I’ve owned a lot of active fleece midlayers, and Patagonia has this one right! I love the design and how it keeps you warm, but not too warm while on the move. Of course, that’s weather dependent. I run warm, and I’d say this mid layer is good from the mid 30s to about 50 degrees. Anything warmer than that and I heat up super quick. I love the slim fit on this piece as well. Jackets like the micro puff or down sweater have an odd fit for a large, but this fit is just right for me! Definitely one of the best pieces in their line up, and the Fall ‘24 colors are great!

For example, at 60 degrees and above, it gets a little too hot to wear the Patagonia better sweater as an outer layer. But the R1 Air Zip Neck functions perfectly when the weather gets warmer outside. It's incredibly breathable, so if you're actively moving around even in the Spring or Summer, the R1 Air Zip Neck will help to dissipate heat. With a different type of fleece or jacket, you might find yourself taking off the outer layer as the weather warms up. Not the case with the R1 Air Zip Neck. You can leave it on and not overheat. In the wintertime, the R1 Air Zip Neck provides a decent amount of warmth. I would describe the warmth level as light to medium. It's certainly a fleece you can wear comfortably indoors. But the R1 air is not as warm as the Better Sweater -- probably 10 degrees lighter.I used to wear the Better Sweater as often as possible. But now, unless the temperature is cooler, I reach for my R1 Air Zip Neck. It is so darn comfortable and versatile and fashionable. I also need to complement the elastic cuffs -- when you slide the cuffs onto your forearm, the cuffs stay fixed in that position. With many other fleeces, the cuffs fall down to your wrist.I only wish that Patagonia released some better colors for this season. I currently own the black color, and I would say it's the only color in the current lineup that looks traditionally "masculine". I would love to see Patagonia release a Navy, a dark green, the Smoulder blue, a maroon/dark red, a darker oat tan, etc.I literally wear this fleece all the time, and it's only through a lack of marketing that the R1 Air Zip Neck fleece isn't more popular. This is literally Patagonia's best product. I will buy at least two more when they release better colors. If you are between sizes or like a comfortable fit -- I would suggest sizing up. This is a slim fit. I typically wear size large for all of patagonia's products, but I had to size up to XL for the r1 air.

An excellent under layer or on its own as a sweater. It is heavier than I thought but still lighter and a lot more breathable than the Better Sweater. I wear it under various weights of jacket according to the weather and it is incredibly useful. I also just wear it on its own especially around the house because it’s super soft and comfy. DEFINITELY go up a size unless you want it super fitting. I wear large in everything else Patagonia but bought XL in this and it’s perfect. It’s a little long in the body as a result but not so long that it’s an issue. I think I’ll be buying another one!

Great Base Layer on The River
3 April 2024

This is my go-to base layer in fall and winter months when fly fishing. Super light weight and breathable while also retaining plenty of heat. I love the quarter-zip feature - I can zip-up on the colder mornings, and zip-down for extra ventilation as the day gets warmer. Most of the time I end up layering down to just this R1 Air on warmer days in the fall, keeping me cool and dry on the river. I actually just bought a second one the tan color. The only mild compliant I have is the zipper. When zipping up, the zipper tends to get stuck at the seam right before the neck cuff. It takes some effort to get the it all the way up (that is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5). Poor fit, warmer than expected
25 March 2023

I typically love Patagonia products, but this one was a genuine miss for me. My build: 6’2, 185 lbs, chest 41”. Wear a M in all of my other fleeces. They fit comfortably (not tight) over a T. On the advice of others, I bought this one in L. It fits glove tight, uncomfortable and surprising. I would exchange for a larger size to get some breathing room, but then the sleeves would be far too long. Also, while the actual weight (in ounces) of the fleece is indeed lightweight, this is not a light fleece relative to warmth. Far too warm to wear indoors and I don't carry much body fat. Would call it medium and that’s due to the texture of the weave which is like a waffle effect trapping body heat. Too warm for indoors and not what i wanted. I’ll be returning.

