I have a K5IIs and had been using the surprisingly competent 18-55 WR lens (current version). The 18-55 WR lens yields very sharp and crisp images in the center, but not on the margins. So, I thought I'd try the 20-40 as an alternative (I use my little Pentax as an alternative grab-n-go camera to my other grab-n-go camera, my Leica M240). What results I'd say conservatively that the 20-40 is an order of magnitude sharper in the center and along the margins, very sharp, compared to the 18-55 WR. Normally I shoot with a Leica S006 or M240 and frankly this little lens, while certainly not Leica S or even Leica M equivalent, produces very sharp and acceptable images at a fraction of the cost. I've also shot at the maximum apertures and the out of focus areas are generally smooth and pleasing to look at (not Noctilux Bokeh but very acceptable). To sum up my experience I've been very pleased with the sharpness across the lens, the auto focus has been accurate and reasonably fast (the K5IIs is not an auto focus champ to begin with) and much more enjoyable with the new DC motor vs. the old screw-type. Finally, the images have been well saturated and contrasty, and with very little trace of CA or excessive distortion (shooting in RAWJPGs will have near zero distortion due to in-camera corrections). If you don't mind spending a little above average for a relatively narrow focal range zoom, this little Pentax 20-40 will be very rewarding to you.

Zoom range seemed a bit odd at first but is proving to be very practical the more I use it.Have been VERY pleased with image results from 20-40 LTD. 90% of the time I am shooting at f5.6 or f8 and the lens is sharp all around. If you are getting your first DSLR I would highly recommend the Pentax KF with the 20-40mm Limited as a starting point/kit. Very nice lens.

This lens is a pleasure to use and takes very high quality pictures. As someone else told me, it is like having 2 prime lenses (20 and 40 mm) in one housing. The only problem I had was I initially purchased a 55 mm Tiffen UV filter to protect the lens. BIG mistake. As I learned the hard way, never put a cheap UV filter on an expensive lens. It degrades resolution. I replaced the junk Tiffen with a B+W UV Haze filter and image quality is excellent. See the photo for a crop of images taken at F/2.8 and 20 mm focal length, with No filter and a B+W UV-Haze filter. I can not see any difference. While the Tiffen image (not shown here) was badly degraded.

First of all I can't give an extensive review for this lens since I only had it a couple of weeks. Maybe after a few months I'll update this review to give you a better perspective on how I feel about this lens. I have lusted for this lens for quite a while now, but the thing that held me back was the price. Due to the limited range and due to some negative reviews I was hesitant to fork over that much money for it. A few weeks ago I was looking at the BH website and saw that this lens was selling for only $ Used in 9+ condition ! This was about the lowest price I had yet to see for this lens new or used, so I got it. I figured I could always send it back within 31 days if I did not like it. So, lately I have been testing this lens under as many real-life conditions as possible, hoping I would not have to send it back. Like I said, it's only been a few weeks if that many, but so far I'm pleasantly surprised. This lens is a marvel of engineering and so fits well with my K-5 IIs which is a marvel of it's own. First I will describe the Aperture which some people have complained about being too slow. At 20mm you can open up to f2.8, at 25-30mm f3.5, at 35-40mm f4.0. Not bad considering that even some limited primes within those focal ranges are not much faster. I compared the Sharpness of this lens against my 16-45mm f4 and 35mm Macro f2.8. The good thing about this lens is that it does not extend much from the body like my 16-45mm does. At 20mm it extends about 2/3 of an inch. at the other focal lengths it does not extend past 1/2 of an inch from the body. The distance scale on this lens is quite limited in that after 5 feet it goes straight to infinity with nothing in between, but that might have to do with lens design for zooms which I now little about From what I can tell, this lens is a tad sharper than my 16-45mm across all focal lengths except maybe the 30mm focal length, why I don't know ? What this lens got going for it, is the way it renders the colors and the contrast. Not artsy, not over-saturated, but amazingly life-like. At 35mm, my 35mm f2.8 Macro is sharper across the length of the frame, but to tell you the truth, there is not much difference between all 3 lenses unless you really pixel-peep. If you really want sharp though, set the camera to ISO 80. Then you start moving into 3D territory...Handling : Although this lens is supposed to be all metal, it is very light to the point where I think it's some kind of aluminum instead of real metal ? Nevertheless it is very well built, but I wish it had the heft of my other limited lenses just my opinion... The focusing is very well damped as well as the Zoom dial. So there is no problem there. One thing is the very fancy lens cap. I am so afraid that I might drop it and lose it (@$) that I keep it in my left hand when shooting. This lens is light and well balanced enough for me to do that thankfully.Autofocus is nearly silent and pretty quick. You really have to put your ears pretty close to the camera to hear it. This is perfect for places like museums, operas, churches, funerals, where the loud buzzing whirl of other lenses might become annoying. One thing I noticed is that the AF is faster and much more accurate if you limit the auto focusing points. I set my AF to Sel Mode and only use one focusing point, so far this has worked best for me.Bokeh is reasonable mild/smooth a little better than on my 16-45mm, but not better than on my 35mm, or 77mm. I have not had the time to test this much so I can't say much about it. Aberrations: What I like about this lens is this new Pentax Anti Flare coating. This really helps when shooting into the light, not just sun light, I'm talking about street lights and car lights and things like that. This lens does not fall apart like my Limited and other lenses do in those conditions. Another thing I noticed though is that this lens produces a little bit more CA under certain circumstances than my 16-45mm. It could be my copy, but I'm still investigating. If you take all the features into consideration, not just pixel-peeping sharpness, this is a wonderful lens and a marvel of engineering. Time and experience will tell whether I will send it back, but so far so good.

