Rode - VideoMic Directional On-Camera Microphone
The Rode Microphones VideoMic with Rycote Lyre Suspension System is a shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a Dslr camera. It features a Rycote suspension system that attaches to the camera's shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight and when mounting on a camera it does not appear in the frame. The VideoMic can also mount to Rode's boompoles for elevated audio capture. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances. The included Rycote Lyre is a non-elasticized suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic. It is more effective at acoustically decoupling microphones from unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than elasticized suspensions. The lyre remains effective at a wide range of temperatures and is virtually indestructible. It will never wear out, sag, snap or require any rethreading to maintain its effectiveness. An attached, coiled cable terminates to a 1/8" (3.5mm) mini output connection. The VideoMic features a condenser element that utilizes a standard 9 Volt batteries (sold separately). The microphone will run for approximately 100 hours on a single battery.

The description reads that in includes a windscreen but my order did not have a windscreen or even mention one on the box. I brought this up with a best buy representative and they fixed the issue by offering credit. I am still disappointed in the false information on the website. I will have to use the credit to purchase a windscreen. I will also update this post in the future with a review of the microphone. Buyer beware: no windscreen included, just the windshield (black puff over mic)The mic just makes the fit well in my camera backpack with all my other equipment which is great. It would be nice if Rode would include a case or bag to transport the mic which I feel was not professional. Not even a cloth bag included which is disappointing...

This is the best mic I've used thus far. Does a good job picking up sound when attached to the top of my camera. I have yet to use the boom pole but it looks great. Though it's still in the box. TBH I didn't realize I was purchasing a boom pole and dead cat or I wouldn't have got the 3rd dead cat. Still glad I got it for future use purposes. Never know when you'll need one I guess.

I have begun using my own camera for videos and interviews, so sound is a big concern. My built-in mic is of course not strong enough and can't filter out noise, and the sound quality was really unprofessional. I needed something that remedied that and was also affordable. This Rode mic was such a noticeable improvement. It was so simple to mount and the sound wuality and clarity is great. It picked up sounds well from across the room and from different directions. I still have to figure out how to deal with noise outfoors better-- maybe buying another filter cover, but it worked fairly well when recording my subject on the front porch. It was just fine after doing some sound editing for that segment.I would definitely recommend this mic until you can get ... MoreI have begun using my own camera for videos and interviews, so sound is a big concern. If you are looking for a decent microphone for blogs and voice interviews, this Rode shotgun will pass the line. On the other hand, recording live music is another story. The big issue recording music is that this Rode model a mono microphone, and mono, especially shotgun types, microphones tend to cancel reflecting sound waves hitting the mic creating hollow and slightly echoed sounds. I returned this mic and picked up a stereo model and much-improved sound quality.
I have been using this microphone for video work and even though it doesn't have level boosting, it's been pretty well. Only issue is when recording at loud environments, it's difficult to get -10 and -20 db adjustments since it's under battery door and practically impossible to change with fingers. So, if you're going to record concerts or similar type of events, this may not be the right microphone for you. Otherwise, it's been good for my use case both when directly connected to camera (Sony A7III) or my Zoom H1n recorder.
Sound quality on this is 10/10. It's lightweight, and compact enough to fit in your camera bag. The -10 and +20 dB gain options are clutch as well for noisy environments or a distant subject. The only downsides, as I see them, are (1) the lack of internal battery, (2) the necessity of the on/off switch, and (3) the very short 3.5 mm cord.(1) Needing to charge and carry spare 9V batteries is a pain, especially as this is the only device in my kit that uses them. An internal battery with USB-C charging port (OR drawing from the camera's internal battery via hot shoe) would have been ideal for my purposes.(2) The on/off switch is a great battery-saver, but it can also result in a recording with no audio if you forget to put it on & don't have the audio meters ... MoreSound quality on this is 10/10. Risky.(3) The cord makes sense for being plugged directly into the camera, which I think is its primary intended use. However, I'd have liked if Rde had included a 5'-10' extension cord to use this on a boom arm. You can buy the TRS extension cable, which I will now do, but it would have been more convenient if the mic had been delivered with 2 lengths of cable (direct camera attachment + boom attachment) that could be swapped into the device with a detachable input port. All of this is to say: if you're a vlogger, YouTuber, or amateur studio film maker that desires high quality, lightweight audio plugged directly onto your camera, then this is a solid bet. To be honest, most of my complaints would have been resolved by actually DOWNgrading to one of the more entry level models with no switches or battery (e.g., the VideoMicro or VideoMic GO), but nevertheless I don't regret this purchase at all :)
I don't like making negative reviews, but I also don't want anyone to go through the trouble of making the same mistake as me.. I thought this would be the route to go because I see so many people using on-camera mics like this in a professional setting.. But I think now that that's more out of necessity than efficiency.. People use these when they're "out in the field" and whatnot, but if you're recording at home, or in a studio, or some kind of controlled environment. Then your best bet is to go with external audio.. Something like recording into a laptop, or mixer (depending on the mic you're using).. Or getting something like a Zoom recorder. These things will give you WAY better audio.. Not had much chance to use the microphone yet but it seems to work OK on my Canon R5.The only niggle is that when it is mounted on the hot-shoe you are unable to use the EVF as your forehead catches on it. I have overcome this by making an extension bracket to move the microphone further forward (as in the picture) and all is now OK, that is the only reason for marking it down under 'Ease of use'.
I needed to record auditions for two dozen actors, and suddenly my producer had an emergency. Their input was vital for the process, so I quickly put together a plan to record the actors and show them to the producer later. One problem: The space we rented was HUGE and sound off the camera was bad.Enter the Røde. This thing wasn't too pricey but delivered a powerful quality. Even when my actors wandered the stage, belted out solos, or whispered emotional lines, I picked up what I needed to cut a really solid audition demo. It was a lifesaver. In small spaces, the sound quality is outstanding. In larger settings, you'll need to focus up on your subject. And careful when moving the camera.
The aesthetic and functional quality of the microphone is excellent! Basically new in my opinion. The shipping was fast and it was well packaged. When I opened the package, I put in a 9v battery, hooked it into my Tascam Dr-60 mkii and turned it on. It worked perfectly and to be honest, the sound quality is better than I expected. It records in stereo and picked up a dynamic range of sounds very clearly and cleanly. I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and will be using this mic as my go to mic for most quick applications. I have an AKG C1000 and an AKG Perception 420, and it sounds as clean or better than those 2 condenser microphones. High quality prosumer microphone that yields high clarity audio in most situations. Great for quick, mobile, small camera ... MoreThe aesthetic and functional quality of the microphone is excellent! Basically new in my opinion. The shipping was fast and it was well packaged.