R1 'air' (hoody & 1/2 zip'
10 March 2024

Patagonia has hit a homerun with the R1 AIR 's (both full zip & 1/2 zip) Light, very breathable, warm & comfy against your skin. I would have given it 5 star (or at least a 4 1/2) IF the design folks would have used a RAGLAN style sleeve. Luckily it IS pretty stretchy so the seam under the arm/armpit isn't too tight. But this has been an issue for me (5-6 & 140) with several of Patagonia's "slim fit" items ! Nano air - nano air light hybrid- R1 & R2 techface - the underarm seam cuts up into my 'pits' !! :-( and if I size up from SM to MED =it's sloppy everywhere. I'd REALLY like to see Patagonia use the "raglan " style sleeve in their ACTIVE pcs. (like they use in many of the 'Women's' version.

R1 Comparison
16 November 2023

Ive waited about a year to write this review because I wanted to give this product a fair chance. I want to preface that this Is mostly a comparison to my absolutely favorite Patagonia product, the R1 fleece. Ive owned my current R1 for a little over 5 years and it is my favorite article of clothing. Around the house, anytime the weather cools off outside, any chance I get. I wear my R1 to the point that my wife has mentioned multiple times I need to stop because it appears in so many pictures of me and our family that people will think its the only thing I own. I bought the R1 air last year to try and least give myself another option and after a year it gets worn rarely and if given the choice I will always put the R1 on instead. I bought the R1 air last year to try and least give myself another option and after a year it gets worn rarely and if given the choice I will always put the R1 on instead. Some benefits to the Air version: I would say it looks more casual and less technical than the R1, much easier to pull off wearing it to a casual office day over a polo. Thats about it in my opinion. It offers very little stretch compared to the R1 and has always felt a little tight due to the lack of flex. The sleeves lack any elasticity and therefore whenever I went to pull them up I constantly have to adjust compared to the R1 which really stays. I would also say, and again personal preference, I find the original grid pattern to be softer and more appealing against the skin than the Air. The lack of stretch also hurts this piece whenever a true base layer (usually a Smartwool 150) is required underneath. The fit is so tight that it feels almost suffocating and I find movement is also hindered.I think in certain casual scenarios this is a great addition to Patagonias line, but in my opinion I will continue to reach for my tried and true R1 every chance I get. Sorry to my wife it appears it will be in pictures for many years to come.

Terrific, but pocket is too small.
2 November 2023

I have owned many Patagonia garments over the years from various product lines. I continue to find the R1 range to be the most functional garments I own. I use the Air version for pajamas, lounging, casual wear, hiking, cycling, and running. The Air series is very informal due to the wavy fabric, so I wouldn't necessarily wear this to work.To the design team: the pocket is about 1/2" too small in both dimensions! I would wager that over half of prospective buyers of the R1 will own an iPhone. I own a standard size iPhone and do not use a case. I have to really shimmy it into the pocket for it to fit. Any user with a case, Max sized phone, or Android flagship (e.g. Pixel) will be out of luck. This is not a deal breaker for me, but it certainly will be for some users.

Very Warm, Runs Small
3 January 2024

Very warm and the fabric breathes well considering how well it retains heat. Couple of observations after using for about a year. First is the fit. I wear an XL in the original R1 and it fits incredibly. Perfect length, sleeve length and room in shoulders and chest. The R1 Air is much tighter through the chest and shoulders, a little shorter in the arms and seemingly significantly shorter overall. I would size up accordingly. Finally while the fabric is really functional it pills badly after several washings. Not too big of a concern but just worth mentioning. Overall I prefer the original R1 for comfort, fit and durability.

Warm but Fabric Durability Questionable

I'll be returning it - perhaps the pilling would stop where it is, I don't know, but the fabric design just seems too fragile to last years like most Patagonia products.
