A great telephoto option!

I used to hate these variable aperture 75-300mm equivalents but I've come to love this one. It's lightweight and sharp from the minium aperture throughout. Often when you need this range, you're either pointing at a lit stage or outside in the sun so the slow aperture is somewhat less of an issue. The extra 100mm vs a 70-200 is quite significant. I think it offers just enough for some amateur birding/wildlife. Great lens and I continue to use it in professional work myself.

When purchasing the Lumix G85 that came equipped with a very good 12-60 lens, I decided we would need a lens with more zoom capabilities. The Lumix Vario 45-150 telephoto lens happened to be on sale for $149 at the time so I added that to the camera purchase. I am glad I did! The lens is extremely light and well made. Attaching it to the G85 is simple and fast and the quality of the photos is fantastic. The zoom ring is easy to yet precise and since it is a Vario lens auto focusing works just as well as the 12-60 lens. It also has manual focus if needed via another smooth ring on the lens and has an anti-shake mechanism that works in addition to the built in feature of the G85 itself. The photos are crisp and not grainy even at maximum zoom range. So far so good! I've used this a few times so far and it hold up extremely well. Need a lens that wouldn't break the bank but filled in the gaps of my other lens lengths and am extremely satisfied. Don't be scared of the mostly plastic construction, I feel like it makes it lighter than some others because of that. Doesn't make me nervous about how it'll hold up over time one bit.

Good cheap lens for beginners or those saving for a better one

In addition to this lens, I have the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 and the Panasonic 100-300mm f4-5.6 (Since there wasn't a better super zoom lens on the market that will autofocus). I use these lenses with my Panasonic GH4 mostly for car racing, but also some occasional landscapes, portraits and pet photos. I really want the Panasonic 35-100m f/2.8, but after dropping a lot of cash on a new camera body ($1500) and two nice lenses ($1000 + $500); another $1000 wasn't a wise choice right away. So I got this lens to hold me over until Christmas, a birthday or something else comes along that will allow me to justify spending that much money on one lens (I will then sell this lens to recoup the majority of what I spent on it). So I got this lens to hold me over until Christmas, a birthday or something else comes along that will allow me to justify spending that much money on one lens (I will then sell this lens to recoup the majority of what I spent on it). I love my Panasonic setup and haven't really had any issues with this lens while shooting landscapes, which is pretty much all I've used it for so far. I did use it at the track, but stuck mostly to my 100-300mm f/4-5.6 lens because of limited access. (It was the best superzoom on the market that autofocuses.) It does autofocus very quickly and zooms smoothly. The primary focal lengths are clearly marked and easy to match up because the zoom is so smooth and accurate. There's no roughness, it's easy to change focal lengths but it also stays out pretty well. Obviously it will probably have some zoom creep if you leave it angled downwards like any zoom lens would, but otherwise it feels solid and like it's good quality. It focused on both fast moving race cars and landscapes while driving on the freeway. For what this lens is, it's really nice. I haven't really used it much, but I was amazed at how much nicer it is than my previous Canon lenses. The Canon lenses were on the low end of the price scale, but were actually the same amount of money or more when I bought them as these were. I suppose not needing so much material allows manufacturers to put nicer quality glass and parts in to relatively cheap lenses. The weight and price differences between my old Canon setup and my new Panasonic kit is the reason I switched to micro 4/3 in the first place. I realized I could buy everything (camera body, lenses, flash, accessories) for way less than the cost of one lens, and what completely sold me was how small and light everything is. My whole kit weighs less than that one lens too, and I would also need a much bigger, heavier and more expensive lens in addition to that to really get anywhere near the amount of zoom I need. (That one is over $11k for anyone wondering and it weighs 8 pounds.) I am a small woman and I have a lot of chronic pain and problems because of a bad car accident several years ago, so even a 1 pound lens is too much sometimes. Anyways, back to the lens. I love how small, light and cheap this lens is. It's not the absolute best quality lens you can get, but it's also super cheap (especially when purchased used) and surprisingly nice for the price. The inescapable fact of micro 4/3 is that the aperture of any lens is affected by the crop factor of the format and when you get a lens that has a rather limited speed (speed is another way of talking about aperture) to begin with, it really affects things, especially when you want a nice bokeh effect. For the type of photography I do, the trade off is worth it; but it really, really makes the more expensive lenses that much more necessary for those who use manual or semi-manual modes. That being said, if you do a lot of landscape photography, group photos, or are just a broke beginner, this is a great starting lens. It's certainly much better than the Canon lenses I used before changing systems. This lens is very capable of getting very decent pictures while you're saving for the more expensive one or just learning and the fact that you can choose between black and silver is a bonus. I personally really enjoy having a silver lens in my kit. It stands out nicely and makes it even easier to switch lenses without having to really look at them first. As for the rating I gave this, I was debating whether to give this four stars since it really won't measure up to the better quality lenses or five stars because it is much better than one would expect considering the price and spec differences. I ultimately decided it deserves five stars because you really can't expect a lens that's under $300 to compare to one that's $1k. It deserves five stars because it's that good for the price.

Good lens for the price

This lens is an excellent value in my opinion. I recently shot photos exclusively with this lens and my Panasonic Lumix G7, in Maui. I was impressed with the sharpness and color captured in my pictures. I primarily shoot landscape pictures, so I was concerned about the lack of weather sealing on this lens. I am happy to say I had no issues while shooting in tropical environments and on the beach!

Great Price / Value Lens
16 June 2023

I purchased this lens as a greater zoom for my Lumix G9 that had the Leica 12-60mm lens that came with the camera. I needed more reach for simple shots as I take a lot of wildlife pictures - @ $150 this is a solid lens and recommended if you're looking for a mid-range, intermediate quality lens. So far images are great and perfect for the amateur photographer! Now the question is whether I also want even more reach with the 100-300mm?

Low image quality
18 December 2023

This lens is decently built and has a great zoom range. However, the image sharpness is extremely lacking at all focal lengths and aperture values. I am not someone who is particularly concerned with having the sharpest lenses possible, yet I still found myself coming back from the field with shots that I felt were almost unusable because of how soft the focus looked. Sharpening in post didn’t help much. I am planning to sell this lens and upgrade to the 35-100 f/2.8 instead.

Never less than "good" IQ at any setting

The 45-150mm is the logical "next buy" after your kit lens for a M4/3 camera. This takes off where the kit lens reaches - 42mm/45mm and extends up to 150mm. Few of us need more than 300mm full-frame equivalent that this gives with M4/3 cameras. The weight and size advantage of the 45-150mm over the 45-200mm Lumix lens is significant - making it a great choice to fit into a small camera bag. It also shares the 52mm filter thread of the 14-42mm mark II - meaning you need only one size of lens filters. The tests show that rosolution is at optimum even at the widest aperture and is never less than "good" over the whole range. The AF is quick and accurate. The OIS is worth 3 stops for me. I am certainly impressed. I also have the 35-100mm, which is great if space really is at a premium, but find myself using this 45-150mm more and more in its place. Don't forget to use the lens hoods - mirrorless cameras are prone to internal reflactions without them.

One of the best MFT lenses for the price range
3 June 2023

Upgraded my Panasonic GH4 with this lens from the kit lens. For wildlife photography this lens has been an excellent addition to my kit. It’s extremely sharp for what I need and I’m able to get very good background separation from the subject. Compared to my aps-c counterpart this lens packs, a greater punch in a smaller package. I purchased this lens on sale for $250 and it has completely blown away my expectations.