This is my new favorite lens--and the one that will remain on my camera for the vast majority of the time. (Most of the pictures that I take fall within this range--which is effectively about 30-60mm on the K3.)My copy has no softness anywhere: it is sharp from corner to corner across the focal and aperture range, without post-sharpening. Most other reviewers here have had the same experience. There is slight distortion across the focal range, but lens corrections fix this without introducing any artifacts that I've noticed.Autofocus performance has been fantastic, for the most part. I’ve ran into a few instances where a miss at close distances at 20mm results in a bit of seeking, which is nothing a bit of wiggling won't fix.The lens looks nice--a niche in the lens market, IMHO. It is built extremely well, though is quite lite. I have never used a lens that I would rather hike with. For that matter, it is also quite small. In fact, it is absolutely dwarfed by my other general-purpose lens. However, it performs just as well, though it is a bit restrictive in its range--an effective 30-60mm versus 24-70mm of my other lens--and it lacks constant aperture. That last part is absolutely the cost of “small” and “lite.” I prefer the small and lite, especially while traveling.Speaking of costs, this lens is also $2K cheaper than my other general-purpose lens, which makes me question where my loyalties have been :). I paid about $500 for this lens from BH Photo. It’s easily--easily--worth twice that. Its bokeh has a uniquely-structured look, which is quite pleasant versus the Gaussian-blur-like bokeh common to other lenses.Aside to all else, the most positive thing that I believe can be said about a lens is that “it has character.” (Meaning good things, of course.) This lens most definitely fits the bill. The micro-geometric rendition that it offers is different from anything I’ve experienced before within this range. But I can’t exactly put my finger on what the differences are. Other reviewers have alluded to the same, referring to the effect as “3D pop”, “pixie dust”, etcetera. Perhaps the difference is due to subtle aberrative effects--or other errors--introduced by the “small” and “lite” crunch. In any case, I really like it.

[Rewarded Review] A compact, pile of DA primes
6 February 2020

I needed a good-quality and light travel zoom to replace the DA 18-55mm wr. Therefore, I bought this lens which is very versatile despite the limited zoom range: 20 mm is ok for landscape photography, 35 mm is the typical normal focal lenght, 40 mm although not optimal, it's good for close-up and portraits. The lens is very light and it's easy to handle with the KP. It's sufficiently sharp for my needs and the bokeh is also very pleasant. I didn't notice any CA or fringing.Autofocus is silent and precise, but no so fast. For me, the only drawabacks of this lens are: i) the cap, which falls easily; and ii) the black coating material of the knurled part of the lens that tends to get damaged.

11 August 2021

Have been looking for lens to replace the Sigma whos only fault was poor balance on the KP. Plus I had the urge to at least own one limited in my lifetime. Build quality of the lens is on par with the old screw mount Super Takamers for those of us old enough to remember the good old days. When no plastics was used in lens construction. So far optical quality on this lens is superb, and beats the Sigma in the common range in my opinion. The Sigma still has a home on my K20. So far I.ve found that the focal length markings are quite accurate. This at this point is a partial review and basic impressions. Will follow up later after I put some time in the field.

After much deliberation, I ended up buying this lens. I am glad I did. This is a really handsome lens. It is not big or heavy. And it actually seems to have that magic pixie dust quality of some prime lenses, although it is a zoom! I like the pictures I've managed to take so far.
