(557 reviews)

The Chartres Blue Platinum 3776 Century is a contemporary fountain pen with a sleek design, comfortable writing balance, smooth flow, and fast-drying ink. The translucent blue body is accented by gold trim. The innovative cap contains a unique “Slip & Seal” mechanism that prevents ink from drying out in the pen for up to 2 years, while a newly redesigned 14k gold nib and feed regulate the ink flow. The attention to detail is also evident on the the cap ring, which has been etched to create a three-dimensional effect of the logo. The Platinum 3776 Century accepts proprietary Platinum cartridges or a Platinum converter for use with bottled ink. Only the cartridge is included, while converter and replacement cartridges can be found here. The Chartre Blue is inspired by the Chartre Cathedral in France, which is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as it is considered to be "the high point of French Gothic art" and a "masterpiece". One of the most distinctive features of Chartres Cathedral is the stained glass, both for its quantity and quality.

It is a fine pen, and performs extremely well, for its price! No one’s “twisting my arm” to write this, either. What happened, is that I did not understand how to properly install the proprietary ink cartridge for this pen. It is *very* important to install the cartridge in the pen, by holding the pen *at an angle*, with the nib pointing up - *exactly* as indicated in the diagram included in the pen instruction manual! If you fail to do this, the cartridge will not have a proper seal with the nib and the nib will leak. This is what happened which caused me to ... MoreWith egg on my face, I am posting this updated review. Plus, it’s not a fussy, “high maintenance” pen, either. It is one of those fountain pens that is easy to carry, is expensive enough to the point where the nib is good quality and once you get to writing with it, is hardly ever scratchy and doesn’t skip (except when the cartridge needs to be replaced). Please disregard my previous negative review of the Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen. The Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen with medium nib is a fine “Intermediate” level fountain pen: It offers great performance at a relatively low price. I would definitely recommend it - especially if you are looking for a moderately priced “luxury kind of pen” with both luxurious looks and solid performance.

A beautiful pen, in every way.

Everything from the fit and feel of this pen, to the capping, to the writing with fantastic nib just overflows with quality. The pen writes precisely, consistently, and perfectly, with good flow and a really positive feel from the nib. The blue color of the pen is deceptively dark, but in bright light, it is exactly what I expected. I could not be happier with this purchase.

You *will* get plenty of feedback with this nib, but it glides well, gives you good control, and writes very consistently without being picky. The higher nib stiffness makes it more forgiving to write with and easier to be precise. I use my Music nib for my daily writer, but have this pen right next to it in order to make detailings and drawings/illustrations or notes when the big Music nib won't work. The slip and seal mechanism on this pen means that I can use this pen as an auxiliary pen without worrying about the pen drying out, which makes it especially suitable for this use case. The fact that it matches with my Platinum #3776 Music nib so well also helps.

I've heard that Platinum's nibs are 'scratchy'.
3 June 2024

And based on my recent purchase. they are, at least at this price point. A little tuning made a big difference. The 3776 feels good in the hand, is well made -and adjusted- is a pleasant writer. I've written with a Platinum Preppie for years however and find the nibs smooth and wet. Strange.

My Grail Pen
17 November 2023

This was my grail pen. I wanted a pen that was the perfect shade of green, with gold trim and a gold nib. This was it. The green is dark, but not so dark that you can't tell it is green. It's dark enough that you cannot clearly see the pen's inner workings, but translucent enough to catch light just right. I LOVE Platinum nibs. I have a Procyon and a Curidas and I love them both. The fine gold nib does not disappoint. I don't get any line variation, but that's okay, I don't want any. It writes dry, so no smearing, blobs instead of closed-loop letters, or anything distracting to deal with. It works well with some of my wetter inks, particularly the ones that are messy in wetter pens. As always, it was packed with a slightly ridiculous amount of care, a Tootsie Pop ... MoreThis was my grail pen. I wanted a pen that was the perfect shade of green, with gold trim and a gold nib. Not as smooth as pilot neither
25 February 2024

Thanks bharath for promptly answering my queries. I ordered this pen along with pilot sterling silver and sailor 1911L ( from william penn ).Unlike pilot this is not that smooth and silky to write , it doesn't have that scratchy feedback like sailor nibs. Overall I found it to be pretty ordinary pen , not worth 20k.Put in some more money to get either pilot or sailor nibs

I am a Japanese student who needs to write kanji and write them very, very small. I started off with a set of Kakunos and I had an EF vanishing point that was stolen, and I was recommended if I wanted to get even smaller to use a Platinum 3776. From the reviews I saw, visually and through text, it seemed like I could actually get smaller. Goulet's page said it didn't include a converter, so I grabbed a converter too when I bought it. Wait a while for it to get here and... It comes with its own converter. That was mildly upsetting but hey, might be a mistake, and I did get the gold one that matches, fine. I do a writing test with my various pens to see the scaling difference. Platinum 3776 turns out to be no finer than my Kakuno EF, about as wet as my Kakuno F, and an order of magnitude more expensive than either. It may be a good go-to pen for writing with exceptionally dry inks on a tiny scale, but for what I bought it for - to have a good pen capable of writing beyond EF widths, I am sorely disappointed.

Platinum #3776 CENTURY Fountain Pen Chartres Blue Rhodium F Nib - excellent and fun
27 January 2023

This is a beautiful and high quality pen. It wrote beautifully right out of the box (packaging was nice too). It was a great bang for the buck for a pen with a 14k gold nib and all the metal has rhodium plating - wow. I love it. It is light and well balanced whether posted or not while writing. The fine nib just glided across the page. I have enjoyed it immensely since I received it. I highly recommend it. ***** - five stars for sure

Very Nice Pen
18 August 2022

I bought this pen in EF, and even though I am usually a big fan of Japanese EF and F nibs, this one is very much a needle and not quite as smooth as I had hoped (maybe if I tune it a bit I can get it to be a bit more pleasant to write with). The acrylic is darker than I expected. The blue is gorgeous when held up to bright light, but in anything dimmer the blue is very hard to discern. For example, in my pen storage box with cream colored inserts the pen appears to be black. That was not what I expected. I have wanted the pen since it came on the market precisely because it is an homage to the blue used in the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral in France - a very famous blue that I have loved since I was very young. While I can appreciate that blue when I hold the pen up to the light, it is not possible to write that way! Perhaps if one only uses it outside on sunny days? It's a very nice pen. Platinum pens are great and I have and enjoy several from cheap to shamefully expensive but this one is probably my least favorite of the lot, which doesn't mean it's a bad pen, it's just not one of my more favored pens.
