Picked up this jacket at the end of October and really happy with my purchase. This has been my "go-to" to anything from 40f down to active/hiking in 9f and it does it all well. The fit is definitely skinnier/trimmer which I like. I also like how the shoulders/arms are made of a denser/thicker nylon which appears to add more durability without adding weight or weird fitment.Overall this jacket is great--my only nitpick is that I feel OR cheaped out on the arm (wrist) cuffs. They're not super tight fitting or adjustable so depending on what type of gloves you have they might not create a windproof/snowproof fit.

I spent a lot of time deciding on my first down jacket. Since moving to a colder part of NC, I decided this year that it was a necessity. Despite the relatively high price tag, I haven't babied this jacket at all. After my first camping session of Winter, I came home to realize the nylon cord that cinches the hood was ripped in half. I tied the two halves of cord together and called it functional. A few weeks later, I discovered the same had happened with the waist cinch cord. While looking over the construction of the jacket, I will say it leaves a lot to be desired. The stitching is loose in places and overstitched in others. I've had to trim away loose stitches a few times already. I already have acquired one small rip in the wrist area of the jacket, which I patched with a piece of my sleeping pad patch. This may seem like a lot of negative feedback, but overall I am very happy with the jacket. I love the color, I love the water/snow resistance, and I love the warmth it provides. Also, when you roll it up it makes a nice firm camp pillow. The only change I would recommend is stronger material like that on the shoulders/hood on the forearm area, stronger nylon cinch cord, and better QC with regards to construction.

Bought this jacket a few weeks ago on sale to replace a 34 year old puff-a-lump down jacket and to supplement a synthetic pile jacket I keep in the bottom of my backpack on winter and shoulder season hikes in our local mountains. Great jacket. Definitely more trim and lighter than either of the fore mentioned jackets. Warm, but not excessively so.Wore it on a day of volunteering as a ranger at a popular Northeastern state park this weekend during both training and serving. Had to pack it away while ascending to the summit, as one would routinely de-layer to avoid overheating.Would definitely recommend it, as almost any other Outdoor Research garment I own and regularly wear on hikes.

