I have used a double taper and a weight forward (WF), because of the slower casting stroke needed, I prefer the WF as I can get the fly or indicator rig out there a little further than with a double taper line. I use a knotless tapered leader to cast dry flies and a lighter indicator rig. I use most any of my tungsten nymphs with the New Zealand indicator kit and have had good success. In both ESN and tradition fly line fishing this rod is very accurate. Wherever I want my fly this rod makes it happen without much effort on my end.Cons: No hook keeper, this is a huge mistake and is just an inconvenience to me as an angler. Swing weight, it does feel a bit heavy in the hand when casting a traditional line. It has become less of a factor after I balanced it out and slowed the casting stroke. I don’t experience any fatigue after a 9-hour fishing day and then heading out to do it again the next day.Summary: I am very happy I purchased this rod and I think it is worth a look if you are thinking about it. It is my go-to rod for all my trout fishing now.

After a great deal of comparison, research and review I purchased a new 9' 5 Wt Recon for an early spring rainbow trout trip to Ontario. A pleasure to use. Handled the large early season rainbows with ease, casts like a dream - Love this new rod! So glad that I made the purchase. The Orvis team at our local store answered all my questions, provided some great insight and had a new rod shipped in prior to my trip as they only had a display on hand. Orvis - keep up the great work!

I now have four of these rods that I use when guiding. Both freshwater and saltwater versions. I LOVE THESE RODS! For the money, you get an incredible rod. The thing I love most about these rods is how accurate they are. The freshwater versions are accurate and powerful with still enough play to be able to protect your Tippit. I use the freshwater versions to guide for rainbow trout, arctic grayling, arctic char, Dolly Varden, and lake trout. I use the saltwater versions to guide for salmon, Pike, and steelhead. The salt water versions fling line out very well. Accurate and powerful. That seems to be the theme with these rods. If you are looking to upgrade your rod, I would highly recommend upgrading it to a recon. I bought the Orvis Recon 9' 6wt strictly for throwing streamers on our local river. I was new to the streamer game but would consider myself an advanced intermediate fly fisher overall, with sound casting fundamentals taught to me at an early age. With that said, this rod is exactly what I was looking for. I took it out last weekend and was amazed at how well it casted. I had looked at the Helios as I am a fan of the fastest actions, but didn't want to spend that kind of money, I was wondering if i would have wish I had bought the Helios? The answer is NO. The Recon performed incredibly well, placing the big flys exactly where I was aiming, and at a distance! It took a few months to get my rod back, therefore missing most of the striper season in Maine. I went out today in calm conditions hoping to get some fall stripers before they head south. I do love the way the rod casts. I caught one small schoolie and had no problem landing and releasing the fish. And what will I get when I get send it off and get it back? A rod that I no longer trust. How many $65 fee's will I have to pay to keep this rod in service from basic use? You fisherman know that a big part of fishing is trusting your equipment, i.e. your waders don't leak, your knots don't break, your reel has a smooth drag. Etc. Spending big bucks for a premium rod, I expect better. I'm particularly disappointed because almost all my other gear is Orvis and I'm a big fan of their quality. This rod however....not so much. Contrary to the descriptive text in the catalog and online, this is not a tough rod. It is not even an average rod.

This rod will be my primary smallmouth and large trout stream rod. I have great confidence that I can cast or fish anything I will need with this rod. My other rods are clearly faster actions. However, this may help in other ways when I'm focused on trout or smallies with light flies, poppers, and light streamers where delicate presentations should be almost automatic with the Recon.

I have had the reel seat epoxy fail and the cork handle has now become just the least bit loose. I was able to repair the reel seat, but shouldn't have to deal with issues like this when paying this much for a rod. I spend a few month each winter/spring on Abaco in the Bahamas. I wade fish for bonefish on the flats but also travel to Andros and spend time fishing with top guides from a flats boat. I have owned 3 eight wt. 9' non Orvis name brand fly rods. I decided to try the "Orvis Recon 2" in a nine wt. to add a little extra power to my casting on windy days. I was blown away at the way this rod performed. I now use it as my go to bonefish rod in most conditions, it adds about 20 feet of range with accuracy. It also allows me to pick up 50 feet of line, make one back cast and accurately throw 60 to 80 feet of line on the forecast. This past summer I went to Mexico for juvenile tarpon. This rod was amazing.
I purchased this rod sole for contact nymphing and have been very happy. The first fish I hooked with it was bigger than average. I felt the take with the sensitive tip and had no issue fighting the her despite it being a 3wt. This rod has it all. Sensitivity, backbone when needed, good looks with that matte blank and sexy reel seat insert and best of all it’s lightweight for all day adventures. I’ve also lined it with 4 & 5 Wt WF and it casts well although it wouldn’t be my choice for dry fly fishing. This is a great rod for what it was designed to do - put you in contact with fish eating nymphs. Tight lines!
