This is a decent lens. Dramatically better in every way than the Tamron equivalent. Chromatic Aberration is there, but minimal and easily correctable in Lightroom. The same cannot be said for the Tamron. The lens has a solid feel to it, which I quite like. Some would say heavy, but it feels pretty comfortable to me. It's very sharp for a lens at this price point. I bought it as a backup as I managed to break a Pentax 55 - 300 on the sidelines last year and had to finish the game with a totally unsuitable lens. Not gonna let that happen again. My primary lens for this kind of shooting is now the new HD Pentax-DA 55 - 300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE which is significantly more expensive, but also considerably better aside from being slightly slower. The Sigma focuses quickly without a lot of hunting, but if the lens has a negative it's in the autofocus. As I said it focuses quickly, but it stops abruptly with enough of a kick to make it difficult to keep your framing when using it handheld. Was quite a challenge when shooting small birds a couple of days ago as the kick frequently pulled them completely out of frame. Took a bit of getting used to, but I did manage to adjust. All in all, a good buy at that price. Do not, not, not buy the Tamron instead. That lens is awful and is going back.

I am absolutely in love with this sigma lens. I bought this lens because I broke the previous one (exactly the same) I had. The automatic focus motor gear stripped when I manually turned the focus whilst the lens were on auto focus mode. This lens is a very good all round zoom capable from 70mm through 300mm that will focus anywhere from about 7 foot away to 300 - 500yards away. Also has an amazing macro focus feature that makes fabulous photos. I would have chosen to have the macro function available 70 through 300 but there is a limiting switch causing it to operate between 200 and 300 only. Could be quite irritating at times. Looked at a YouTube video of a guy that removed the swith in the lens and made the macro option available through all zoom stages. Think I ... MoreI am absolutely in love with this sigma lens. Looked at a YouTube video of a guy that removed the swith in the lens and made the macro option available through all zoom stages. Think I just discovered what to do with the old sigma lens I have... Lol. The sigma lens is a Absolutely fabulous piece of equipment. I have taken some of the most amazing photos I have ever taken over the last week with this new lens. I accidentally purchased the sigma lens for the sigma camera under the impression it was the one for a nikon mount and when I called adorama customer service they were of huge help with the process to get it sorted before we left on vacation. Because we were planning a holiday trip to Florida and we're leaving in 4 days from the time I discovered that the lens would not fit my camera I contacted adorama in a panicked state... Ha ha. Little did I know how painless the process would be compared to other companies I have used before. The customer service agent suggested that I purchase the correct lens and guaranteed to expedite the dispatch and delivery, also waved the delivery /shipping charges and the lens arrived a day before the date he promised. I returned the wrong lens as per clear instructions from the agent and just as he said, I received an email to confirm goods received in good order and the refund was returned to my debit card a few days later. I am totally satisfied and content with Adorama shopping and customer service and would and have already highly recommended them as a top class company to deal with. One downside to the lens I purchased is that the autofocus motor is quite loud. It has not affected me as if yet but I can remember with the old lens I used that in nature when everything is absolutely quiet and you are trying to secretly snap a deer, the sound have caused them to focus on your hideout. Not the worst because you get beautiful fotos of them in high alert mode focused on your lens... Highly satisfied customer here. Please post my review for other potential customers to understand the services you guys provide to be one I found pleasant. Best regards. Rudi Anderson

Excellent value for the money. Bought this one new primarily for the macro mode. A good auto focus lens that gives a very respectable spread of zoom. The macro mode has a longer minimum focus distance than I am used to but gives a good magnification whilst not crowding the subject. Like Sigma lenses f this type, switching from normal to macro and vice versa needs to be within a certain set of parameters, it took me a little while to get used to it but with time it would become easier. Works well with the older body and the new, generally a very useful lens.

