The F/1.4 maximum aperture will embolden all who take it in hand, a powerful tool for any adventurous photographer, especially for those who usually shoot in low-light environments, such as myself. Granted, with a fixed lens you have to move around to get the shot you like. You can not stand around flat-footed, when using a zoom lens. And that is good! Movement will stimulate your creative impulses. To this entry-level digital photographer, my Carl Zeiss 85F14Z might as well be the Hope Diamond!

If you think of it as a person. She will be your daughter. She is very noisy, but anything she does is beautiful in your eyes. You want to protect her from elements. She does not look robust, like her brother the 50mm f1.4.The picture is sharp on your subject and soft at the background. The edging is well defined. I am clearly enjoyed what I see.I guessed nothing is perfect in this world, but it can be perfect in your own world.

To get this quality of a lens, considering it was used for this price is almost like a dream come true. I have been eying this lens for almost a decade, now, to own it...wow. I have only taken a handful of pictures in extremely low light, but so far, I am totally confident in its abilities and the quality images it will provide.

Love this lens!
30 October 2012

I had been lusting over this lens for quite a while. Currently, I have the Zeiss 24-70 and love it. It's on my camera 80% of the time. But, I needed a great portrait lens for full frame and really wanted those extra stops of light. I've only had the lens for a couple weeks now, but the images are simply magical. There's a presence and a depth there that is unlike any other lens from any other maker. Build quality is fantastic and the lens just looks gorgeous on any camera body. Currently, I'm using this on a Sony a850 and a99. On the 850, it takes a little bit to focus (it nails it ever time, but it's a tad slow due to the screw drive). On the a99, it's definitely quicker, but not as much as the 24-70. Considering I use it mostly for portraiture, this isn't a ... MoreI had been lusting over this lens for quite a while. Outstanding portrait lense
15 October 2011

This is an outstanding lens. From consistent performance even at the extremes of its aperture range to solid construction and durable feel, this lens is at the top of Sony/Zeiss' game. It's especially powerful in low-light situations and portraiture, where the combination it manages laser sharp crispness where you want it and beautiful, creamy bokeh where you don't. It's an expensive lens, and there's arguably a little bit of name inflation rolled into that premium. But the quaity of the lens and results speaks for itself, and at this quality point it's competitive. If I had to list something negative about it lens, the best I could would be to grouse about its weight. It's notable heavy in the hands, and after a while of shooting fatigue it can weigh on your ... MoreThis is an outstanding lens. It's notable heavy in the hands, and after a while of shooting fatigue it can weigh on your wrists. But that same weight feels good, instills confidence, and is an unavoidable result of the lens's quality until they change the laws of physics or we see some major advances in materials sciences. In short, it's an incredible lens. If the price point does not dissuade you, you will not be disappointed.

Super Fantastic Lens
20 February 2012

First off - you get what you pay for. If you are a professional then you should demand it of yourself to have professional grade equipment. This lens lives up to the Carl Zeiss name. Well crafted sturdy lens - a great collection of glass. I thought it was going to be my portrait lens and some products. I thought I would have to move back a good ways from the subject - however for a telephoto lens I'm setting up the tripod only six feet back - shooting a four foot long product for a client - what a nice surprise - I was hoping to avoid the wide angle lens. Anyway, I hope Sony and Zeiss continue to build on this product line for the Sony a900. The detail is amazing, this lens works for me like no other I own.

The ultimate portrait lens
6 January 2015

I LOVE THIS LENS!!! No it isn't SSM, no it isn't weather sealed, and its motors are even a little noisy - But what a piece of glass, its well built and robust. Image quality is simply outstandingly sharp with creamy smooth out of focus bokeh, creating that all important separation and at the end of the day its that quality that matters most. Yes it is expensive, but worth every single penny. This is a must have lens. Even if they decided to update this lens, i don't think i would trade in my beloved 85mm

Trouble with a7R+LAEA4
9 March 2015

Optically I think this lens is good. However, I really don't like it when it comes to ergonomics. The focus ring will turn when focusing (it is not suppose to but this happens sometimes). The focusing motor is so noisy and vibrates. I feel like I am using a lens from the 90s. For me, the worse is that the AF is not really usable for me when I use it with a7R and LAEA4. The center focus point works fine after af micro adjustment. However, the outer points never works. SPecifically, I tested the two points on the right and on the left. They required different af micro adjustment value with the center point! In the end I sold this and got the Signma 85 1.4. Most of the headaches gone away.

You get what you pay for--in this case, magic
4 September 2016

I use this both for still-life photographs and portraits. It is almost magical. The focus drop off when opened up all the way to f/1.4 is breathtakingly quick. The lens is sharp across the image, even when opened wide. There is the slightest vignetting under very bright conditions at 1.4, but you wouldn't usually be shooting under those conditions anyway. If you have the resources and want to do portraiture or still-life shooting with maximum control, this is the lens for you.

Simply one of the best lens I have ever used. Standard 85mm makes it the perfect portrait lens in any collection, but this one is magical. It is super sharp, super fast F1.8 and come on, CZ auto-focus, Zeiss doesn't normally do auto-focus for other brands. The photos it produces just pop, there's nothing else like it (full frame range).I really like the old pre-SSM motor on this 85mm. I also own the CZ 50mm which is SSM but I much prefer this 85mm motor, it makes a noticeable hum when it focuses, which makes it feel like a solid piece of engineering. Personally I don't mind it at all, for I don't use it for videography, but portraiture. The lens comes with a pouch and a metal lens hood, an awesome lens hood.Paraphrasing someone's comment that I keep repeating ... MoreSimply one of the best lens I have ever used.
