Sennheiser HD 400S Headphones

I purchased these headphones at the beginning of this year to use for full-time tertiary study with a significant online component.On the positive side - the sound is great, and my fellow students appear to be able to hear me fine when we're in Zoom tutorials so the mic is good too.On the downside - these are advertised as over-ear headphones, which I wanted for comforts sake as they were going to be used for extended periods, but they aren't. The cavity in the ear-cups on these headphones is only 3.5cm wide so the pads unavoidably sit ON-ear - and I have small ears. The pads themselves are nice and thick and squishy, but still cause significant discomfort after extended wear.

I have these now for about 2 weeks and I am very happy. This was a replacement for another pair of Sennheisers, some HD300 where the headband snapped - so much about Sennheiser being robust.These are straightforward wired headphones, no Bluetooth or noise canceling. You pay for sound, no features or gimmicks.I use the HD400s mainly for music, some movies, and a little gaming and they are suitable for all of this.Sound is very nice on the Focusrite 2i2 Gen 3 audio interface that I generally use them with. The 2i2 has a very nice DAC but the amp is not very powerful. The HD400s also performs very well on my phone or a FiiO M6 DAP.The HD400s feel more robust compared to the HD300 and the sound is better over the entire spectrum. Pros: I've been using sennheiser for years, the quality has gone downhill last few years and the quality of the sound on these are very poor, I use a cheap pair of cx300 II with my Sony music pod, and the sound quality is absolutely amazing the clarity and base is unreal so got this model to use at home for this, and very disappointed, the sound is very poor, little base and no clarity at all, I've had cheap pair of headphones for less then £5 with better sound. Only good point is comfort, and only any good really for listening to the TV, I don't recommend these if your into good quality hifi or studio sound quality as you won't get that from these. Such a disappointment for such a cost, I will stick to my CX300 II's in future best £10 ever spent on earphones. Decent sound (maybe more "on-ear" than over-ear) recommended

My last set of earphones were proper round-the-ear and definitely more comfortable. These Sennheiser 'phones tend to sit on my ears rather than fit comfortably round them.But I must say that they sound OK. I gigged around as a semi-pro musician for some years so sound matters to me. In general, these earphones are decent enough for most purposes. At the price asked, they are a good buy. I recommend them.

Everybody knows the audio quality you're getting when you purchase a pair of Sennheiser headphones -- that wasn't really in question. However, I wear glasses, so I was really looking for a set of headphones that I could wear for long sessions without pain from contact between my ears, glasses, and ear pieces. For me, the HD 400S pass the test. Unfortunately, where I've been slightly let down is in the contact between the top of my head and the headband. It varies, but on average after about 1 hour of wear, the top of my head starts to hurt quite a bit. I bought it on December 31, 2022. The build quality is 10/10. It is the only under $90 over ear headphone in the market. I wait so long from Sennheiser to offer on sale price. Sennhesier does a great seal on box to prove brand new unopened condition that consumer feel confidence to purchase as new. I recommend to buy from staples because they keep this product in stock. So, you don't have worry the damage will caused by shipping and without waiting. The sound is personnel, I won't share in here. But the build quality is really great.

Pros: They're light and comfortable, fold away neatly. Storage bag is a nice touch. They do a reasonable job of attenuating external sounds. The sound quality of the output is certainly serviceable at this price point but I wouldn't say they could be used as monitors in a studio. That said, studio users wouldn't be buying them for that. They are eminently suitable for gaming if you don't mind the lack of a microphone but just want to protect others from your racket.Cons: The lead is, perhaps, slightly too short. Another 0.5m would have been welcomed but that's perhaps down to personal set-up.

Superb sound and quality for the price

I had been using a "cool brand" set (popular with the kids) when they literally fell apart as I took them off. Headband snapped in exactly the same place as my son's had done six months earlier. A quick look at bodge repair vids on YouTube soon showed this was not a rare occurrence.I needed a wired pair as I have a home studio, and Bluetooth phones are unsuitable for sound and music production because of inherent latency issues.I already had the BT version of these (HD 350BT) which I love, and when I saw their wired brothers for under £40 I thought I'd give them a go.I'm amazed at just how good these are. Compared to the cool brand at four times the price, these dance all over them with hobnailed boots.For the money you simply just can't go wrong. Working as I would expect.

I got these primarily to help me hear better in Zoom meetings as I'd often have trouble understanding voice (I'm not young and don't hear as well as I did). I find they solve that issue very well.I've also been using them for streaming services and the sound again is better than listening on speakers.As for the issue in a prior review of no bass... I don't see this at all. I've played around with my sound driver's equalizer and can get very nice sound and the music reproduction is every bit as good as what I'd expect from a lower end headset.These headphones are comfortable enough although after an hour or so I definitely want to remove them for a few minutes.All in all, worth the price. I've had Sennheiser before (decades ago) so I was not disappointed.
