I am completely enamored by the new R1 Air fleece that I purchased earlier this month. Patagonia has always been a leader innovating and perfecting performance base layers, and fleece, in particular. But with this new R1 Air addition, they have created something special that performs exceptionally well. I have worn this quarter zip hiking and on runs in the Bay Area, at temperatures from the high 40's to the low 60's and did not feel overheated or cold. In fact, the innovative zig zag design of the fleece allows for more air flow and really dumps heat during high output physical activity like running. Another impressive thing is that the design does not seem to hinder the fabric's ability to block wind - with a small caveat being as long as you are moving - if you ... MoreI am completely enamored by the new R1 Air fleece that I purchased earlier this month. Another impressive thing is that the design does not seem to hinder the fabric's ability to block wind - with a small caveat being as long as you are moving - if you are sitting still for an extended time, you can definitely feel the wind if wearing only a base layer and this fleece. Wearing this working and around town, I was comfortable up to 65 degrees, but in temperatures higher than that, it would likely be too warm. Similarly, I'd also recommend a light shell or windbreaker while hiking in rainy conditions as there isn't much in the way of water resistance with the openings in the zig zag fleece fabric. The length of the arms is almost perfect, but ever so slightly long and at 5'10", sleeve length is always a concern for me. I like the slim cut of this fleece and opted to size up, so that I could layer underneath. That being said, I haven't had any issues with the fleece fitting comfortably under my primary slim cut shell jackets. I have washed the jacket three times and have noticed a bit of pilling, particularly in the under arm area, but that didn't impact the fleece's performance and was easily ameliorated with a sweater shaver/stone. The one thing that I'd suggest that Patagonia revisit is that although the hidden internal chest pocket is great (and yes, you can fit a phone in there), I would have appreciated two handwarmer pockets, since there aren't thumb holes. Although having no exterior pockets makes it easier to layer or utilize as a true mid-layer. As a final note, the R1 Air is definitely the softest, coziest and most adaptable fleece that I have stumbled upon in a very long time and I highly recommend it.

Let me first start out saying this is a fantastic piece. The warmth to weight ratio with ability to breath is bar none. Just phenomenal. Not to mention its softer than the normal R1's, which I love. So then why 4 stars? The cut is just a little off for me. The shoulders are snug. The back length is a little shorter than I like my cold weather garments to be (or any top, really, but really important in cold weather). I sized up and can't wear a thin wool baselayer underneath for these two reasons. Patagonia's normal R1's fit me overall a lot better. Fix these two things, and this is a slam dunk winner!

The weight of the material is perfect for spring - when you want a bit of warmth but not so that you are sweltering. The AI had me at S but I read some reviews that said to size up. I contacted Patagonia and the customer support person advised me to size up based on my measurements and use (layering piece, with maybe thicker layers underneath). Although quite roomy I'm glad I sized up. I suppose if you're wearing a thin shirt or tank underneath and want a more fitted look you could take your usual size. I am 5'2" (157 cm) and the sweater sits well below hip; I have a 27" inseam FYI. Maybe good if you want to keep your bottom warm or are wearing with leggings (or under a longer shell).

I couldn’t be more impressed with this! It’s super breathable and light all while being warm and cozy. I wore it as a single layer atop a windy mountain and it kept me warm and even blocked the wind pretty well. It will be awesome in even colder temps to layer under a jacket or shell. It’s so lightweight and packable too, and the material is incredibly high quality. As a 34DD gal, I also appreciate that the chest is roomy enough without being boxy- this is my new go to!
I have two of the Patagonia R1 Pullovers in size small. They both fit perfectly, so when I ordered this Patagonia R1 Air Zip-Neck, I naturally ordered a size small. Sadly, the R1 Air is sized much smaller than the R1 and I’m having to exchange it for a medium. REI was very responsive about getting a replacement out to me quickly and I’m happy with the excellent service. But I do recommend sizing up if you are considering the R1 Air Zip-Neck. It is smaller than Patagonia’s normal size “small.”
I bought this in a Large based on my chest size, per the Patagonia size charts. When it arrived and I went to put it on, felt like I was stuffed into a torture device. I went back to Patagonia’s size charts, and they say at the bottom that chest size is usually the best measurement, but if the corresponding hip measurement is too small, then go by your hip measurement. Well, in doing that, I went up to an XL and all was well in the world again. Patagonia does run small, (I’m usually M or L in most brands), so read their size charts for sure. For reference, I’m 5’ 7”, 38” chest, 45” hip, I took off a star bc I think Patagonia is WAY overpriced. I buy when items I’m interested in go on sale. Worth it when 40-50% off; totally overpriced at MSRP in my opinion.
I usually wear size S for Patagonia but probably because this fabric doesnt stretch much and its slim fit, I felt tight around my chest and under arms. Also the internal pocket is very small and cant put my phone inside. Probably just for small keys etc. R1 Pullover and Mens Better Sweater have large pockets and fits my phone so I was expecting the same. I found that Mens size XS R1 Air fits me better than women size S R1 Air Large outside chest pocket with a zipper instead of internal small chest or arm pocket is always a winner for me. I ended up exchanging the item. Over all Patagonia always has an excellent customer service! Thank you!
I also own a standard R1 quarter-zip, and I like the fit of this one better for the following reason: the cuff opening is slightly larger and stretchier. I love being able to push up my sleeves, and the regular R1 cuffs are tighter and more binding (like always catching on my Garmin watch). I don't like tight-fitting fleece, and in my middle-aged body, I buy the XXLs now and hope Patagonia continues with more body-inclusive sizing. I'm an active kayak guide and hiker built like an apple with 38D breasts. Thanks for at least finally adding XXL!My teen calls this the Swifter pad, and he's not far off (bought the green). The texture is different, but makes this R1 very breathable.I'll be curious to see how it wear long term as with the "fleecier" h=face, I don't know ... MoreI also own a standard R1 quarter-zip, and I like the fit of this one better for the following reason: the cuff opening is slightly larger and stretchier. I was curious about how this layer would compare to my tried and true R1 pullover. I took it on a snow backpacking trip this weekend and I have some thoughts. First, I do think it is warmer than my original R1. It wicks moisture well and is nice and breathable. I feel like it fits just a bit more snugly though. I have a S in the original R1 and bought the same size in this and I kinda wish I had tried a M.Unfortunately I do have a dealbreaker with this layer and it is the pocket, or rather, the accessibility of the pocket. I love that the pocket is big enough for my phone (though only barely) but I hate that it's a hidden pocket because you have to unzip the whole neck in order to access the darn pocket which was cold and very annoying! The men's version has a sensible outside access pocket, that is what I want too. I would not buy another women's version of this because a useable chest pocket is something I rate very highly in my outdoor wear.
I bought this R1 Air in size medium. Yes, it runs just slightly narrower than some other Patagonia tops, but I still comfortably have room for a thin long underwear top under it. I don’t feel it’s constricting, because of the way it is cut, there is room under the arm pits. The fabric is light and soft. I love how the zipper comes half way down the front instead of just a quarter way. Makes it easier to get on and off. I also love how the sleeves are the perfect length and this fleece top is long enough too. Both features are So Very important when moving, stretching, working outdoors. Thank you Patagonia for designing this top perfectly! I think it’s true to size for a slim fit top. If you like your tops roomy then go up a size.