I had an older predecessor to this coat which I really liked, but was plagued by a low quality main zipper that eventually broke. The OR customer service team was very helpful with some diy solutions to try(that didn't work) and eventually sent me a credit to purchase a new coat. The warranty process was kinda slow compared to other outdoor brands but I'm not complaining bc they allowed me to get a new coat:)When my warranty credit finally arrived in my inbox I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect replacement and settled on the helium down hoodie. The coat is very comfy and lightweight. I got the pewter color and it's true to color on the website.I have no idea about durability since I haven't had the coat for more than a few days.I'm 5'10" 185lbs with ...Ā MoreI had an older predecessor to this coat which I really liked, but was plagued by a low quality main zipper that eventually broke. The coat is very comfy and lightweight. I got the pewter color and it's true to color on the website.I have no idea about durability since I haven't had the coat for more than a few days.I'm 5'10" 185lbs with an athletic, slightly stocky build so I often fall in that weird zone between a medium and large.I originally picked a medium since my chest measures 40" and I have a 34" waist, and I didn't want a ton of extra material since I only layer a tee shirt or a tee shirt and wool half zip under the coat. The medium was tighter than I expected through the torso so I had to return and get a large which is slightly big (long in the sleeves, a little too much room in the chest, and it's kind of long) but it'll work a lot better. So basically my advice is measure 3 time order once. If you are on the top end of the measurement range maybe consider sizing up or trying to find the coat at a local retailer to try it on since you have to pay shipping to return.
I bought this for a warmer insulating layer, expecting it to be warmer than my Arcā Atom AR.. Boy was I disappointed. It was probably 0*F with no wind and my Atom can usually handle that with a mid-weight wool long sleeve underneath, but I was FREEZING with this hoody. I did not experience great heat retention, and whenever I would bend my arm, I could feel the cold on the outside of the jacket soaking through the down.Couple more issues.. I ordered the Redrock color and the color is a dark burnt orange, but the zippers.. are purple. Yes.. purple. I almost laughed out loud, because the chest logo is a dark gray and then you have purple zippers. I donāt really understand that. The elastic on the cuffs is also a little loose, not that big of a deal but might be an ...Ā MoreI bought this for a warmer insulating layer, expecting it to be warmer than my Arcā Atom AR.. The elastic on the cuffs is also a little loose, not that big of a deal but might be an issue from a longevity standpoint. The low pockets are kind of weird, at least for me. I am used to jackets having the pockets raised up from the hem to allow for harnesses for climbing or packs belts. These pockets are low and the bottom of the pocket is at the level of the hem.On a positive note, the fit of this jacket was fantastic. I purchased a L and I am 5ā10ā 195# with an athletic build and 33ā waist. Jacket has a straight hem cut, which isnāt ideal for harnesses, but for hiking it would be just fine. I also did not notice any down loss, so the seams must be good!Maybe I got a poorly filled jacket because the loft and warmth was not what I was expecting for 800 fill hoody. Along with the odd colored zippers and low pockets, it is enough reason for me to return and I will be trying out the Rab Electro Pro as a replacement.
At this price point the features and fit/finish of this jacket is hard to believe. Is it the lightest..no, warmest..no, fit the best..(subjective), but it strikes an impressive balance of utility making the range with which to use it pretty darn big. I'm 5'10", 160 lbs w/longish arms. Normally I'd grab a M, but as a lightweight belay jacket as in this case I got the L, which is perfect. I've got other high-end down jackets for specific things (ice climbing, long shoulder season multi-pitch, etc.) but this is the one I grab for everything else. It packs down enough for a leader pack, perfect for cragging, backpacking/hiking, and the one I wear to work. If I had to change one thing and one thing only, I'd ask for a slightly bigger hood to get more coverage when ...Ā MoreAt this price point the features and fit/finish of this jacket is hard to believe. Have owned this jacket for about a year now and have tested it in various Canadian weather conditions, going down to -20C. Super lightweight and surprisingly warm for how thin it feels. I originally bought it for trips to and from the gym in the Winter, but it's now my go to jacket for casual outings and outdoor excursions when the temps are below +10C or conditions are wet and rainy. Good on its own down to -5C to - 10C, and still keeps you warm down to -20C to -25C with layers underneath. I'm 5'10", 165 lbs, 41" chest and the Medium fits well. I usually like my jackets tapered at the bottom so I have the waist elastics cinched up all the way. The only thing I personally could see improving is the elastic cuffs on the sleeves. I have had a few days on the trail with this coat and so far really love it. The temps have not been all that cold but we hit the high 40s with 20 mph winds. The coat kept me plenty warm with just a t-shirt underneath. It really blocked the wind and shed the minor amount of moisture we saw. I really liked the hood, toasty warm on my bald head and the elastic adjustment had it fitting perfectly. The coat packs down real well and puff right back very quickly.Sizing. I generally wear large, nearly 100%of the time. I ordered a XL based on some other reviews and it was perfect. I would describe myself as 6ft 220lb and a mix of athletic and dad bod. I generally want a large tall for the length in the torso and the arms. The XL hits all the marks on size. Plenty of space to fit a base and mid layer as well. While this jacket isn't the lightest in it class it might be the most durable. As someone who goes crashing through the bushes from time to time I'm happy with how durable the material appearsSo far I'm very happy with this coat. We will see how it does this winter
I used this jacket on a recent trip to Arches NP. On one of the days, it never got above 19 degrees F but I stayed warm with a Patagonia Capilene (circa 1998) and a Patagonia Retro Pile Fleece under the OR Helium. It was awesome. However, I would rate the hike as mostly easy and a little bit of moderate.I then decided to hike at midnight with temperature at 10 F. Why? I donāt know why? This time, it was mostly moderate with a couple of hard sections. I was drenched with sweat and soon after I reached the summit and rested for a minute, I immediately got cold because of the sweat on my body. I pulled out my phone from the OR Helium chest pocket and it was wet with beads of sweat.Should I have unzipped my jacket? Perhaps! Keeps me warm in -5 to 5 C temps. It kept me dry in light drizzle. I like the lightweight feature of the jacket so it doesn't drag me down. It probably works best in dry conditions where you are not super active like a short walk or lounging about. It did keep some fierce wind out when walking near the ocean and the tightening feature of the hood helped keep the wind out. After the first wash though, I did notice some small feathers coming out and have noticed a feather sticking out from the back after about 10 or so times wearing it. If you can get this jacket with discounts I think it is worth it if you are looking for a lightweight puffy.
