 lens. The lens performs amazingly well especially since it’s the weight of a column of ritz crackers, if you are concerned about vignetting you can make a custom .lcc profile in capture 1 to correct it but I never have, haven’t noticed that much vignetting. This lens is on my camera 99% of the time, especially since I don’t have to take it off to fit it in any carrying bag/roller
