In 2015, I was an early adopter of mirrorless cameras, switching from a canon setup to the first Sony a7. However these cameras became larger and larger with each successive generation, defeating one of my primary reasons for changing to mirrorless. I tried the Fuji XT3 and while I loved Fuji colors, I missed the full frame sensor. I bought the Sony a7C2 for a trip to Italy and it did not disappoint! With the small kit tens, it was a wonderful camera to carry while traveling and it produced some beautiful images. I have larger and better lenses at home, but that little kit lens held up just fine for my casual shooting needs. I bought an eye cup that attaches to the hotshoe which makes the small viewfinder nicer to use. I am loving this small powerhouse of a camera!

I am a solo shooter making video content and also considering RE photography, so I wanted to upgrade from a purely video body (ZV-E1) to a more hybrid shooter with higher sensor MPs.It's such a balance, but I think the A7C2 did it. Just enough MPs to shoot detailed stills, and the right video specs (I personally don't need 120 fps). The compact body I value when bopping around. On top of that, includes the new AI processing, an aperture dial, viewfinder, and I was too excited. Even the silver top option made me aesthetically happy. A FE like this, at this price point, was a slam dunk.

I was a little skeptical of getting this camera but after seeing some rave reviews I decided to order it. My first impression was how little this camera felt but had a slight weight to it and the body has gained a little bulk which is nice. I had to study the features for about a couple of days before I was confident in using this camera. The menu system is quite improved from my older A6500, or A7r2 and the battery is bulkier and longer lasting. The viewfinder seems ok though many have said they didn't like it but it seems bright and large enough for my eyes. When holding it my little pinky needs a little support so I'm getting a grip extension which is available everywhere. The first set of photos I took look spectacular, very sharp images right off the bat. The only time it will be awkward is when using larger lenses but its a give and take at best and shouldn't hold me back. I've sold the A6500 and will be selling my A7r2 also and getting the A7r5 as my primary camera. Also the autofocus is much, much improved and you can almost not take a sharp picture when doing it right. I'm very happy with this camera and can't wait to take it out again! Sony has done it again! Also getting it from B&H was a nice experience, no drama, arrived quickly and everything went smoothly.

