Rode Lavalier - Lapel Microphone
The R DE Lavalier is a discreet lapel microphone that provides broadcast-quality audio when close-miked in almost any scenario. Bought this to go with our Saramonic UWMic9 transmitters, to replace the rather large ones included in the kit. The Micon adapter is a really great design, allowing you to adapt these mics to different body packs and uses. Gives them a bit of future proofing and flexibility to be used with wireless packs, or hardwired with a separate XLR adapter. Really impressed with how this sounds - definitely recommend them!

I bought two of these Lavalier due it's versatile design. I do like being able to change out the connectors and use the Invisilav mounting system. The mic sounds great, however, in my experience using it it has been nothing but bad cable handling noises to the point of sounding like the electronic interference while connected to camera via XLR. out of 10 interview shoots each in a different location I got interference and rumbling cable noise in 7 of them. sometimes very low as I could live with and other where the audio was unusable. I troubleshooted by. swapping out XLR cables, creating a cable strain loop and taping the mic cable. It will help in some cases. I ruled out that perhaps the first unit was defective . I ruled out that the noise comes directly from the cable and not the actual microphone, perhaps in the connections. too in more than one occasion the noise disappeared after redoing the MiCon connections. Comparing this mic cable generated noise level when touching the cable compared to my old SONY ECM 55 and Sennheiser ME2 Lavalier, the noise picked up by the mic from rubbing my hand or rubbing agains cloths is 3 times more. In all of my shoot where cable noise from the Rode Lavalier was present, I did not panicked, because when i shoot interview I also run to camera audio channel 2 an Audio Technica AT4053b boom mic. this one has save me a lot of readable and trouble . Prior to buying this Rode mic I was using a SONY ECM 55 . I hope Rode creates a better shielded cable.

I've used these mics for about a year now and for the price it's hard to find a product as reliable across the board as Rode. The lav is great for rough field work (I do a lot of travel/international non-profit video work) and the mic has held up great in a variety of weather conditions and landscapes. The sound is crisp so as long as you know what you're doing with your recorder system - and is a great choice for interviews and other audio needs for most midrange video work. What's best about this mic is the adapter capabilities and accessories available. The variety of adapters allow you to fit to almost all audio recorders which is a huge advantage if you're working with a lot of different systems/people in the field. So to summarize: 1. Rode offers incredible warranties and service in the event that something goes astray with the product. 4. Great sound!

