The micro-Spey has its own action for swinging and mending smaller trout streamers and wets. The two shortest trout rods have a slower action designed for short casts as compared to more conventional models. The basic saltwater models have a faster action designed for bigger flies, bigger fish, and windy conditions. The new Clearwaters improved the rod blank materials using a blend of standard, intermediate, and high modulus graphite depending on the rod model. The rods have between 10 and 15% improved strength, depending on the exact rod model. The Clearwater 763-4 is an exceptional small stream rod that provides the delicacy and precision of a higher priced premium rod. When high mountain streams or spring creeks call, the medium action Clearwater 763-4 answers with all the performance, casting pleasure, and feel you would expect from an Orvis designed rod.The new Clearwater Rod Series is not just a cosmetic face-lift, but a complete overhaul from the ground up by our Vermont rod designers. Everything has changed except the value. It's still the best fly rod you can buy for the money, but with a significant upgrade in performance and looks in a comprehensive series that covers every angler from small stream addicts to Skagit slinging two-handers. Each rod was designed with a purpose-built profile and action to handle the kind of fishing the rod model would be traditionally used for, from medium-action small stream rods to medium-fast freshwater rods and fast-action big game rods.

Firstly my Orvis Helios 3d in 5Wt is my pride and joy and is my main fly rod - However here in the UK during the winter months the weather can make fishing with a 5 weight a pain in the rear end. When its 25mph winds you need a heavier rod to make the day more enjoyable - As I use my 5wt 75 percent of the time I wanted to pickup a second setup for the other sessions when its very windy and horrible.A ten foot seven weight is the most popular setup here in the UK as it covers Big Waters such as reseviours as well as the small still waters - being ten foot means fishing teams of flies is also easier. How does this rod perform? But if you get a reasonably heavy reel for this rod then problem solved...Love my clearwater though guys and I always come abck to orvis gear even after trying the competition....Anyhow I have left a few review isn't it time I won that sweepstake voucher? Like most of the negative reviews I have broken 5 Clearwater rods (7'5'' 4W, 9' 5W, 10' 3W X2) in about 18 months. The rod tips are of poor quality and I even had a 5-weight break while casting just above the cork - a tell tale sign of poor graphite. I've been a long time supporter of all-things Orvis and when you include in-store purchases I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on their products. Within this same 2 year period I have gone through TWO pairs of Clearwater Waders and the sole of my Clearwater Boots popped right off in the middle of the stream. Virtually everything outdoorsy has been sold out everywhere since COVID and I didn't even bother trying to replace rods/waders/boots after I broke the last one and was told that just the tip section of one of the rods was "delayed several months" and that the best option would be to just order a new rod that could be overnighted. I've moved on to Patagonia waders and I really don't see myself ever buying a rod or boots from Orvis again. Maybe this is isolated to the Clearwater line of products, but as others mentioned I would look to other brands - especially when looking at rods that wont break the bank. Buying any "entry-level" fly-fishing gear certainly comes with some quality risks, but to see a personal investment in my beloved hobbies turn out to be a complete waste of time and money is the most disappointing part.

I bought this 8wt 6 piece travel rod to take fishing in Iceland. First time I used it, literally the first fish I caught, the tip broke where it joins the second piece. Luckily, I was able to hand line the fish in, but was without a rod for the rest of the day. In rural Iceland. I have had other Orvis products over the years and they have held up quite a bit longer than one fish. I have to echo other's sentiments in some of these reviews and not recommend this rod to anyone. It is unfortunate that they continue to sell this defective equipment, as it is really giving Orvis a bad reputation. After the warranty fee, I have a very expensive paperweight on my hands now, used once, with no expectations to take it anywhere else in the world due to reliability.

