The Power-Unit for the CLEANER - it's not actually used with the razor stand-alone, since that re-charges the razor via the cleaning operation whilst in use - is incorrectly designed - as that can't be used in a typical bathroom, as the fitting for that location (at a special razor point OVER THE SINK!) would be inappropriate for leaving such plugged-in for up to 4 hours at a time! (The electrical 'plug-fitting' is a weird combination of BS372 (part 1) 2-pin fitting (i.e. 'old British' 5-amp circa 1930 C.E.) with built-in extension piece specifically to fit witin the cavity of a SWISS-unique 2-pin power-socket (would hang right out of a British bathroom power-transformer unit). (That same power-unit is seemingly supplied for use throughout at least Western Europe, just as a cost-cutting cheat). There's another power-unit available as an 'accessory', designed to connect to a standard BRITISH 'Rectangular-Blade' power-socket (well - it looks as if designed for that purpose - but it's another cheat, since it's actually a transformer-unit built within a BS1363 look-alike plug-top, not a proper BS1363 plug-top - no fuse facility at all), but cannot take the obligatory ONE AMP BS1362 fuse. Model S9900 - 'top of the range' pricewise, has contactless charging (why?) needs a cleaning-unit (none supplied) but can't use anything yet designed, because - guess what? - such would be totally incompatibe because the razor itself has not got any conventional plug-in power connection (that specific razor is totally 'contactless' of course & thus totally useless); what a wonderful design! Although all similar models are designed seemingly for both 'wet' & 'dry' usage, there's no cleaning brush in any of the packaging, & the useless picture-form of 'operating instructions' omits anything to do with 'dry' usage'. The Customer Services section appear to be totally unware of particularly the 'cleaner' problem; it took an age before they accepted that there was an issue there in that it's just the obsolete 'cleaner' presently being supplied. I didn't persue the 'electrical' mis-build with them, as such appeared to be totally beyond their comprehension; even the cretins that have written the supposed 'electrical standards', don't understand 'Ring' circuitry fully, & the very heavy power served to all connections (minimum 32-amps, going up to 48-amps at a cooker-point, & up to 128-amps in special circumstances - all requiring the use of APPROPRIATE BS1362 fuses to prevent house-fires WHEN malfunctioning occurs). ALL units already sold should all be withdrawn & the customers be refunded; I'm returning the trash that was supplied to me!I forgot to mention, that each razor model is obtainable in various 'packs' that can include 'accessory' items - but what's included or excluded isn't very clear, & such appears not to adequately justify price differences. All available models are included on the Philip's web-site at FULL RETAIL PRICE, yet disregarding the menus & drilling down with simple searches reveals almost all available at substancial discounts of up to almost 50% on certain items, & at least 20% on most. A 'student discount' is advertised as being available, yet such isn't detailed & the routines to obtain such don't work!

I think for me this was a little bit of an expensive experiment and I will most likely be returning to a standard razor.

Definitely would recommend
31 December 2021

Review done by husband. Really was skeptical of purchasing another electric razor and really did a lot of research into many different ones. Several months into looking came across this one and even then was still skeptical because of my tender skin when I use an electric razor. Served 21 yrs in the Military and having to shave everyday really made me think about what razor I wanted. I decided on this one based on many reviews and the options it has for cleaning. Am I glad I did. One thing I will suggest is that if you let your beard grow out a few days, trim it down first so that it reduces the chances of ingrown hairs. I have noticed a huge difference and having the ability to adjust the heads on this razor has made a huge difference! I would recommend to anyone!

Do not buy, shaver is unusable
19 July 2022

I don't know who designed this, but the neck joint that connects the shaving head to the shaver is incredibly fickle. It is only connected by two compressing wire filaments, such that pulling on the head detaches or reattaches the head for cleaning. As a result, I have never managed to shave without the head falling straight off when shaving under my chin.Any pressure will pop the head off, and as the product ages, the compression points wear more and more leading to more frequent beheadings.I look forward to the day when the head just shatters on my bathroom floor so I can go buy any other shaver.