I used these lavaliere mics for film productions. I would say that the microphone itself has a nice sound quality. The problem is the build quality. The micon connection is too weak and sensitive, and after a couple of fast actions by the actor, it broke just above the connection. I purchased a new cable that cost me about 32 euros and I had exactly the same problem as soon as I went back to the set. The second problem is that the length of the cable is 1.2 meters. These mics were promoted that are made for movies and thats why Rode created invisilav. The problem of the cable being so short is that in films, usually the sound recordist installs the transmitter down on the actor's leg in order to hide it from the camera. The problem of the cable being so short is that in films, usually the sound recordist installs the transmitter down on the actor's leg in order to hide it from the camera. So even in the case of a short actor, the cable from down his leg to up his chest, is very stretched causing problems to the sound, as the micon connection is too weak, and also brings problems to the actor in his performance due to the uncomfortable length of the cable. I sent this report to Rode, and their answer was to get a 3m cable. And I did so. The result was that cable broke again in the first take of the scene. These mics are completely useless for films
This only gets two stars for me but they do sound great. I've had two of these for around two years now. I have bought 4 replacement cables and three replacement micon adapters (actually 5 micons, two I sent back as they didn't thread into a sony pack, despite labeled as the correct ones.) I work in news and documentary so use wireless lavs almost daily. These just aren't built to last. I keep very good care of my equipment, but with general knocks and strain from use, these need a new part every 4-5 months. For the same price (almost) go for a Tram or Sanken. Never have issues with these. I liked the modular concept of micon adapters, but it's clearly an engineering issue. These will break on you and sooner than you will be expecting... I've been using inexpensive lavaliere microphones from eBay and been very satisfied, but I wanted a less intrusive mic for on-camera use. The Rode is excellent in this regard as, without its wind muff, it is very slim. Rode also make 'invisible' stickers for fixing to skin. Having purchased the mic, I found the response to be much better than my cheap mike, having a very smooth sound, with more bass response. It was supplied with a foam wind muff, and a furry version too to reduce wind noise. I have bought a pale version of these from eBay to aid with unobtrusive mounting. The cable seems very robust and is terminated in a tiny screw connecter that interfaces with the plug that fits your equipment. I've got both xlr and 3.5mm plugs. It's a bit of a 'faff' to change ... The cable seems very robust and is terminated in a tiny screw connecter that interfaces with the plug that fits your equipment. I've got both xlr and 3.5mm plugs. It's a bit of a 'faff' to change them, and the travelling case seems too small to allow either of the adapters to be fitted in-transit. However, they are reliable and secure when in use, which is vital. As an aside, a pale cable would be useful when attached to pale clothing. I'm surprised no-one has come up with a solution to this issue. I use the mic with a Zoom H1 and my Sony EX1 pro camcorder. The sound is excellent with both. I've not used it directly with my Canon 600D DLSR but I'm sure it would work very well, having quite a high output signal. Since there is no battery for the mic, it needs to be used with equipment that supply phantom power through the cable. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I would certainly buy another. In fact, I'm now considering the radio mic version of this, and will look into the rest of the Rode range.
UPDATE to my review from 4 years ago. Good for Wex that they now clearly warn that you need to buy a Micon connector separately. The Rode Lavalieer is still good quality sound but not nearly robust enough. I have now got through three of these and they are not cheap. The case is indeed rugged but that is not much help when the microphone is in use. I have felt very uncomfortable on a location shoot in the hot sun doing interviews with a nagging worry in the back of my mind that the microphone may be failing or cutting in and out. If Rode would take steps to make the cable stronger (and a bit longer) this would be a near perfect product. As it is - you need to carry two - and that is not a recommendation!
All in all, an excellent microphone for the price. Great value. The Micon adapters you can purchase for these (at around $25 a piece) make this the most versatile lavalier microphone on the market. The mic is very sensitive so it has a nice signal to noise ratio. You don't have to gain it up very high in order to get nice, clean signal. Also, I have had no issues with explosive plosives or hissy sibilances even without using the pop-screen. As I have come to expect from R0DE, the case the mic comes in is rigid, tough and waterproof. Only 2 minor issues with the mic: 1) The pop-screen that comes with it is a little flimsy, and will likely come apart no matter how gentle you are with it. The Sanken sounds just a touch fuller (really almost unnoticeable to the untrained ear), but the R0DE appears to have a better signal to noise ratio.
My search for a new lavalier microphone was certain to include Rode. They are an Australian company who make quality microphones in Australia at competitive prices. I already owned some Rode microphones and have been very impressed with their performance. The Rode Lavalier Microphone is remarkable value for money. It captures the subjects voice at broadcast quality. Although it is designed to be used with a smartphone using the Rode app, I purchased an adapter cable also manufactured by Rode to use it with a Zoom H1 Handy Recorder. The Rode Lavalier Microphone is extremely lightweight and has a super strength kevlar cable which should help protect it from accidents. The sound is superb. The Rode Lavalier Microphone is extremely lightweight and has a super strength kevlar cable which should help protect it from accidents. The sound is superb. Every nuance can be heard clearly and without noise generated from the device. I recently used it in an interview under a corrugated iron verandah in light rain. The camera microphone picked up the rain noise but to my amazement there was hardly any rain noise in the background of my interview through the Rode Lavalier Mic. I did find it necessary to file the body side of the Lapel clip to smooth it off because it is sharp directly against skin. This took a few minutes and was very successful. My only other complaint is that it is difficult to register that particular microphone on Rode's website because it doesn't appear to carry a serial number. I previously used a vintage AKG D109 dynamic Lavalier microphone. I loved the sound from it but it weighed "a tonne" and I had to think wearer's comfort and weight at the airport. I expected to be losing a lot of sound isolation when I switched to this condenser mic but have been happily surprised. I have recommended this solution to a friend already.
The Rode Lavalier microphone is high quality and produces very clear sound from interviews - far better than you will get from the camera/video recorder. I pair it with a Zoom tape recorder and then add this sound track to the video timeline. These are small items and can easily break. Rode provides a strong box and a storage system that is fairly robust but fiddly and time consuming when on a shoot. So after three years I had to replace mine (and because it was snapped I foolishly threw it away). I bought a replacement from Wex - usual swift service - completely forgetting that Rode supply these microphones with no fitting to attach them to a camera or tape recorder. You need a MiCon 2 or 1. Those of you over a certain age will remember we used to buy washing machines and irons and and find when we got them home, there was no plug attached. This is a similar piece of idiocy. This is Rode policy rather than Wex but at the time of writing this Wex did not seem aware of the problem and did not stock the item. They are now looking into it. Meanwhile, there should be a health warning on this item as it affects the price (the adaptor is about £15) and makes the microphone unusable until you buy one. I assume Rode thinks that if you are true professional you will have one of these adaptors already plugged into your skin somewhere. (Of course when I scrapped the broken mic, the adaptor went with it....) I would only recommend the product with this warning - adapt or fail!
