I have used this bag on 3 medical mission trips and it has been flawless. The material is extremely durable and the backpack is comfortable in the airport. The ability to hide the straps comes in handy for carry on or checking the bag. The ability to separate the bags and reattached them in under a minute saves so much time and is very convenient. The main attraction to the bag is that it is carry-on compliant in the US. I tend to use the smaller bag as my personal item and day pack and have the main bag as a duffle once I get to my gate. The versatility to leave your main bag at the hotel and just go explore or do work with the smaller bag works amazingly well. I tend to carabiner my water bottle to the personal bag inside the water bottle sleeve cause it is tight. ... MoreI have used this bag on 3 medical mission trips and it has been flawless. I bought this bag for a two week trip to Japan and it was beyond perfect! With lots of train rides and walking around between hostels, this bag was great to have. It had plenty of room for everything I needed with room to spare for fun souvenirs. The hidden backpack straps and hip belt made carrying it around very comfortable, and much easier than trying to mess around with large rolling luggage, which made my friends SUPER jealous, especially with the number of stairs we had to go up and down. The removable daypack was perfect for day adventures when I wanted to leave my clothes and things back at the hostel with enough room for a rain shell, water, snacks, cameras, and any knick-knacks I picked up along the way. It was also perfect for taking through the airport as my carry-on as it comfortably held my computer and large headphones, so I could kick back and watch my movies on the 12 hour plane ride. The only downside I noticed when using this bag was when I got back home one of the exterior compression strap buckles broke at some point while going through baggage handling. Its an easy fix, and since it happened as I was getting home it wasn't an issue at all. I would recommend picking up an Airporter to go along with it for extra protection if you are planning on checking it for a flight.

Most of the reviews have been positive and I agree that this is a great bag for travel. The greatest selling point of this bag is the detachable daypack. Once you arrive at your destination, the main pack can be left somewhere and the daypack can be used when exploring a city. Separating the main pack and the daypack is also great when flying in Asia where passengers are allowed to carry two carry on items - a bag and a personal item. By splitting the two bags, you may be able to bypass the carry on size restrictions.A few things that I think that could be better with this bag. While the large pack's straps are thick, I find that walking around for a few hours with just 10kg of weight quickly becomes uncomfortable. While I also use compression bags, the main pack ... While I also use compression bags, the main pack and day pack could use a few more built-in compartments. Lastly, something that annoys me (it may just be my bag), but the zipper to re-attach the day pack to the main pack often gets stuck when trying to attach the two bags, and I often need to spend a few minutes trying to get the zipper to work.Something that would be great is if the main pack had an additional zipper to compress the size of the bag. Even when I pack the bag to half capacity and use the straps to tie down the daypack and the main pack, the bag looks really bulk. Another thing that would be useful is to be able to attach a shoulder strap to the main pack to carry it as a duffel. From my experience, this would be useful at airports.

I have been using the Farpoint 55 in the small size for traveling around South America. It has been great. Holds everything I need as well as my work computer which is easy to carry in smaller detachable backpack. I like how the smaller backpack also easily attaches to the straps of the larger portion for easy carrying when I want my valuables in front of me. I have had no issues with carrying the whole backpack onboard airlines as my carryon, even on smaller foreign domestic flights.
I think this pack is the ideal travel backpacking pack. You get a large main pack, with lots of storage space and an easy to access front zip (like a traditional piece of luggage). The main pack also has strap covers so no conveyor belt rips them off, outside strapping for gear, and internal compression straps to keep everything tidy and compact. The day pack is perfectly sized for everything you need. I often had a laptop, camera and gear, water, snacks, and misc. gear in it and had plenty of room left over. The daypack also attaches to the back or front, allowing you to distribute weight and carry the pack more comfortably.I've currently done over 9mo+ of travel with this pack and plan to do years more.
