PROS:1. Sculpey is a polymer based clay so it does dry out.2. It is easy to place in the oven (does not require a kiln) to dry and harden and unlike air dry clays it is not prone to cracking....that makes it a big plus in my book!(Nothing like spending time creating something only to have it crack and fall apart upon drying)3. It is easier for us to use the white clay and paint it later. The colored clay can blend and make your sculptures look dirty, in my experience. So for messy me and my young messy kids...the white works best. Besides painting is fun!4. Easy to clean up!5) Does not require any shallac or varnish. It hardens up nice when it dries.CONS1) While handling the clay small pieces can fall off and make a mess. So be careful where you use ... MorePROS:1. So make sure to know what is safe to use for fillers, etc.

I have bought this Sculpey clay multiple times from Blick and it never disappoints. It's easy to use and great for small at-home projects. A small bit goes a long way and I've never had issues with it hardening or drying between uses. #sweepstakes

This does not feel like most of the Polymer Clays I've worked with. Straight out of the packaging, this polymer clay's consistency is that of actual clay, without the need to massage or roll it to soften it up or otherwise make it more maleable. It has a modeling clay or actual clay consistency, and lends itself very well to shaping and blending pieces together, as well as allowing for highly detailed work. It's possible I may've baked it at a slightly higher temperature than recommended (~ in my kitchen oven; I don't currently have an oven thermometer), and the finished product was slightly browned on its outer or highest edges and points.* "For Original Sculpey, preheat to 275 degrees F (135 C). I'm still fairly new to sculpting but this Sculpey is very forgiving to newer people like myself. I would recommend plending it with the soft sculpey though as this is a little less pliable and the soft is way too pliable. Mixing to preference doesn't affect backing time so I would say go with a mix that is comfortable for you. Also for more complex sculpts be sure to use the armiture wire and some aluminum foil. There are some awesome video's on Youtube, such as Cajun Craftastrophe and The Crafsman who have awesome advice.
It's buildable, easy to work with, and holds onto molded/carved details quite well (though you will need to use clay softener or a high percentage isopropyl alcohol to help remove fingerprints). The only issue I have with this specific one is that the white gets dirty very easily. Even washing your hands beforehand doesn't always guarantee clean white clay when you get to applying it to armature or sinilar working processes. But you can always use acrylic paints to fix all that, so it's a rather minor thing.
This modeling clay is firm at first but warms up fast as you work with it. Great for my 65 year old hands! I bought white original sculpey for a five day relief sculpture class. Stays soft until it’s baked so plenty of time to change your mind with your designs and shapes. Make sure your surfaces are clean and lint free because all that sticks on your white clay!
This is my go-to for so many sculpting projects. It's easy to sculpt with and smooths out like butter. It's softer than an oil based clay, but not so soft that it doesn't hold its shape. I was skeptical about oven baking the first time I used it, but it works as advertised. AWESOME stuff.
I have been using the Original Sculpey for over a year now for Christmas ornaments, miniatures and jewelry. I very much like that it can be formed into anything that I can imagine, painted, tinted...anything that works with polymer. I also have a granddaughter, age 11, who has started making items with the Polymer Clay. It's easy on the hands, too!
Accidentally, left this out of it's packing, for over a YEAR, in the part of the country that faces a horrible daily battle with humidity! To my udder amazement, Sculpey endured! It felt, and handled, as if I had just opened it! So, it started with 5 stars, and next came it's performance. It was easy to use, and shape, as I expected it would be, however I did find it difficult to use for making small details. Example - I made a sea-turtle - instead of painting, and / or carving, the shell designs on, I made each of them separately out of the clay, and then put them together to give the shell a 3D look. This proved to be very difficult with this clay though! The turtle was about the average size of a man's entire hand, so the shell design pieces needed to be small ... The turtle was about the average size of a man's entire hand, so the shell design pieces needed to be small (they were about a little bit smaller than a dime). Getting this clay to hold a specific form, with specific detail, using a small piece, was truly a nightmare, and I will never do that again! This clay is just too soft for small, detailed pieces. But, if I'm honest, Sculpey does say that this kind - 'original' - isn't good for small, detailing, so is it their fault? Or mine? It is clearly recommended that Super Sculpey be used for this, and I didn't follow the recommendation, so should they lose a star in a review for it? I don't think so. If they hadn't noted it wasn't good for small detailing, then yes, but they did, so... Still 5 stars. After baking it, sanding, painting, and hanging / displaying, folks...Guess what? It still walked away with all 5 stars! Just so you know, because I've been seeing this all over other places... I absolutely DID NOT receive any kind of discount, or compensation, or whatever else there is, to give this product a 5 star review, or to even review it at all! I reviewed it because I bought it, used it, love it, and want to let others know how awesome it is! I don't know about anyone else, but I don't spend a penny on anything without making sure it's at least decent! I work too hard for my pennies! Rest assured though, friends, this clay is an excellent choice!
I am a professional figurine artist...and although I have used other Polmer Clay products....I prefer SUPER SCULPEY. becaluse it is easly to work with. However, I had a problem finding a distributer who sold me fresh polmer Sculpey clay. I purchased from at least 5 other sources through the years and it was always too hard to sculpt with without... working with the clay until it got soft enough to sculpt something.I would go as far as beating the Super Sculpey with a hammer to soften it until soft enough. My sister is an artist in Wisconsin and she sent me a BLICK Art Catalog this summer and I decided to try ordering from Blick....I was AMAZED at how fresh it was AND how cheap it was AND shipping was free.Needless to say...I will reorder Sculpey soon.P.S. ...
