This is a beautiful instrument and since being discontinued years ago is becoming very rare. Considerably more stylish I think than the 404a with the same functionality it's definitely worth buying an unopened piece of history if you can! Phenomenal to use and easy to get your head around with plenty of options for creativity. Say no more!

I'm satisfied with the SP-404SX but it's not perfect. I was looking for a playback machine that I could play 3-4 minute backing tracks to play guitar/bass and sing along to, it's perfect for that, it accepts stereo wav files and it's easy to transfer files to it with the included software. The effects are awesome and are highly editable. I haven't really used the pattern maker on it, I do my sequencing on the computer then just dump the finished wav file to one button so I have no need for it. The mic input is useful but it only has a 1/4" input so you'd need an adapter to plug in an SM58, all the effects can be applied to the mic.I like that the buttons light up to show what sample is playing but they feel stiff and awkward, I'm used to MPC pads. The volume and effect edit knobs feel flimsy, you'll want to take care of them or they can probably break or get bent. Also the adapter connector in the back does not feel solid and it wiggles around, if the power cable gets yanked or if the unit falls it can easily break. I thought the SP would be more solidly built overall but the bottom part is plastic and the top is a really thin cheap piece of metal, it is nowhere near heavy duty so take care of this machine if you buy it.The outputs are RCA connectors in the back and a 1/4" headphone out in the front, wish it had 1/4" stereo outs in the back but I just bought a 5$ RCA to quarter inch adapter for that.I'm still exploring it and have performed live with it a couple times, the lights are very helpful live on dark stages. People that use this machine are JonWayne and Madlib, it's a great box but could use some improvements, still it's the best box for my needs.
I am an electronic sound designer. I sold off an older Korg sampler and then missed having one. I researched and found this SP-404SX. It has just the right amount of control over the sounds and has an amazing 29 effects to warp and alter sounds that you import. The pads feel very good and the colors are nice on the eyes ;) It supports up to a 32GB SD card, so you can keep up to about 48 hours of sounds on the SD card and then import them into banks and pads on the sampler. If you don't want to get an MPC, then this is a very good choice for a very nice hardware sampler. Oh, and it also comes with some simple software to import sounds into the various pads within the banks, which is helpful.
There is a learning curve as expected, but an easy one - at least for me. I grew up in the 80's and 90's making beats with boomboxes, making radio shows, home recording onto the early digital 8-track models, etc. In my mind, the 404sx takes that 80's/90's usability and updates it with all of the basic things of modern technology of the day. Super easy to learn and allows a lot of room for creativity. Yes it is limited in aspects, but often times limitations force you to be more creative! And I don't believe the limitations are a game changer. The pros are much greater. And I love that it's so compact and easy to take on the road. You can literally use this as a field recorder with batter power and sample things out in the world at will, if you wanted to. I'm sure ... I'm sure there are more powerful sampler/beat makers out there at this point, but for the price and usability, it's a bingo in my book.
Overall this machine is great for what it does, but if it had a song mode for sequencing it will be perfect for the studio as a stand alone machine. For the DJ on the go this is great with hands on performance, but as a producer it is lacking in the sequence department. You 'll have to make a long pattern to emulate a song mode feature. The sampling is awesome. A 16G SD card will give you 24hrs of sampling time. That's a lot for just inserting a memory card rather than installing one.It saves and loads to the memory card on the fly which is great. The sample rate is CD quality and this machine is built very well. It is nice and compact for space saving. The value is a good deal seeing that you get to sample over 24hrs on a memory card of 16gigs.
SP-404 is a soo fun. Usage is pretty straightforward. People describe it as having limits which can be countered by imagination. Sounds redundant but once you jump in youll see.
Yes the OG has its limitations so it's the prefect machine to start on before you get into the SX. It's workarounds can be a bit tedious but for the most part is very enjoyable. I've done two live shows so far and it turned out great. I use it to make beats and perform live. And the vinyl sim compression is great.
There is only one con: the printed manual is in Japanese and I can't read it. But you can download it anyway. Otherwise it's GREAT. Where else can you get a Mint, In-Box original SP-404sx? Right here. I like the funky secondhand ones too but it's nice to know that this one is brand new. Been jammin on it night and day.
