I bought this for the Camino Frances and used it for 500 miles from St Jean Pied de Port to Muxia. This was quite possibly the perfect pack for this adventure. It would have been too big if I had not been carrying camera equipment, but it was ideal for my needs. I have used Osprey packs for years (I carried an Exos for 3000km in New Zealand) and am always satisfied. The Stratos 36 was perfect for a hike from hostel to hostel every night. The suspension kept the pack away from my back and rode quite nicely every day for two months. Additionally, the sleeping bag compartment being completely isolated from the main compartment made it the perfect place to keep my rain gear. Knowing that wet rain gear would be isolated from the rest of my pack was very comforting. ... MoreI bought this for the Camino Frances and used it for 500 miles from St Jean Pied de Port to Muxia. First the "removable" sleeping pad straps were only removable when I cut them off. It would have been nice to preserve them in case I needed them later, but I suppose straps are cheap.Second, I missed the front stash pocket. Maybe I've just grown accustomed to having that stuff pocket, but I really missed having that in Spain. The front zipper pocket was OK, I kept my camp shoes in it, but the stuff pocket would have been nicer.Overall, this pack was perfect for my time on the Camino. I absolutely would use it again and probably will if I go back to walk another route to Santiago!

The Stratos 36 is favorite pack in this size range to date, and I'd give it a 4.75/5. Excellent for day hikes to an overnight. The combination of the tall, narrow, close-to-body shape with the frame, suspension & hip belt all work extremely well together to make for a comfortable carry even with heavy loads that doesn't sway or feel unstable. Does a phenomenal job of putting the weight on your hips and not on your shoulders or back. Very important. Having the side zip access is a HUGE plus for being a top loader! Zippers all operate well, the stow-on-the-go pole storage is unbeatable, and the magnetic hydration bite valve attachment on the chest strap is a really nice touch. For a 36L, I feel it doesn't fit quite as much gear as much as some other 36L packs I believe due to the Airspeed back panel and shape of the pack, but it's well worth the comfort and breathability the Airspeed contributes. It's a little heavy compared to some other options, but again the comfort is well worth the slightly heavier pack and the extra comfort the Stratos offers I feel offsets it not being an ultralight pack anyway. The only improvements I would like to see are (1) a little more flexibilty throughout the pack. This is of course asking to have the cake and eat it too, and may be a lot to ask for given the comfort-driven design, but it is a bit stiff when doing lots of twisting, turning, scrambling, etc, and (2) the textured fabric on the shoulder straps can be a little scratchy on my neck when turning/twisting a bunch, so a softer material on the upper-inside of the shoulder straps where is can rub would be appreciated. Those two things (plus maybe a little more pocket/organization?) would make the Stratos 36 a true 5/5! Even as is, I'd highly recommend it.

It performs great on the technical side of things--hiking, climbing, and for such a small pack it carries heavy loads with ease. The suspension is excellent as to be expected by Osprey, and the pack back breathes really well (my back stayed cool while others in my group were drenched in sweat). It's also made of more durable materials than your average technical pack which was appreciated when shoving the pack on the various cramped forms of local public transit in Tanzania. The pockets are excellent, allowing for great organization and are super well placed. The side compression straps and sleeping bag straps on the bottom allow the pack to function as a larger bag if you need it. The side compression straps and sleeping bag straps on the bottom allow the pack to function as a larger bag if you need it. As a travel bag, the pack is a little bulky for its size due to the long and narrow profile (a trade off since this shape is what makes it carry so well). It fits in overhead bins due to the narrow profile, but wouldn't be my first choice for travel unless your trip has technical objectives. This is because the frame prevents you from packing the bag down even smaller, and adds size to the pack but not internal volume. I wish the brain and hip-belt were removable but the frame prevents you from making the pack much smaller anyway. In conclusion an excellent pack in terms of performance, and lot's of great organization that's actually very intuitive and useful. Perfect for backpacking, thru-hiking, milder mountaineering, cragging, and as an awesome and flexibile general purpose bag in this size. The suspension, hard frame sheet, and durable materials means it can carry whatever you can throw into it and you don't have to baby it like you would a more lightweight pack. That being said, it wouldn't be my first choice for alpine climbing or travel (unless your trip involves lot's of outdoor pursuits) because the frame style makes the pack relatively bulky for its size, and you can't strip the pack down and remove things like a good alpine pack; however it's not marketed or designed for these activities. Great pack from a great brand.

