That said, it means there's no nearby air vent which coupled with the lack of heat sink might cause your NVMe blade to run hot. Check temperatures carefully and consider removing the backplane for the in-use slot anyway, to aid ventilation. The Intel P660 seems OK but I'm still cautious and may upgrade to a card with integrated heat sink in the near future. As a quick solution to get going and clone my old NVMe drive to the new one, though, it couldn't really be beaten for the price. If you want drives hanging off this card to be bootable, then the EFI version ("Boot ROM version" in System Information) will need to be at 140.0.0.0.0 or later (144 being the most recent for the 5,1 hardware). Pre-2013 Mac Pro units don't get automated EFI updates when installing combo updates or delta patches of macOS annoyingly - you'll need to download a full 10.14.6 installer if you have an old Boot ROM, run it and follow the instructions for the EFI update; after that, you can close down and delete the installer. DosDude1's Mojave patcher can download this for you if you can't find it from Apple.Mac users should note that PCI card-installed NVMe drives are seen as *external* so there is no way to install Windows via BootCamp, notwithstanding how difficult that became under Mojave anyway. BootCamp can still be persuaded to work with a lot of effort, but you definitely won't be able to do it on any partitioned drive or on any NVMe drive installed to a PCI card. The only option I know of in the pre-2013 Mac Pro towers is to use one of the internal SATA connectors and a dedicated, but obviously slower 2.5" SATA SSD for the Windows installation.

Doesn't work with Samsung 970 Pro 1TB. Drive pops up in disk manager, but you can not initialize the drive. Not working.Secondly I asked the sales assistance if there was enough clearance for a third party heat sink. It is uncomfortably close screwing the drive down, so much so, I think it is putting too much pressure on the connector as the heat sink is pushing into the PCI Card.

Can confirm this does not work with Samsung 980 M.2 NVME 1TBProduct label is for M.2 NVME PCIe SSDwill only work with M.2 NVME NGFF SSD for e.g. Samsung 960 or older(might be the same story for all Orico adapters)found this out the hard way...Disk management was giving me "a device which does not exist was specified." whenever I tried to initialize diskafter spending hours looking through online guides with no success I read a PB tech review of the X4 version "Awesome upgrade - BUT - Requires an NGFF disk"after looking up what a NGFF SSD is I came to the conclusion that I'm going to need the StarTech card to work with the latest M.2 SSD

Tested in two different PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots with two different M.2 drives. Didn't work. Submitted return claim which was ignored. Ended up buying a cheaper one from eBay which actually worked.

Bought this as ran out of SATA ports and needed more memory for all my games.Gets 1500mb read speeds with write not too far behind. (My m.2 stick maxes at 1600 read) Runs faster than my SATA SSD.Very happy with the adapter and great price over the others.

Purchased this because I wanted to absolutely delete the space required to vertically mount my GPU. Worked flawlessly and as a bonus it also gives you an M-key M.2 slot for whatever reason.TLDR: Does what it says, 10/10 would recommend.
