I belong to a FB group called Pet Vet Corner, which is essentially run by verified vets who volunteer their time to support animal owners with second opinions, advice, and insights. They do their best to help people who are facing barriers to care for their pet, usually due to local vet shortages, financial limitations, or their personal vet’s limitations. They have some documents for the group answering FAQs, one of which addresses which foods are the safest for our pets. They review all the ingredients, balance of vitamins nutrients, and take note of any other issues (like frequent recalls or commonly reported health issues) before putting a food on the list, so you can rest assured that the recommended foods are the healthiest and most balanced options for your ... These vets don’t profit whatsoever from putting this information out, so there’s no concern about biases there. They don’t just list the brands either, they make sure to specify which ones are approved. Purina Pro Plan was the most affordable and easily accessible of the list for us to get when we first got our dog 3 years ago. I haven’t had any reason to doubt the vets’ recommendation so far!

I have contacted the company (Purina) regarding the bag I received. There is a lot of powder in the bag and I asked if this was normal. Almost like the bits of food were pulverized. My dog chokes when eating it as the powder gets inhaled. He really loves the food though. This was my first time buying since switching to a weight management kind of food. They said it is not the normal consistency.

This food is great. We have a 165lb 7 year old Great Dane. She loves this food and it has helped her in multiple ways. Prior to switching to this food she had the occasional issues with her glands and dry skin. Since going on this food, has had zero issues with her skin and glands and she even has more energy and less issues getting up and down. The added Joint support is great and definitely can see the difference. Highly recommend this food for your large breed pups.

I have 4 large breed dogs 2 Rottweiler/St. Bernard 1 husky. 1 AmStaff. They are all over one year old and my bigger two weigh 120+lbs with appetites to match and the smaller two the husky is 60+ lbs and AmStaff Terrier is 50+ lbs. All four of my dog’s are VERY particular about their food. Before this food they would only eat Purina Salmon and Tuna. They would all require a full bowl per feeding 3 times a day of that food. Once it was discontinued I had to switch and it took several options before finding one they liked that was also healthy for them. This food is expensive but my dogs only require 2 feedings a day now instead of three and I only have to feed two of them half of the bowl per serving instead of a full bowl. So not only is the expense pretty evened out with what I typically expect to pay for healthy dog food but my dogs get full and have plenty of energy. My one larger dog also has bad stomach issues and this food sits right with him. I have switched to solely purchasing this Purina Pro Plan food with my dogs good health and vet approval in the forefront of my mind.
One of my Great Danes has a somewhat sensitive stomach as well as a propensity to get bored with food easily. I went looking for a better quality food other than the smart-blend large breed he was having issues with. I picked up this as well as Blue Buffalo with the intention of moving him to the Blue Buffalo from the Pro-Plan. He very much enjoyed the Pro-Plan! After a discussion with his Vet, they recommended that we keep him on the Pro-Plan and not switch to Blue-Buffalo at all. Happy pet, happy consumer, happy vet!
Small Animal vet 46 years in practice I recommend the Pro Plan line in general to all clients. Personally use the Focus for my 3 dogs at home a Spinonie Italiano who is actually on the weight management option and 2 Standard poodles who eat the regular. All three are eager eaters , they have been on Focus for not quite 4 years. All bowels are completely cleaned at both daily feedings. Feel it is a complete balanced diet and I like the added glucosamine for these bigger dogs. The availability of the larger bag size -47 pounds is convenient as it goes quickly. Wish the weight management came larger than the 34 pound option. am confident with all the research etc that has gone into Purina's food line for so many years. I have also enjoyed the info handouts/pamphlets. ... MoreSmall Animal vet 46 years in practice I recommend the Pro Plan line in general to all clients. Our 2 year old Doberman was on Eukenabu large breed all his life (puppy and then switched to adult). However, after dealing with supply chain issues and not being able to find a bag in a 200 mile radius three times, I gave up on the brand. I switched our dog to Purina Pro Plan adult large breed dog food and the transition went smoothly, no diarrhea or upset stomach. The best part is, no change in his stool. It remained solid, easy to pick up and cleanly breaks apart. He also retains his nice shiny coat. And the greatest thing is Purina Pro Plan is made here in the States and not imported like some Mars, Inc. owned dog food manufactures, i.e. Eukanuba, Royal Canin - so it is readily available.
Was happy with this particular food/formula but now not so sure. Formula has changed since my last bag. Was called Pro Plan Focus for Large Breeds now changed to Purina Pro Plan Adult Large Breed, also different bag design, and CHANGE in recipe! The new formula now has garlic oil which is QUESTIONABLE! After reading other reviews seems many people are questioning recipe change and have been told they are going back to "old" formula due to supply constraint on some ingredients. But if you live in certain states: NY, NJ, MA, OH, VT or PA it seems like you're stuck with the new formula. WHY? Numerous phone calls don't connect to anything but a recording. Been a faithful Purina feeder for many, many years; dog and cat, both wet and dry, but now I'm thinking about ... MoreWas happy with this particular food/formula but now not so sure. So yes, I must admit that I have fallen into the crazy “fad” of grain free, wheat free, soy free & no by-products pet foods that some pet owners are into.I have had my GSD try everything from Blue Buffalo Wilderness all the way to Organix, just to only find out that the ONLY noticeable difference was less money in my pocket for a much smaller bag size.Purina Pro Plan Focus platform has been the BEST by far for my GSD and even their Pro Plan Focus line for my cat.Their skin & Coat have never been healthier, she has much more energy, her stool is small and firm (absorbing more nutrients) and her eyes and teeth and bright as ever!If you were like me and into this new grain free/wheat free, by-product free “fad”, just remember that their wolf ancestors didn’t ... They go straight to the (what the industry calls) by-products: heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, exc. Why? Cause that’s where moat the nutrients are. Also, this grain free “fad”, just remember, wolves/dogs may not go around eating corn, wheat or soy BUT they definitely eat the animals who do, which has them consume them in that way.Purina Pro Plan doesn’t use feet, neck, feathers, exc in their by-products, which is why I chose them. Also they manufacture their own foods in their own USA Company Owned facilities, unlike Blue Buffalo who outsource to a 3rd party manufacturer.Added bonus: they have over 400+ Animal Nutritionist & Scientists to ensure they deliver groundbreaking nutritional foods that help extend your pets life.If you want the healthiest dog or cat possible, I highly recommend going Purina Pro Plan!
I bought Purina pro plan salmon from pet meds for small breed, I ended up buying 2bags for the price of one, I should have known that I was not getting a bargain when I opened up the second bag just the other day and moths came flying out of it and there were webs and worms and other kinds of creepy crawlers in it. Pet meds is crediting me on the bag, but recommended that I contact Purina, so I did today. It was like they did not believe me and expected me to keep the bag of bugs for whatever their reason were. No way. Then I was put on hold many times and for what, I was told they were checking on the product. It made no sense to me, I felt as if I was being dismissed and they didn't believe anything I said and told me they take pride in making their product of ... Nothing was resolved, except I wanted to let others know that Purina pro plan should be recalled due to disgusting things in their sealed bags. Inferior products, never again will I buy or recommend the product to any animal owner. Does not deserve a one star