This has become my go-to day hiking pack. As someone who tends to over-prepare for day hikes in the White Mountains and Adirondacks, I have found that the Stratos 36 has the perfect amount of space to fit my 3L hydration bladder, rain jacket, 2 dry mid-layers, extra socks and shirts, a packable down jacket, hat and gloves, headlamp, keys, wallet, and snacks. I also use the side pockets to hold my water bottle and filter, and I really like using the hip pockets to store my phone and/or a few energy bars. There isn't room for much else; therefore, it would not be feasible for me to use this as my pack on an overnight trip. Of note is the fact that the sleeve for the hydration bladder is not tremendously roomy--in fact, in order to get it to fit I need to pack the full bladder prior to placing anything else into the bag.I have also used this pack with much less gear. Even though it may look a little silly to use it on a four-hour hikes, it's worth it from an ergonomic standpoint: this pack fits me much better than any other similar-capacity pack that I own. Some reviewers wish that there was a pocket on the back of the pack rather than a zipper, but it isn't a huge deal to me--there are pros and cons to both. This is where I tend to keep my rain jacket, hat, and gloves, and I like how they aren't exposed to elements due to be zipped away. I really appreciate how a side zipper allows you to access equipment inside the main compartment without unbuckling the "brain".The "Osprey Squeak" was fairly noticeable on my first hike with the Stratos (I had it packed pretty much to full capacity), though I don't remember hearing it on any other occasions.Overall, I really like this pack for longer day hikes during which one expects to experience a variety of temperatures. However, without expensive, highly packable gear I don't believe that you'll be able to use it for overnights. Right now, I'm finding myself in an awkward situation where I don't want to return this pack, but I know that I'll have to buy a larger-capacity pack for overnight backpacking trips.
I just picked up a higher end e-bike and a second battery so I can always recharge the batteries at zero capacity for its longevity. Since there is no 2nd mount on the bike for a second battery I bought this bag to carry its 20lb weight along with other stuff like a 3L water pack and bike locks. I hardly notice the weight with all the adjustments the bag has, but most of all the suspension on the back pack makes carrying that weight a surreal feel. The weight is evenly distributed and fits snug on my back. Now I can go the distance with carrying a second battery. The bag carrying that weight compared to others is like night and day!
I really like the Osprey Men's Stratos 36 Pack. This is not the first I've had. I sent the old one off to be repaired, but I needed one to hike with while I wait, so bought another. The new version seems smaller and after using three times and making adjustments I haven't figured out how to get it to fit correctly. Maybe I should have bought the larger pack, but hey, I am only 5'6".Anyhow the new pack has a new zip compartment on the back instead of two on the top, which is okay and allows a little more storage space. But the real drawback is the main compartment can only be accessed from the top. I first bought the Manta 34. I was looking for a pack I could mainly carry for extended day hikes, carry on to a plane and for occasional extended hikes over a few nights. Manta fit the bill, I thought. I found the hip belt pockets which I use constantly to be difficult to zip back up. Strike 1. Second, i did a 3 night hike to an inn so had to bring along a good bit of stuff. While everything fit, it was too much weight for this pack. Strike 2. Third, I'm not a big bladder user so didnt care for taking space for a separate bladder compartment. I decided to try the Stratos 36. No doubt it can handle more weight. It is taller and skinnier which fits my 6'4" frame better. It is a top loader which is not my preference, but has a side zip for easy access into the main ... MoreI first bought the Manta 34. It is a top loader which is not my preference, but has a side zip for easy access into the main compartment. Thats critical. The stow on the go poles option works great. And I thought I would miss the stretchy back pocket but find I like the security of the zipper for stuff, especially when traveling on a plane. There were some things on the Manta 34 I liked better. I liked the organizational pockets, the easier access to side stretchy water bottle pocket, not a top loader and 34L without a top lid. But just not heavy duty enough and I couldn't deal with the hip belt pockets. The Stratos just feels more heavy duty when you put it on. It is now my go to after a week of hiking in Ystone and Glacier including carrying it on my biking to Logan Pass at Glacier. Highly tecommend.