I have used two versions of this lens, one on a Pentax K7 (I bought this new) and the other on a Canon 7D (this was used). The build quality is not as precise as either manufacturers lenses, the one used with the Pentax developed a sticky Macro switch. It would be very difficult to switch over to normal from macro, to the point I never use it for macro. Eventually I bought a Pentax 200mm lens. Both lenses are optically good and you are being picky if you see a difference, but they are there, especially around the edges at max focal length. As for value, you cant knock it, sure the build quality is not the best and it feels lose and clunky in the hand, but in terms of optics you cant beat it on price It is not a waste of money if you buy one!
I did do spec checks in comparison to the Tamron lens of the same specs. The Sigma scored slightly better in one of 5 category. It also rated a lower end Nikon zoom all were basically the same except the Sigma was slightly better in one category. She was looking for the macro feature which the Nikon didn't have. Her previous zoom was the Tamron but she accidently banged it getting out a car and so the auto focus stopped working. She had been pleased with the Tamron lens. I have used Sigma lenses in the past and I thought we'd give it a try and the results have been quite good.
I purchased this lens for use with the forensics photography I do. I needed a stand off macro and this seemed to fit the bill. It works and is satisfactory for that purpose with several caveats. 1. The auto focus flat out doesn't work. It's noisy, tries to focus but won't. I do all my focusing by hand with this lens. 2. the lens is not well made. the fit of the moving components is very rough. 3. The clarity leaves much to be desired. It is sufficient for the purpose I need it for but barely. I dare not take a photograph using this lens without a tripod and several captures. 4. Fstop settings on this lens is very inconsistent. The focal field on F11 in one image will be nice and deep but on the next image will be shallow as if I am using F4 or 5. This is a great lens that is neither too large or bulky or too small. It is effective, sharp, adaptable and great for many situations. Great value. I have adapted it as a manual lens for a Sony E-mount. There is a setting that must be adjusted when you first go to use it, but after that, you have a great manual zoom and focus lens with good light and strength. For a Cannon this would be even better. I found that after playing around, the concern of image stabilization was not a big deal. As a shaky photographer, I was stable with this. The key is focus.
Pleasantly surprised at how crisp the images are from this lens, which I bought for less than 75.99 in as-new refurbished condition from Sigma. I needed to spend an extra 25 for an a-e mount adapter, but it works beautifully with my Sony a6000. Although I have to manually set the aperture on the adapter ring, and focus manually, this really isn't a major problem and I immediately got some nice photos of birds in my garden and spring flowers. I haven't fully explored its macro capabilities yet but a quick try out gave me sharp photos indoors under electric light despite the largest aperture of f4. Very happy to recommend this lens, and the Sigma refurb team, it looks like new. I have had a sigma before, the pics are really sharp...some folks in reviews talking about motor lag, depends on the camera and whether you have a power increase setting which is in the pro full size DSLR newer models. I have A77 II model and had the Sony 55-300 lens. Which was okay; but only half the time sharp images. I did notice in sigma a faster shoot response time in my A77 II. My sony 300 i had for 5 years the aperture stuck in the lens body. So I am replacing it. I dropped my sigma years back; but was more expensive then...but is now more affordable now. just remember your cameras has AF and Shoot at will Focus...just know your settings guys. Some of the comments are just unbelievable about lens on most sites. Qualty feel is also better. i wont go back to Sony on this lens or their top tier either which i found clunky motion; it was better at exposure than being accurate phasing in and out images. The white color body didn't help either...lol
I went to B&H to get a wide angle zoom (and I did, reviewed elsewhere here). While I was there, I asked Scott about a 2x teleconverter for the Pentax K series. But it seems as if Pentax only makes a 1.4x, in which case, why bother?Instead, he said, why not just get a decent low-cost tele-zoom?, and then pulled this thing from the rack. BOOM! It's the perfect lens for my $150 investment. Yep, there are faster lenses, sharper lenses, etc... but not for $150. I bought it.Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge later that afternoon, I gave this lens a Hard Shakedown. Here are my impressions:I have always liked Sigma glass. Back when I shot Pro, I had many Sigma lenses, and every last one of them was tack-sharp, built like a tank, and NEVER-EVER failed me.This lens feels a little-less robust, but not by much. I am no longer in combat conditions when shooting, so if I need to treat it with a little more TLC, no problem. To date, it's been knocked-around moderately, with no ill-effect. The zoom creeps a little bit when walking... know your tools, and deal with it.It's LIGHT, which is a good thing. Because of that, I can carry my entire outfit with ease - I clocked ten miles in NYC that day (Dumbo to Central Park) carrying EVERYTHING, and had no isues. It's SHARP. Waaaaay sharper than I have any right to expect from a $150 tele-zoom. Off the Brooklyn, it sucked-in the Statue of Liberty with aplomb and ease, and rendered images that were just fine for my purposes, despite being handheld in the wind that was blowing. Again, I have used sharper lenses, but nowhere near this price point - I'm talking 10X the price. My only con (lower-case - this is not a CON, just something to be aware of with a $150 lens) - the contrast is just a tad low. On a sunny day, you won't notice. On a cloudy day, bump the contrast just a little, either in the camera or via Photoshop. (In my Pentax K5, I built a a custom exposure mode for it - took me 3 minutes to do. In Photoshop, I built an Action just in case I forgot to set the camera... that took me 37 seconds, and not corrects any Needy photo with a mouse-click.)So, all-told, I'm very happy to have this little lens in my kit. It increases the scope of my photography vastly. I don't shoot sports aside from some drag-racing (which is where I miss my old $9,000 fast glass!), but for what I'm doing now, I love this thing. And a buck-fifty makes it a STEAL.
