I've had a chance to use this for a couple of months now, and it has been a surprisingly good addition to my lens bag. I'm an old timer, and for most of my career ISO 400 film was about as fast as you could go without baseball sized grain, but in digital, you can easily pick up an extra two stops without any significant decrease in image quality, which is my way of saying the fact that it is not an f/2.8 or faster is not a bother. The 8-25 range covers about 80% of all the shots I do in train photography, and I have other, more specialized fast lenses for when that's needed.Construction materials and assembly seem both first rate, so if this is like later M. Zuiko lenses might be, I'll have to think about retiring some old friends.

This lens is the perfect range of focal lengths for a walk around lens. Wide angle to get great panoramas, up to 50mm equivalent for regular photography. I used to carry the 7-14 and 12-100, but I found I was constantly changing lenses to either get a wider perspective, or more reach. Now, I use the 8-25 for a great percentage of my images. The lens is exceptionally sharp, and the close focusing ability gives it a near macro perspective. I still think the 12-100 is unbeatable as an all around lens, but this one comes a close second. The 'unlock to use' setup gets a bit of getting used to, but it is no different than the 12-32mm Lumix I had in the past. Excellent for travel if you like ultra-wide. Gives you the convenience of standard (50mm FOV) at the long end. Can focus crazy close to the front element for unique perspectives. Love it for landscapes too - rugged and splashproof/freezeproof.

The question for me is whether this lens, with its greater size and weight, would be a satisfactory alternative for my trusty Olympus 9-18mm version ii. My purchase arrived from BH yesterday. This morning I had the opportunity to address the question. Attaching my new lens to an Olympus E-M5 (first gen) body, I went out on a long walk through a local farmers market. The greater weight of the lens did not become to be an issue. And the results, happily, are there. After spending the day, I do not expect this purchase will be returned to BH. Sample snaps attached.
When this lens was first released I wasn't sure what the use case for it would be, until I went through graduation season this year. My normal walk around lens has been the 12-200mm, which is great most of the time. However, this graduation season made me realize that 12mm isn't quite wide enough for many situations (such as smaller home indoors or capturing groups in a pavilion easily). In order to capture all these situations I would have to carry both my 12-200mm and my 7-14mm Pro.The new 8-25mm Pro fits the sweet spot for small gatherings, giving you wide enough to capture groups or individuals in small spaces, and long enough to capture nice portraits.
This was one of my two favorite lenses on an extensive month long trip to Asia. It was great having a single small lens that covers 16-50mm focal length equivalent. With my 17mm 1.2 Pro for low light and shallow depth of field I covered 90-95% of my situations. I also brought the Olympus Pro 40-150/2.8 with TC and PL 42.5/1.2. Both superb lenses but I found they got little use.You do have to get used to unlocking the lens before use but this because second nature and worth the trade off for smaller and lighter. There are some superb MFT lenses but this is one of the best. Very sharp even wide open.
I like this lens and want to like it at 5 stars. My only reservation to date involves construction - this one does not feel as tight as my other PRO telephotos (12-40 F2.8 and 12-100 F4.0). The first day I took it out I heard a noticeable clunk when I routinely moved the camera into shooting position (nothing quick or violent about my movement). I quickly surmised that the noise was made by movement of the barrel inside the housing. This happened whether the lens was locked or in shooting position. I checked it against my other PRO telephoto lenses and found perceptibly more movement with the 8-25 barrel.I haven't tested it in all the conditions of intended use, but a few quick shots show results pleasing to my eye. I have the lens now, the first lens I got was dead out of the box. Robert at Precision camera was great in taking care of this problem, ordered a new lens from a sister store that had one and let me know when the lens came in. Great store, great service. Oh by the way the new lens is great too. Used it several times over this past wkend and the pictures were very sharp corner to corner. Thanks

Yes it does take a little bit of getting used to the retracting mechanism but after less than a week walking around using it prior to my trip it became second nature. No problem and worth it for the compact size. I previously had used the PL8-18 for an ultra-wide zoom but always felt I needed to carry an additional zoom to cover longer shots. On this trip I paired the Oly 8-25mm for landscape and walk around lens with the 40-150 f2.8 for puffins, whale watching and the like. When this lens first came out, I didn't think that the wide to normal range was very useful since I had 12-40 and 40-150 covered. But I traded away the 12-40 and now go with 8-25 and 40-150 and that works fine. The gap is not very important to me and having the wide end down at 8 mm is very useful.Optically the lens is superb and has all the key features of an Oly Pro lens, i.e, manual focus clutch, Lfn button and is fully weather sealed.