When I was looking for a pack, I knew I wanted a multi-purpose bag that would work for unpredictable day hikes, travel, and longer, lightweight overnighters. This pack fits each of these categories so well: the body cinches down on day hikes and doesn't flop around, fits easily in a (larger) overhead bin on a plane, and have used during warm overnight backpacking trips. It's not the lightest pack around, but what you get in return in hearty fabric. This pack is tough. Had to bushwhack through a section of trail and barely a scratch was left on the pack, save for a snag on the water bottle holders. The integrated raincover is great (and removable!) and fits over this pack and over any gear you might have stowed externally. The integrated raincover is great (and removable!) and fits over this pack and over any gear you might have stowed externally. I've carried around 30lbs comfortably, and the suspension keeps everything nice and centered over my hips. This is a great pack. However, there are two things that would take this pack to a perfect 5-star to me. 1) Larger water bottle pockets and 2) a stretch mesh external pocket.I can barely fit a standard nalgene in the side pockets, the elastic up top is cinched almost flush with the pack and does not expand much at all. I use these primarily now for tent poles and maybe a slim water bottle. This would be such an easy fix.And another easy fix would be to remove the silly front zipper. This compartment does not get much use from me, besides holding a map. The zipper is chunky, the fabric seems chunkier here as well, and the center position makes putting anything else inside a chore. Unlike many of their other popular packs (the Exos and Atmos come to mind) that have this FANTASTIC strechy mesh that doubles as a perfect stash pocket surrounding the front, this pack lacks it. With this fix, a puffy, hat and gloves, and rain jacket are immediately removed from the main compartment to the outside, making this a serviceable long-distance pack.
Can't go 5-star, sorry. Would love to go 4.25, but alas....The Good:Pack is great, lightweight, intuitive to use and pack, and has lots of features. The Airspeed suspension is really good and the weight distribution once dialed in is fantastic. The access to the hip belts is easy and the storage in each is fair. I would strongly recommend you get the one with the lid - you won't regret it (wish it was removable, but no real worries there). The gear loops at the bottom are a god-send for seats, bedrolls, whatever.BUT, I would love to be able pack a little more for the full day / overnight. With a 2-person tent, rain gear / jackets / layers, sleeping pad, camping seats, and other gear, you need more storage. Daisy chains would be just the ticket to lash an extra seat / jacket / whatever to. I like to listen to music on the trail through a bluetooth speaker, and the only place to secure it is through the zipper loop on the front access pocket. The Bad:The hydration sleeves are WAY too high and are WAY too small. While on the trail, I cannot reach back and get my water bottle into the sleeves - I have to have someone do it for me. If I really fight, concentrate and work at it for a few minutes, I guess I could get my thin Camelbak Podium bottle in, but forget getting a Nalgene bottle in by yourself. A Nalgene bottle fits into the sleeves extremely snugly - no wiggle room. Which is another reason daisy chains would be great - lash them to the back. <-- this is the only real gripe I have; I can add daisy chains, I can't change the hydration sleeves.Bottom line - this is a super pack for a day hike / single overnight. It's feature-rich - the suspension is great, the airflow is sweet, internal storage is adequate, nice side-access to the main pack, wish the lid was removable, wish it had more external storage options and the hydration sleeves are kind of a bummer.
This pack is great! My husband used it for the first time today and didn’t have one complaint during our 11 mile hike. It packed his rain gear, food, 4 liters of water and other misc gear just fine with room to spare. He was very please with how comfortable the pack was and he also appreciated the different straps to get the pack more customized to his body. His big backpack we use for multi day hikes doesn’t have a frame, well a minimalist frame if you will, and so he appreciated this backpacks structure. He loves the blue color as well. It has plenty of different places to stuff little things here and there and he also likes the rain cover that is included. It has its own little pocket at the bottom of the pack. Great bag for long day hikes !
