Love these lightweight fjord flannel shirts and I have quite a few of them in various colour patterns in my closet. The latest addition is the Sandy Mellon. Fits absolutely great, looks fantastic, versatile and has just enough room for layering over a T-shirt if necessary. Pairs well with jeans or chinos. The colour SandyMellon looks way better in person. I live in a cold region in Canada and I wear flannel shirts about 9 months out of the year. This one is a welcome addition and I’m sure to buy more of the lightweight flannel shirts in the future.

Each year I grow more frustrated with Patagonia shirt offerings. For years my go to shirt was the Patagonia Prima Cotton flannel shirt. Then the production was shipped to China from Portugal and the shirt stopped being flannel and the cut was changed to be similar to a hefty bag. The old shirts were just wonderful and came in a whole variety of colors and even occasionally solids, why this shirt was changed as the basic lightweight flannel I don’t know? The light weight Fjord is more of a mid weight with the mid version being a heavy version. The cut of the Fjord is a little short as it’s always coming out of my pants. There is no reason to have the top on the pocket, it just makes it a pain to get things in and out. function is more important than fashion. I’d regather have a single button in the pocket top to hold it closed if needed. The fabric is very soft though the cut is a little smaller and I’m unsure how the shirt will hold up long term from shrinking when washed. Please make the tails of the shirt ever so slightly longer so it doesn’t pull out of your pants and loose the pocket flap.

I went into the Patagonia store in Honolulu looking to replace an old, hole-filled and wood-glue stained flannel that I had been wearing way past its lifespan and found what might be the most comfortable flannel Ive ever owned. The fabric is very soft. The pattern and colors are great. The fit it slightly loose but that is perfect for the climate I live in: sunny, occasionally breezy with frequent and sporadic light rain. The fit keeps the shirt nice and breathable. Still, when a cool breeze comes through this flannel keeps me comfortable. When work has me inside at a desk under the A/C vent, Im cozy in this shirt. I'm not the biggest fan of this flannel, though it is definitely high quality and fairly warm for a lightweight flannel. I wore this over a capilene cool longsleeve hiking in high 30s/low 40s in Arkansas and I was more than happy enough. My biggest gripe is that it shrinks A LOT and becomes much smaller than a good medium-sized flannel, especially compared to the midweight version which is quite a bit bigger. In my opinion, a flannel should also be a bit "too big" so that it can be layered over a fleece or sweatshirt. Also, the single-pocket design is extremely questionable, especially with how small the pocket is and how the bottom of the pocket doesn't really allow anything to feel secured inside of it. In my opinion, a flannel should also be a bit "too big" so that it can be layered over a fleece or sweatshirt. Also, the single-pocket design is extremely questionable, especially with how small the pocket is and how the bottom of the pocket doesn't really allow anything to feel secured inside of it. Even with a small pair of sunglasses, the pocket barely closes over it, and is essentially full. Adding on top of that, cover flap for the pocket is highly prone to becoming 'crooked' after a wash, which is always the biggest red flag for me when it comes to flannels. For reference, the midweight fjord has two very large pockets, and both have remained sturdy through several washes. If you're looking for a good lightweight flannel option, I would just go with the REI Wallace Lake -- it's cheaper, doesn't seem to shrink nearly as badly, and the two pockets it has are extremely sturdy (arguably sturdier than any flannel I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot).
For years my go to lightweight flannel shirt was the Pima cotton. It always left you with the warm all over feeling when wearing it. Then for some unknown reason the design department went way from the beautiful Portuguese Cotton flannel changing to a non-flannel fabric out of China. Sad day. I buy Patagonia because I expect it to last, the environmental cost of fashion is to high for my liking. When my wife says I can no longer wear my favorite shirts because they have holes in them I’m forced to find a new version of the old Pima Cotton Flannel. This lightweight Fjord shirt is a nice shirt. It’s cut is a touch shorter but I don’t mind it as I often wear it over a light tee or other shirt. I live in the frozen north and in the winter it goes under a sweater, I’ve even used it when ski patrolling or teaching kids skiing, it’s comfortable however I wear it. This is a great shirt almost as good as the old Portuguese Flannel Prima Cotton. Maybe someday that shirt will come back, until then The lightweight Fjord is my new favorite shirt.
I have 4 or 5 of these at this point, most in medium size. I went with a large this time because the medium runs short on me, especially after being washed, and I was kind of disappointed that the difference in size was more pronounced in the width and not the length of the shirt. When I lift my hands above my head it still exposes more midriff than I like. Haha. It kind of stinks because I like the look and overall feel of the shirt otherwise. Patagonia should start to offer tall sizes for us lanky people.
I've been wearing Patagonia flannel shirts happily for years. At present I have several previous generation flannels and several mid weight Fjord shirts. I love them all and wear them daily fall to spring.I received a lightweight Fjord as a gift this year and I'm not super happy with it.- Compared to the previous generation lightweight flannel, the body of the Fjord lightweight is 1-1/2 inches shorter (measured on the back). At 6"2" it's quite short for me. My Fjord mid weights are ~2 inches longer in the body.- Only 1 breast pocket.
This was such a pleasant surprise. Many the time I have ordered what I hoped would be a soft well constructed shirt only to be completely disappointed.First the fit is perfect. Sleeves a long enough to withstand possible shrinking. It’s soft and light weight. It’s what should be the gold standard.Try this shirt if you want satisfaction.
I bought two of these shirts because they are better for me than the mid-weight. They are so soft and comfortable to wear. I bought a size Small in the men’s. Normally I would buy size Medium in women’s. I find some men’s shirts fit me better than women’s. The quality is really good and as usual Patagonia take care with sewing their materials. The material is light but still very warm and less bulky than the mid-weight which is really to be worn as an outside shirt. I prefer to tuck my shirts into jeans. Really recommend these Conversion lightweight shirts.
I've been a customer since day one. As I write this, I'm wearing patagonia gear that spans nearly three decades. The shirt I'm reveiwing is one of those items I've wanted for a long time. They look warm and comfy, and I live in the mountains. But I rarely see a color or design I'd be happy with. Last year I saw one that was, yeah, I could live with that. So I ordered it. Fit is great. Tailoring is superb, and the fabric is very nice. I really wanted another one. Especially since my wife got one remarkably similar to mine... So she ordered the tidepool blue for me. The colors looked promising. When it arrived, I was surprised, and yet not. The colors looked promising. When it arrived, I was surprised, and yet not. Being a photographer, I recognized the problem: some colors just don't reproduce well online, regardless of the quality of monitor. This shirt suffered a bit from that phenomenon. But worse, the photographs don't begin to convey the contrast between the colors and the white. It was blinding, and way more flashy than I care to wear. So, we returned it.I've come to depend on Patagonia for clothes that fit small/skinny people. And many of your designs I treasure. But for many years now, men's colors have ranged from corny to Microsoft. It's as if men couldn't possibly want a piece of clothing that was just drop dead beautiful. And flannel plaids are a perfect place to offer something that is simultaneously masculine and gorgeous. I just don't get it.There was a point when Patagonia's mens clothing colors, and sometimes cut as well, shifted to boring/dirtbag/jcpenny depressed. The only notable recent exception I can come up with is the capilene air crew and hoodies (I own both mens and womens). I bought a mens last year in a knockout dark teal. What an amazing piece of kit!I know you're capable. There's a perspective on life that was once there. And it no longer is.Surprise me next year. Please!