I bought four of these backpacks for my family and I (including a tween and a teen) after exhaustive research. We've been trying to pare down our travel kit to be able to move light and fast where ever we were going and this pack fits the bill perfectly. We fit more than enough clothes for a trip to the PNW in December while being able to navigate through airports and train stations easily. I appreciated being able to stow the harness so nothing got caught while going through the airport luggage handling system. Being able to lock the zippers for train and bus travel was a nice perk. The detachable day pack, while quite small, held electronics, a sweater, food and a water bottle for each of us but it was a challenge to attach to the front of the main pack while ... Being able to kangaroo the daypack on the front was a big hit with my kids as they were able to access their things quickly and easily without having to take off the main pack. The main pack was ever so slightly too large for my tween but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle nor was he uncomfortable while carrying it. Their only minor complaint was that there was no zipper access from the outside of the daypack to easily reach the electronics sleeve without having to open the entire daypack. We all used packing cubes (color coded for each of us) to help organize the inside as the large panel opening made it easy to access whichever cube we were seeking, even if it was on the bottom. There is no dry bag compartment so we carried large plastic zipper bags to hold wet bathing suits. All in all, I couldn't be happier with this pack.
I liked this backpack over the 40 because of the detachable day bag. I bought it for a long trip and when it was fully packed, it was too heavy with the smaller bag attached. I ended up having to carry the small bag around separately which wasn't at all what I wanted. I had previously recommended it to my brother and sister in law and noticed that they were doing the same thing. It does fit in the overhead on larger airplanes (something 6 seats wide or more) but would be questionable on smaller ones. I have seen people in airports with the 55 and they are always carrying the smaller pack in their hands. I have never seen anyone with the day pack on their back.I ended up buying the 40 and am much happier with it. It's smaller but is 100% guaranteed to be a carry ... I wish osprey would build a space for the laptop along the back and fix the water bottle holders which are practically non-functioning.
Initially I was concerned about how I would fit 2 and a half weeks worth of clothes and kit in a hand luggage size bag but this Osprey pack was perfect, loads of room and the design and comfort were exceptional while I was away. Build quality is fantastic, I really was rwther impressed. This pack will come in very useful for further trips by air and as a regular pack for day trips etc, it really is the perfect size.
I initially bought this pack for a month long trip to Africa with overnight stops in Istanbul for a friends wedding. After an overkill of research, I went with this pack because it's size fit within enough airline carry-on sizes in length, width, and weight on its own and I was able to max it out with no trouble at the airports thus far in the US, South Africa, or Turkey. I use the smaller pack as carryon personal item and the larger gets stowed away in the upper cabinets. Knowing I'd be staying in multiple locations throughout the trip, but also needing to bring along formal heels, multiple dresses for wedding events but also gear for exploring and other normal things I'd need for the trip, I wanted a pack that can give me the space of a black hole without ... Knowing I'd be staying in multiple locations throughout the trip, but also needing to bring along formal heels, multiple dresses for wedding events but also gear for exploring and other normal things I'd need for the trip, I wanted a pack that can give me the space of a black hole without structured poles or bars holding me back from (always) overpacking- but assist me in keeping things orderly and accessible. This pack was amazing at achieving this! I hate packs with tons of straps hanging all over the place and this was as minimal as I could get while still including an adjustable hip belt. The hip belt adjusted super nicely and that was also important because my husband carried it sometimes and he's 6'5.5 and I'm 5'4 and we were both really impressed with how we could carry it with ease. The daypack is something I use close to every single day at this point. It's the perfect size for everyday use and is also very comfortable to carry. It's more substantial then some "breakaway day packs" other brands offer and there is ample space to stay organized within the multi pockets inside. Would buy this pack over and over again.
I don't usually write comments/reviews, but I couldn't not tell the world how I LOVE my Fairpoint 55. I bought it more than 2 years ago when I've decided to embrace uncertainty and see where the wind would take me - and for how long. Over the past 2.5 years, I have backpacked through SE Asia, traveled to work conferences in Europe, weddings in Germany and South Africa (meaning: fancy clothes packed), conducted field work in Africa, and lived in urban centers like Sao Paulo. And this backpack has been the best packing companion in all of these situations. It's light, it's the size of a carry on, it's resistant. It's just perfect! The only challenge is to keep the weight down so to have it as a carry on, because if you organize your things well, it can fit quite a lot (17 kilos was my personal record - not that someone that likes to travel light would be proud of it, but still impressive). To be fair, and not all loving about it, I do think that the daily pack could use some improvement. I had an issue with the connecting zipper and had the daily pack exchanged by Osprey; they gave me an earlier version of it and I really missed the cushioned computer pocket (I guess they wanted to make it lighter... but it doesn't really help if instead you need a thicker computer case) and the key chain link in the front pocket. Also, the inside pocket is kind of useless as it "blocks" you from getting the things at the bottom.Anyway, if in doubt, go for it! It is indeed one of, if not THE, best backpacks out there.