I recently purchased a clearwater 10ft 2 weight to add to the 10ft 3weight i have been using for past 2 years tight line nymphing,Firstly the rod just like the 3 weight is a great tool for grayling and trout nymphing, soft tip protecting the finest tippet, yet powerful enough in the bottom sections to deal with larger fish.i would recommend this rod, but and there is a BIG BUT, the first rod arrived and the first ring on the but section was several degrees out of line with the reel seat, i contacted Sean at customer services and let him know right away, the Orvis service was has always 100% and a replacement rod was shipped right away, great stuff and thank you Orvis. The replacement rod arrived a few days latter only for the tip eye to be dead flat, no angle ... MoreI recently purchased a clearwater 10ft 2 weight to add to the 10ft 3weight i have been using for past 2 years tight line nymphing,Firstly the rod just like the 3 weight is a great tool for grayling and trout nymphing, soft tip protecting the finest tippet, yet powerful enough in the bottom sections to deal with larger fish.i would recommend this rod, but and there is a BIG BUT, the first rod arrived and the first ring on the but section was several degrees out of line with the reel seat, i contacted Sean at customer services and let him know right away, the Orvis service was has always 100% and a replacement rod was shipped right away, great stuff and thank you Orvis. The replacement rod arrived a few days latter only for the tip eye to be dead flat, no angle on it what so ever, not one degree of angle. Now i am too embarrassed to call again and feel like i am moaning unduly, so gently put the tip ring in the fly tying vice and created a slight angle, all good, but i really should not have to do this. My main question to Orvis is where, where is the quality control ? such a good company, 101% great service, 100% good products and very sub standard quality control,I write this only has constructive criticism and hope it dosnt fall on death ears.I will always stick with Orvis because its great gear and gets the job done and the after sales is simple the best in the industry. So do i recommend this product ? yes of coarse, its a great bit of kit and any problems you might encounter will get sorted without any doubt.
FF'ing 35 yrs now and guiding since 1995. My old CW 904 was broken with a client last summer ( July/22), sent it in for repair (Oct.22), had it replaced and back (Nov/22). It's warm out today and I hadn't cast the rod yet. It's a TOTAL GUN !I need a rod for a specific purpose (Pike,Trout, Bonefish, small streams, lakes, mountains and my home water - The Bow River) and cast them until I find the right one. I have almost a dozen Orvis rods now. This rod is wayyy beyond what I expected but right in line with the rest of the rods I have - perfect !The 25 year warranty has served me well but the rods better. I always get the same out of Orvis products - quality and customer service ! Keep it up Orvis.
I ended up breaking 1 of my rods, and needed to replace it asap. I had a fishing trip planned for the next day. So I needed a decent rod but also didn't have any money saved for a new 1. (Typically buy recon or helios) I decided to get the 9' 5wt to replace the 5wt I just broke. In all honesty this is a great rod! Super easy casting . Looks great. Feels nice in the hand. And I feel it cast very accurate.I use this pretty much strictly for my dry fly rod, and couldn't be happier with my purchase. Will definitely be picking up a couple more of them soon. I'm trying to get my wife and son into fly fishing, and this is a great rod for the beginner all the way to an experienced Fisher.I feel that anyone looking to get a great quality rod, ya can't go wrong getting ... MoreI ended up breaking 1 of my rods, and needed to replace it asap. Bought my first Orvis product (a Battenkill non-disc reel, size I) a few years ago, and paired it with my 6' 2wt non-Orvis rod. Liked it so much that I've since bought the Disc versions in sizes I, II, and III. And ultimately my zeal for those well-made, great-looking little reels fueled my desire to acquire a few Orvis rods. Fast-forward to this past week, where I purchased a Clearwater 3wt rod and enjoyed fishing it so much in the foothills of MT's Beartooth Mtns that the very next day I purchased Clearwater rods in 4wt and 6wt to go with my Disc II and III reels, and then took all three combos to fish the Bighorn River (I live near these world class fisheries). BIG Orvis fan so far!
Ive used the clearwater series for about 10 years steelhead fishing. The older green model was much better. The new grey version 2-3 years ago is cheap and durability is horrible. THE GOOD: Rod is light and looks nice. THE BAD: Durability is horrible. The rod pieces break in half very easily. I had 4 break in two years. I sent 3 in for $70 repair exchanges (which should have been free in my opinion). 4th time just broke and I'm not even going to send it in. I'm going with a different brand. 3 out of 4 breaks were under completely normal use...casting and fish. one time stepped on lightly and still broke (maybe my fault). I understand it's not the pro series but at $250 it is not nearly worth the price. Cheap and not durable.
I have owned a Clearwater 3-wt 10-ft rod for just over a year. It gets heavy use once a week or so. The rod is used exclusively for Euronymphing. The rod is nice enough for a low end low price offering. After 10 months I noticed the reel seat ring did not hold. It has to be tightened every few minutes or the reel will drop off. My fishing buddy with the same rod also has the exact same problem. I contacted Orvis to suggest there was a design flaw or manufacturing defect, but was told that Orvis does extensive product field testing and they look for this kind of issue during their product tests. I don’t believe they have sufficiently tested the ring. Must start this review by saying I do own H3D and H3F rods. I bought this as I wanted to see how it stackes up to these very expensive models. First the build is very good. The reel seat is just fine and the cork is much better quality then I expected. To me it feels very much like a H3D in hand. After I used it for a bit, I felt surprised at how good it casts. As good as the H3D & F models ? No, but very close. After all, casting is way more about ability than rod. A good caster can make a bad rod perform fine. Most of the time. At the end of the day, this rod is 8 out of 10. If you shut your eyes and compared the feel, you would be hard pressed to know the difference. If you no how to use the rod and not your body, and this is what takes time and practice, you ... MoreMust start this review by saying I do own H3D and H3F rods. And your spouse will not ask you to see a shrink because you spent a house payment on a pole to fish with. And you can make a car payment with the money you saved. Or maybe a new laptop, tires, stove etc. After all, your fishing right ?
