I have been ordering from chewy for the past 2 years and never had an issue, until now. I order the 50lb box of hay because I have a dozen guinea pigs who go through hay like it's going out of style. When I got the 1st box of hay, when I opened it to my surprise it was dead and i mean like brown & dried up kind of dead. It had looked like as if they had one serious drought, cut it down right before it was about to expire for good, boxed it up and shipped it out. So I called in and they sent me out a new box, but when I opened this box it was not hay, it was grass. So I called back for a 2nd time and they sent another replacement this time it wasn't great, but it wasn't dead, its jusy very very course, a whole lot of straw and very dry. I think it's time for a new option

I’m giving this 5 stars because this time all the hay pieces are soft and green. However, I do have plenty shipments that have lots of hard, brown pieces that my guinea pigs won’t touch. If you are buying a 25-50 pound box, there is a chance it will not be the best quality so beware. However, I’ve heard they are understanding and will replace a bad batch if you ask (but I am not 100% certain because I’ve never done this).Overall, if you are looking for an affordable option from a brand you trust, I 100% recommend this one. Make sure to buy the 25-50 pound box for best price. For reference, I buy a 25 pound box for my two adult guinea pigs and it lasts me almost exactly 4 months. I would buy the 50 pound box if I had a big enough container!

I always get my 50lb bale of hay from Chewy/Oxbow because it can be delivered fast. I am usually very happy with the quality (and so are my bunnies!). I docked a star this time around because sometimes there are strange, fibrous grasses with what I assume are seeds? I guess the hay has flowered and seeded? I am not sure what it is, but both my bunnies refuse to eat it. This causes the majority of the hay to be wasted. It's happened to me a couple of times, I assume because of the season and when the hay was harvested. Usually Oxbow hay comes really fresh and green. I would still recommend this item but just be aware this can happen sometimes - maybe your bunnies are less picky than mine!

POTENTIAL HEALTH RISK
2 December 2023

I found a petrified DEAD rodent squished flat all busted open and mummified tangled around pieces of hay in a 90 oz bag of timothy hay. This poses many health risks as wild rodents carry diseases and so does ROT. I've sent oxbow a concern/complaint and they haven't even acknowledged the health risk to myself or my animals or even cared to email me back. This is absolutely DISGUSTING especially considering this is supposed to be such a good and expensive brand. You're better off buying a cheaper brand. I've had guinea pigs my entire life and have only been using oxbow for 4 years and never ONCE have I found anything so putrid in ANY other brand. The crazy thing about all of this is this is not the first complaint about dead rodents in the food, oxbow knows they have ... MoreI found a petrified DEAD rodent squished flat all busted open and mummified tangled around pieces of hay in a 90 oz bag of timothy hay. Quality went downhill
29 July 2023

Have been using oxbow timothy hay for 1.5 years for my guinea pigs and noticed the quality went downhill these past 3 months. I ordered 3 90oz bags, and the first 2 bags have thick and long plastic-looking hay that my guinea pigs refused to eat. Normally when I got home from work the hay would mostly be gone already, but this time no, they left a lot of those plastic-looking hay and didn’t eat them. Feel like I’m wasting my money on the hay. Then the recent 3rd bag I bought last week, the quality was way worse. It has weird smell when I open the bag, feel like rotten banana smell or something very not fresh inside. Many hay already turned brownish inside, which looked extremely sad when I gave them to my guinea pigs. Very disappointed in this big brand. I hope they can improve the hay quality soon but for now I won’t be getting hay from Oxbow, wasting my money and not healthy for my guinea pigs.

So disappointed with Oxbow! Not the same hay quality it used to be
7 February 2024

I have been buying hay from Oxbow for the past 25+ years, long before they became mainstream in pet supply stores. The hay (timothy, orchard grass, alfalfa) was always excellent quality. Over the last few years, however, the quality of Oxbow hay has become extremely inconsistent. It is no longer a premium hay product.I have received hay that is desiccated and very rough (straw-like) with long pieces that are totally inappropriate for small animals such as rabbits and Guinea pigs. The hay would not even be suitable for horses and cows to eat - the only thing it could be used for is stall bedding!I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the hay quality took a nosedive when Manna Pro Products acquired Oxbow Animal Health in January 2022. Manna Pro is owned by the global investment firm Carlyle - so, unfortunately, it seems that Oxbow, which began as a family-owned hay farming operation in Omaha, Nebraska, is now part of a large enterprise focused on profit above quality.

Toxic Plant Mixed into Hay
28 March 2023

I have been buying this hay in 9 lb boxes for my bunnies for years at my vet’s recommendation. In the last year or so I have noticed the quality has really gone down, but yesterday morning was my final straw. I heard my bunny munching on something that didn’t sound like hay, so I snatched it away immediately and it was a HIGHLY TOXIC BLACK HENBANE PLANT that was mixed into his hay!!! This plant is incredibly toxic to animals AND people, with all parts of the plant being poisonous. Thankfully after watching my bunny like a hawk all day, it seems like he didn’t eat enough to make him sick. It makes me sick to think of what could have happened if I hadn’t noticed right away and taken it from him. He could have gotten incredibly sick or even died. It makes me sick to think of what could have happened if I hadn’t noticed right away and taken it from him. He could have gotten incredibly sick or even died. I then deep cleaned his enclosure to make sure there were no remnants left behind. The plant was shedding tiny, lightweight seeds that spread easily and I did not want any left behind. I have opened a case with Chewy as well as Oxbow about this, as this is a very serious quality control concern. Last year I also found a huge dead grasshopper (maybe 6 inches long) mixed in with the hay, and overall the quality has been very hit or miss in recent years. I will be switching to a new brand immediately, but unfortunately I stocked up so I now have 3 boxes of hay that I don’t feel comfortable with feeding my bunnies.

We've been feeding our French lop Oxbow Western Timothy Hay for the past 3 yr and his vets have been very impressed with how healthy his GI tract has been. He's 4 yrs old and never have GI stasis or other GI issues until the past 3 weeks, when we received the latest shipment of Timothy Hay. It's the only change in his diet (not by our choice but the quality of the hay). It's very dusty and very thin so he's not getting the fiber he needs. He's had 2 bouts of GI stasis since using this box of hay, his poops still are very dark, small and moist. We showed his vet the quality of this hay and she believes it might actually be Orchard grass and not the Western Timothy Hay as shown in the box. Wouldn’t be my first choice
6 September 2024

I almost always buy the same brand of hay to avoid issues. Seeing as hay is the most important part of a rabbits diet it’s important to get high quality clean hay. I don’t usually buy Oxbow hay because the smaller bags in the pet stores are usually very powdery/fine pieces but that’s the only issue I’ve had. I figured with the big box maybe that wouldn’t be a problem and decided to try it out. Since receiving this, I have pulled out multiple grocery bags worth of brown dead hay clumps. It is also so unbelievably dusty, which isn’t good for rabbits. Every time I go to fill their hay I have to sort out the next brown clump I come across and go into a sneezing fit with the dust coming out of the hay. My air purifier in the next room kicks on even. I have been using Oxbow Western Timothy Hay for over twelve years, with 1 guinea pig, then 2 guinea pigs and now a rabbit for over two years. I have to say that I am extremely disappointed in the quality of the hay over the last couple of years. When I first started usin this product, I remember opening the first bag I bought ... smelled like fresh cut hay :) Over the last two years, a good percentage of each bag is more like straw than hay, yellow and har my rabbit won't touch it. Now this most recent bag I purchased about two weeks ago, is loaded with stalk-like sticks that look like they jammed up the harvester :( ... they are over a quarter inch thick and look inedible.