I have purchased this camera after having purchased the A7c. For travel, I bring both cameras with the 28-60 f4 lens and 40mm f2.5 for the street. Image quality exceptional, autofocus pinpoint and accurate. I sold my Leica ME 240 to purchase this camera and am so glad I did. The Leica was slow, clunky, and not a good street camera. The Leica lenses that I have give me better images on this camera imho than the Leica. Finally, I own the Fuji x100v which I had preordered when it was released and enjoyed it and then preordered the Fuji x100vi. After comparing images and autofocus capabilities with the x100v and realizing the Sony a7cii with the 40mm f2.5 is only 6 ounces heavier and had much superior iq I was so happy that B&H was unable to fill my order at the time. Third full day using the camera and with less than 2000 shutter clicks, the camera freezes when I press the C1 button a few times. I mapped C1 to change the AF type. When I cycle through internal screen shows vertical lines of colors, the back screen goes black. No buttons function. Turning the camera off does nothing - the internal screen keeps the color line display on. Removing and replacing the battery resets the camera. I'm starting the process of dealing with Sony about this (I'm outside my return window).I've loved my a7iv and a6500, and really disappointed with this one.
I've wanted a more compact full-frame body for a while for travel purposes and was super excited when the A7C II came out. I currently have A7 III body, and it has served me very well, but when the A7C II came out with better specs in a smaller body, I had to try it out.The overall experience has improved greatly: menu, app to download photos to the phone, AI auto-focus, ease of firmware updates. The auto-focus and response time to capture shots is super zippy, and I am able to use all the Sony/Sigma E-mount glass that I already have.Really perfect for family and travel photography and video.
This is my first Sony camera. I sold my 15 year old APS-C Nikon DSLR and then bought this camera. By going to a mirrorless camera, I now have a smaller, lighter camera, with a much larger sensor. Mostly I shoot pictures of my kids, nature, etc. I’m not a professional and I’m sure a professional would not find this camera as capable as the A7iv or other more powerful (and expensive) bodies. There are several things I’ve noticed about this camera:1. Autofocus seems great. It’s definitely a step up from what I had before. It picks up my kids faces well and can track them as they run around.2. Even with 33 MP images, the camera can rattle off a series of fast shots without any issue.3. There’s many ways to change the same settings. Even with 33 MP images, the camera can rattle off a series of fast shots without any issue.3. There’s many ways to change the same settings. It’s great that there’s a touchscreen, a function menu, custom buttons, custom menus, and then the full settings. There are so many settings that it can be overwhelming, but it’s great that you can put the ones you want within reach.4. The back screen as a touchscreen is great, but the quality of the screen is underwhelming.5. Having an electronic viewfinder is great, especially when you can see a preview of captured images right in the viewfinder. It’s not the biggest viewfinder, but it seems big enough to be effective and usable.6. There are plenty of dials. I love that I can put shutter speed on a back dial, aperture on the front, and ISO on yet another back dial.7. There’s a lot of settings and the manual doesn’t really explain them well. I’m trying to learn as much as I can to make full use of the features, but it’s a challenge.8. Apple doesn’t yet support the RAW format for these cameras. I’m mostly using Lightroom, so this isn’t a huge issue.
This is [almost] exactly what I wanted the ⍺7C to be! They've made some subtle but useful updates to the body. The grip is slightly larger with better material. I wished they had borrowed the one from the ⍺6700, but this one is better than the OG ⍺7C. Having one addition custom button really helps streamline my workflow being able to customize the Exposure dial, oh, and FINALLY adding a freaking FRONT DIAL is my favorite update (and maybe 4K 60p is second...although it's limited to the crop, but was expected as it's the same sensor as the ⍺7IV, still counting it as a win).Overall, this is a nice but not essential upgrade from the ⍺7C. I am completely happy with this camera!
There are plenty of reviews already that cover all technical details. I will limit this review only to my (limited) comparison of Sony A7Cii with Nikon Z6ii. I took over a 1000 side by side pictures with both to better understand what cameras do right or wrong.First, obvious thing. Sony AF is much better, especially when aided by subject recognition. Though I found that the only focusing mode really usable is AFC with center point tracking. Nikon AF modes are more convenient, tracking can be enabled with a button in AFC or AFS. Sony tracking is more sticky.Sony has an excellent pixel resolution due to weak AA filter, better than Z6ii. That also means Sony is prone to moire when subjects have high frequency patterns. It happens more often than I would like.Sony still struggles with colors. I'm always using RAW processing in LR. In particular orange skin is still a problem. But unlike the previous models I found it wasn't hard to fix it in LR. Nikon is mostly looking just right, no correction necessary.Sony AWB is a weak point. Both cameras were set on AWB-White. Still Sony almost always resulted in too warm WB. In daylight that wasn't a big problem as it was pretty consistently slightly warmer than ideal. But in CFL, incandescent, LED, mixed lights Sony AWB was very flaky. It could drastically change between two pictures taken at same time at the same place. It can be fixed in LR, but it's a lot of work if you need to process 1000 pictures. Nikon was pretty consistent and rarely required WB adjustment.Similar things I observed with light metering. Sony practically always underexposes using evaluative metering. It wouldn't be bad if it were consistent, but unfortunately every picture requires its own correction, sometimes as much a stop or two.Bottom line, Sony A7Cii is a very capable camera, producing excellent pictures, but it requires a lot more post-processing efforts than Nikon.
The A7Cii raw file issues I experienced before were mostly due to Lightroom. I'm now using recently released DXO PR3.7. It changes everything. The underexposure problems are mostly gone, perhaps due to better lens profiles and better raw conversion. The noise and sharpening are significantly better. DXO color profiles are also much better than Adobe. It now looks like a totally different camera.