Excellent shaver, best one thus far

My old Philips shaver, while still functioning, was nearing its end of life. Saw this one on sale on Boxing Day and couldn't pass on the opportunity. I've been using electrical shavers for the last, let me see, around 25 years at least. This is my 4th Philips shaver and definitely the best to this point. I saw some negative reviews and was a bit hesitant but with the great price and my personal experience with Philips shavers I decided to go for it. Shipping was quick, considering COVID, the holidays and the weekend.I must say I was not disappointed. While somewhat similar in size to my old shaver, this one is lighter and better yet, shaves much closer. Yes, it is that noticeable. It is even easier to clean, whether rinsing under the tap or using the SmartClean System that comes with it. The SmartClean system seems really cool and makes the shaver smell awesome.I use my shavers to also shave my head, every day, for years (many) and just like before, this one shaves better than ever before, much closer to razor smooth than any other shaver I've used. No skin irritation at all, it glides very smoothly on your skin. Also, I know I just got it but battery life has been really good so far. On the first charge it lasted around 2 weeks or soSo, to keep this short, I totally recommend this shaver, everyone's face, stubble and skin are different but for me, this one is a winner, two thumbs up, the whole shebang.

Gives clean, comfortable shaves
23 August 2021

After reading reviews and opinions, I settled on this 9300. For me, Philips/Norelco rotary shavers are familiar and easy to use, and give a clean, comfortable shave. I've not yet used it with shaving cream, but may give that a try eventually. I like the three speeds option and found the high speed useful after I skipped shaving for a day. While researching reviews, I learned that genuine heads are expensive and online sellers have lots of inferior counterfeits for sale. It sounds like these really compromise performance. So be careful when purchasing replacement heads. Life expectancy for a set of heads is supposed to be one year. I hope that's true.

Needs improvement in two areas
22 April 2019

I purchased a S9721/89 in June 2018, and was fairly happy with it, until I pulled off the shaver head to attach the trimmer. After putting the shaver head back on, the head to body attachment just got looser and looser over time. The head would tilt so far from vertical, while shaving, that you could hear grinding as the drive shaft was slipping, trying to engage the head. Got to the point where I could no longer open the head to clean the blades without the head pulling off the body.Thinking that perhaps it was my fault when I pulled the head off the first time, I purchased a S9733/90 in December 2018, and decided to never pull off the shaver head. Now, four months later, the shaver head on this unit is getting loose, and starting to tilt and grind while shaving. I do need to use firm pressure while shaving to get a close shave on my puffy face.Having now read similar reviews on this site, this appears to be a weak link in this shaver. The plastic used for the shaver head connecting shaft, is too soft to handle the metal retaining pins in the shaver body that snap into grooves in the shaft. The plastic grooves deform over time and allow the head to pull free from the retaining pins too easily. Those pins are probably somewhat spring loaded to allow them to spread apart to allow the shaft to pull free when removing the head from the body. When I have some time, I'll disassemble one the shavers and see if those pins can be made to pinch the shaft tighter, and not allow the head to be pulled off, so I can have one shaver with a permanently attached shaver head.Another, less serious issue I have with these shavers, is that the shaver blades are inset very far from the edge of the shaver head, making it difficult to get hairs on the upper lip, near the nose. Really have to distort the nose to get a close shave up there. On all my older Norelco shavers (I've been using Norelco shavers, exclusively, for 50 years), the head design allowed for the blade openings to be closer to the edge of the shaver head, making it easier to shave close to the nose.

I was planning to replace my old Norelco SpeedXL 8140 with this new fancy version. Frankly I was disappointed, I feel as though Philips has not made any large improvements and in fact made these newer models more likely to break. If you want to use the trimmer, you have to remove the trihead shaver and then snap on the trimmer instead of it being built-in like my older model which isn't much larger. Aside from that, the shave wasn't anything to write home about compared to my older model. Maybe it saved a couple passthroughs. I just ended up returning it and replacing the shaver blades in my old model. I did give the 9300 a break in period of around two weeks as well, but it just didn't justify the price tag. It does look aesthetically pleasing, come with a carrying case, and a fancy cleaner dock. However, in regards to the dock, it just comes off as more bathroom sink clutter rather than utility. If you have an old reliable shaver and were looking to upgrade, I'd say just hold on to what you got.

Smooth shaving experiment
21 June 2023

The shaver now features 3 shaving heads that are removed/replaced as a single unit, whereas previous heads were replaced individually by using a provided “tool”. I had experienced problems with the old design properly seating an holding the heads properly. The new design appears better - time will tell, but I am hopeful. This shaver holds a charge far better than my previous 9000 series Philips/Norelco shaver. I am a LONG term customer of this brand and triple head shaver. I have used Norelco since I was 16, and I am now 70.
