Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Photo Package

(20 reviews)

Sky-Watcher's Star Adventurer Motorized Mount Astro Package is an easy-to-use equatorial mount that offers accurate tracking capabilities for astronomy and astrophotography. With a simple turn of a dial, select from Lunar, Solar, or Star tracking modes, or four speeds from 0.5x to 12x if the modes are not exactly right. An integrated polar alignment scope with an included illuminator help the alignment process in either the Northern or Southern Hemispheres, and a date dial compensates for star drift over time to extend the usability of the scope. In addition to standard stargazing or astrophotography, the mount is also ideally suited for star-scape photos and has a time-lapse mode. A 2.5mm three-segment stereo jack is integrated into the mount and gives the mount the ability to control a compatible DSLR's shutter release for long-exposure or time-lapse photography. Pre-programmed intervals, based on the tracking mode selected, optimize the exposure times for the subjects selected. The Star Adventurer mount features a Vixen-style dovetail saddle for compatible accessories and optical tube assemblies (OTAs). It has both 3.8"-16 and 1/4"-20 tripod mounts to fit on most astronomical, photo, or video tripods and is offered here without a tripod, OTA, or counterweights.

The Sky Watcher Adventurer has been a fantastic purchase for me. I bought the Astro package and added the EQ mount and Counter-Weight kits. This has allowed me to take very nice photos with larger lenses in a safe manner. The Sky Watcher includes a polar scope and that has allowed me to achieve very good polar alignment on a consistent basis. I am taking 60 second exposures or more with a 135mm lens and the results have be great - nice round stars and no trails. A big improvement from my home-made barn door tracker.I can see myself adding a small refractor to this set up in the future!

I have been used to carrying a Celestron LCM base and hand control with me on trips. It has worked well, but it has just been too bulky. I decided to try this since it had pretty good distribution and a good reputation. The setup and balancing is very easy. The quality of design and construction is quite good. The tracking quality is also pretty good. I have been using a 200mm lens with a DSLR and getting about 60-65% good images on a session. I miss the ability to use a hand control to do fine position adjustments, but that is just a limitation you have to accept with this product.

I have Celestron Avx mount, but it was such a hassle to carry around. This little guy fits easily into small carrying case, including the counter weight. With the counter weight, it's heavier than I would like, but if I use small m34 camera, I can leave the counter weight at home.I bought Sky-Watcher base with this, but if you have a ball head, you can still adjust to right latitude and polar align. However, I do recommend the base, for it's so much easier to adjust latitude and azimuth as part of polar alignment fine tuning.Construction is solid. I will try guide camera attachment next time when sky is clear - has been cloudy and raining almost 2 weeks in OC, Southern California.I used Gopro for time-lapse video, and it came out pretty nice with cloudy sky.My telescope (ES 102mm cf) is about 7lbs (3.2kg), so I will try this next, for I saw Youtube with heavier telescope mounted ~4kg).

It's a good star tracker
14 August 2017

I'm giving it five stars for what it is. It's a polar aligned star tracker that can also be used for lunar and solar tracking (as advertised). I bought it thinking I'd be able to use it with a D3200 and basic lenses to learn stacking and very basic astrophotography w/out having to set up my large telescope. And, it sort of works for that purpose. I'll be able to learn - at a basic level - as it will allow me to quickly take photos. What I also learned was that to truly take advantage of the rig I'd have to upgrade my camera lenses at a cost that would equal buying a competitively priced triplet or doublet refractor. One feature I really like is that it's small, and therefore portable. Note, be sure to budget extra time as you go through TSA screening as the rig - ... MoreI'm giving it five stars for what it is. My experience has been, though, that the TSA folks love to talk about amateur astronomy once they realize what it is. I'm probably going to look for a 90mm SCT or Mak that could fit on it for a truly useful portable scope. It seems to track very well for optical, and appears pretty good for basic astrophotography. Note... you'll need to invest in the adjustable wedge mount to go between your camera tripod and your rig. A ball mount just won't suffice.

Poor Quality, Weight capacity is wrong, Bad Customer Service
22 August 2018

This is rated at 11 pounds payload. The weight of my 5D MK4 and 100-400 MK2 Canon telephoto lens only 6.2 pounds plus the ball head which put me well with in the 11 pound limit. Even with the counterbalance weight I can't get accurate tracking with this payload. I can get sharp images at 200mm and okay tracking with my 70-200 and 2x at 400mm but that it. Only buy this for wide field astrophotography and with my fast f1.4 and f1.8 astro lenses by Canon and Sigma Art I don't need a tracker so this is pretty much useless unless you want to do medium telephoto work. I purchased this in 2016 and also used it for the August 2017 Solar Eclipse. it worked okay. My biggest issue with this item is poor customer service with Sky-Watcher. I've been trying to get a replacement part from them for over 18 months. The tilt lock on the equatorial wedge mount broke. Very cheap plastic and you really need to crank down hard to take any movement out after you do your polar alignment. Since I could never get a response from customer support I just used a socket wrench to tighten the tilt lock bolt. During my multiple support requests with Sky-Watcher I only got an automated response from Celestron. I was going to buy a bigger Celestron Mount to replace this but now I'm reluctant to buy a Celestron since they apparently own Sky-Watcher.

Sky Watcher Adventure Mount and Latitude Base - Thumbs Up
20 September 2018

This is a great DSLR astronomical equatorial mount in conjunction with the Star Adventure Latitude Base. The polar scope, as is usually the case, requires some patience and light finger pressure to get tight polar alignment, but once there tracking is dead on. Firmware updates are easily done, just follow the instructions in the manual.I did a test run the day I received my Sky Watcher astronomical unit and the stars were round all the way to the corners on the 35 100 seconds exposure control by the Adventure mount. I plan on using this mount at dark sites and for solar eclipses.

Versatile Equatorial Tracker
14 February 2015

In response to the growing popularity of wide field and moderate telephoto astrophotography, there are a variety of "sky tracking" options. I chose the Sky Adventurer because it combined lightweight portability with the versatility for use as a small equatorial mount. It performs superbly in both applications. I have an popular short tube 80mm refractor modified with a two inch focuser. The scope weights 5 pounds, and the Sky Adventurer yields rock steady performance. With adjustable tension bearings on both RA and Dec, this tracking device flawlessly tracks a 5 pound package. When properly polar aligned with it's polar axis scope, I found zero tracking errors on a 30 second exposure with a 400mm lens. All of this comes in a light, compact package. Wonderfully light, portable and solid package!

I was looking to put together a very light observing package for wide field astrophotography. That package had to be light, easy to assemble and solid enough to support both a DSLR and a small refactor like the Stellarvue 60EDS. It also had to be small enough for airline travel.I read with interest the prior reviews here, as well as a review of this unit in the July 2015 Astronomy magazine by Mike Reynolds.I couldn’t be more pleased with the mount, but a key component is the tripod chosen to support it. I’m using the highly recommended Gitzo (GT1542T) Traveler and while expensive makes for a very solid and required foundation. My photographic experience dates back to 1973 but I'm new to astrophotography. After reading lots of reviews and articles on the topic I decided on the Star Adventurer. I'm starting with daytime use, tracking the Sun and doing time lapse pans. That way I will become familiar with the controls. Properly setting the polar orientation is all but impossible during the day but I am getting used to the equipment. In the near future I will be going to areas that have darker skies and shoot starscapes. The accuracy of the motor is uncanny. I can put the Sun or Moon in the frame and come back an hour later and it may be lower in the frame due to my not polar aligning it properly but the left to right accuracy is dead on.
